Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of high temperature on the functional groups, microstructure and physical characteristics of cordierite ceramics obtained from an aqueous solution of magnesium nitrate hydrate ((Mg(NO3)2.6.12H2O)), aluminium nitrate hydrate (Al(NO3)2.9.15H2O) and silica sols extracted from rice husk. The samples were sintered at temperature of 1000â—¦C, 1200â—¦C and 1400â—¦C. Functional groups and microstructural characteristics of cordierite ceramics were examined by FTIR and SEM, respectivelly. FTIR study shows that the absence of the vibration bands of Na-OH, Si-OH, C-O, Si-O-Si on the samples. However, the formation of cordierite structure was dominated on this high temperature. Microstructure results confirmed the presence of irregular morphology of the solid and compact phases. In addition, the densities, shrinkage andhardness of cordierite increase significantly with increasing temperature, but porosity decreases with increasingtemperature.

Abstract

MODELING INFILTRATION KINETICS OF LIQUIDS INTO POROUS ALUMINA PREFORMS. Alpha-alumina preform was infiltrated with different infiltrant and pressure for studying the infiltration kinetic. Effects of pre-sintering temperature, type of infiltrant, pressure and multiple infiltrations on the rate of infiltration into porous alumina preforms were described. The pore radius of alumina preform is calculated based on the preform water system by using Washburn model. The pore radius from this model, r of 0.0147 μm is good agreement to the average pore radius found by using mercury porosity measurement, r of 0.0170 μm. The pore radius of 0.0147 μm is used to calculate the rate of infiltration, k. The k factors are 64.83 x 10-5 ms½ and 27.11 x 10-5 ms½ for water and TiCl3 respectively without involving pressure in the calculation. On the other hand, by using pressure, the k factors are 75.14 x 10-5 ms½ and 31.40 x 10-5 ms½ for water and TiCl3 respectively. Other formulas were also included as comparisons. The kinetic of water and titanium trichloride alumina preform system is parabolic in time or linier in square root of time.

Abstract

Ilmenite is a natural material in the form of sand which contains heavy metal minerals that are very abundant in Lampung province. This research aims to determine the content of TiO2 from Lampungs iron sand by leaching method with temperature variation. The iron sand are mixed with sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3), then heated at 700◦C for an hour. This research uses 5 samples with leaching temperature variation of 70, 80, 90, 100, and 110◦C for 2 hours. The acid leaching process uses HCl 12 M with a ratio of iron sand and HCl of 1:4, while the water leaching process uses 50 ml of distilled water. Furthermore, the samples are characterized using XRD and XRF to determine TiO2 content in the iron sand. The result shows that the highest amount of TiO2 is obtained in the sample with the leaching temperature of 110◦C for 2 hours, which is approximately 61%.

Abstract

Preparation and characterization of tin dioxide, SnO2, had been carried out by precipitation process of SnCl2.2H2O in ammonia and aqua solutions with comparison of 1 : 7. FeCl3 was added to solution with variation of 0, 0,1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 gram respectively and then sintered at 900°C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the intensity of diffraction increases with the addition of Fe. The addition of Fe does not cause the new phase. Generally, the Bragg angle is relative same for all samples that means Fe does not change significantly the cell parameters. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image shows the microstructure changed with the addition of Fe. On the small addition, the microstructure tends to oval and on the larger addition to plateau.

Abstract

Research on the formation of TiO2 nanofiber has been carried out with PVP variations of 1.1; 1,2; 1.3; 1.4 and 1.5 grams using electrospinning. This study aims to determine the effect of PVP variation on the viscosity and morphology of TiO2 nanofibers and to determine the crystal structure of the fibers. Synthesis of TiO2 was carried out using the sol-gel method. TTIP is used as a precursor, ethanol as a solvent, acetic acid as a catalyst and PVP as a fiber-forming polymer. The results of the viscosity measurement show that the amount of PVP used in the sample is directly proportional to the level of solution viscosity. Based on the results of SEM characterization, it showed relatively uniform nanofiber morphology with fiber diameter ranging from 94 nm - 735 µm. The results of TEM characterization showed that the size of TiO2 nanofiber particles ranged from 7-15 nm. The results of XRD analysis showed that the crystal structures formed at a calcination temperature of 450 oC were the anatase and rutile phases.

Abstract

Sintesis titania doping sulfur (S-TiO2) dilakukan melalui metode sol-gel.
