Abstract

This study aims to analyze the critical thinking skill profiles of eighth-grade students at SMP 2 Surabaya based on Ennis’s critical thinking indicators. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving 33 students. The research instrument consisted of a critical thinking skills test comprising 15 multiple-choice items developed based on five indicators: elementary clarification, basic support, inference, advanced clarification, and strategy and tactic. Data analysis was conducted descriptively using mean scores and standard deviations to describe the students’ critical thinking skills achievement. The results of the study indicate that students’ critical thinking skills fall into the moderate-to-low category, with indicator achievement percentages ranging from 45.33% to 50.67%. The elementary clarification and basic support indicators achieved the highest percentage at 50.67%, while the inference and advanced clarification indicators showed the lowest achievement at 45.33%. Analysis by gender indicated that the average scores of male (M = 7,50) students were slightly higher than those of female students (M = 7,16), though this did not show a statistically significant difference. These findings indicate that students are relatively more capable of understanding and explaining information compared to engaging in deep inferential reasoning and evaluating assumptions. This study can serve as a foundation for developing instruction that systematically trains analytical skills, evidence-based argumentation, and reflection to enhance critical thinking skills in a sustainable manner

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the problem-solving profile of seventh-grade junior high school students in Surabaya based on the PISA 2012 indicators. This study used a survey method with a quantitative descriptive approach. The research subjects were 31 seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 63 Surabaya in the 2025/2026 academic year. The research instrument consisted of 12 questions adapted from PISA questions and arranged based on four problem-solving indicators. The instrument has been validated and has a Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.760. The results showed that 26% of students were in the low category, 55% in the medium category, and 19% in the high category with an average achievement of 53%. The highest indicator was at the stage of integrating and reflecting on results (60%), while the lowest indicator was at the stage of planning and implementing strategies (37%). These findings indicate that students' main weakness lies in developing problem-solving strategies. This study provides an impression of the need for problem-based learning and non-routine contextual practice questions to improve students' problem-solving skills.

Abstract

Misconceptions in dynamic electricity remain a common issue in physics learning due to the abstract and interrelated nature of its concepts. This study aimed to map the misconception profile of ninth-grade students on dynamic electricity using a three-tier diagnostic test based on the Guttman scale. The research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive-correlational diagnostic design. The sample consisted of 49 ninth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument included 15 items of a three-tier diagnostic test covering five sub-concepts: electric current, voltage, electric circuits, resistance, and Ohm’s law. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics to determine the percentage of students’ response categories and Spearman’s rho correlation analysis to identify relationships among sub-concepts. The results showed that the highest level of misconception occurred in the voltage sub-concept (41%), followed by electric circuits (31.3%), resistance (22.9%), and Ohm’s law (22.2%), while the electric current sub-concept showed the lowest level of misconception (13.2%). Correlation analysis indicated significant positive relationships among several sub-concepts, particularly between voltage and electric circuits as well as resistance. These findings indicate that misconceptions in dynamic electricity are systemic and interrelated across sub-concepts. The use of a Guttman-scale-based three-tier diagnostic test proved effective in identifying misconceptions more accurately. Therefore, the results of this study can serve as an empirical basis for designing instructional strategies aimed at reconstructing students’ conceptual understanding.

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of low cognitive ability among Indonesian students, particularly in the context of deep learning implementation in junior high schools. The research aims to analyze the cognitive abilities of students in Surabaya public junior high schools based on three main indicators: understanding, applying, and reflecting. This study employs a quantitative approach using a cross-sectional survey design involving 68 students from grades 7, 8, and 9. Data were collected through a 12-item multiple-choice test developed according to deep learning cognitive indicators and analyzed using descriptive statistics with JASP software. The results indicate that the applying indicator achieved the highest mean score (43.75), followed by understanding (40.44), while reflecting showed the lowest mean (30.88). These findings suggest that students are relatively better at applying knowledge than understanding concepts deeply or engaging in reflective thinking. Furthermore, variations across grade levels show different cognitive patterns, with grade 9 students demonstrating improved understanding compared to lower grades. Gender-based analysis reveals no significant difference in central tendency, although female students show greater variability in performance. Overall, the study highlights the need to strengthen reflective thinking skills to achieve a more balanced cognitive development aligned with deep learning principles.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the scientific literacy profile of junior high school students in Sidoarjo based on PISA 2025 indicators. Scientific literacy is an essential competency for understanding and applying science in daily life, yet students’ literacy levels in Indonesia remain low. This research used a quantitative descriptive survey design. The instrument was adapted from the PISA 2025 framework, consisting of 9 multiple-choice questions covering three indicators: explaining phenomena scientifically, evaluating and designing scientific inquiry, and interpreting data for decision-making. The sample involved 30 seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Krian, Sidoarjo. Data were analyzed using percentage calculations and categorized into criteria levels. The results showed that overall scientific literacy was in the low category (50%). The highest score was on explaining scientific phenomena (69%, high), while the lowest was on using scientific information for decision-making (39%, very low). These findings indicate the need for innovative, contextual, and student-centered learning strategies.
