Abstract

Listening comprehension in Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) has its own challenges, both in terms of listening and the comprehension process. This article explores aspects of prosody in short dialogues used in listening comprehension tests: duration, pitch, and intensities. The method applied in this research was descriptive qualitative with phonetic approach based on Collins and Mess’s Practical Phonetics and Phonology. A recording from ETS official website, consisting of thirty short dialogs were analyzed to perform the durations and pitch variations with the assistance of voice analyzer, Praat, especially for imaging process of pitch contour and measuring duration. Phonetic transcription showed the assimilation and elision processes occurred as the result of connected speech, while pitch variations tended to show more on attitudinal function, grammatical function, and fewer emphases on significant information. The voice actors performed the speech of General American accents naturally; however the nature of conversation itself would not be realized since this section is designed purposively to examine test-takers ability on semantic and pragmatic area. The duration of the speech is displayed as naturally as possible in the context of everyday conversation so that the perception of listeners who are not native speakers assesses it as rapid speech.

Abstract

Political parties are a forum for Indonesian people from various ideological backgrounds as channels for the aspirations of a pluralistic society. The party's ideology is embodied in the vision and mission that the party aspires to when domination is obtained after the General Election is held. In this research, the anthem lyrics of the top three political parties, based on the 2019 legislative elections, were taken as the data and studied through a stylistic approach at the lexicogrammatical level to figure out the ideology in the realization of the vision and mission of the political parties. The method of the analysis applied descriptive qualitative through transitivity analysis in order to reveal the lexical and grammatical construction in the lyric. The typical processes used in each anthem characterized the cognitive frame of how the political parties set their vision and orientation towards the nation goals. It was found that the use of stylistic devices came in low frequency, including epizeuxis, parallelism, imagery, metaphor, symbolism, asyndeton and anaphora. The construction of clauses in the anthem lyrics has a significant impact in expressing the goals of political parties ideologically, so that the results of this study are expected to be an alternative reference that provides a paradigm for the voting community during the election period

Abstract

Bangka Island has several kinds of tourist attractions, such as natural tourism, historical tourism, cultural tourism and artificial tourism. The names of tourist attractions on Bangka Island still follow the names of the areas where the tourist attractions are located. Unfortunately, many local residents do not acknowledge the origins and meanings of the names of these tourist attractions. There is a need for an in-depth study regarding the naming of tourist attractions on Bangka Island to increase public awareness and the body of knowledge that needs to be preserved to increase tourism potential on Bangka Island. Research on the toponymy of tourist attractions on the island of Bangka uses ethnosemantic methods, and the results are described qualitatively. Ten tourist attractions were selected by random sampling based on the availability of information in the community. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the names of tourist attractions on Bangka Island consist of three aspects, namely the linguistic aspect, both generic and specific, and the historical aspect of the formation and dynamics of society in the area.

This study applies descriptive qualitative research method using a content analysis approach. This study employs certain characteristics of Propp’s narrative model and applied them in the folklore which aim at finding the morphological reading of the narrative functions. The data were gathered and identified according to the forms of narrative functions. All the categorized contents were analyzed based on the narrative functions and symbols. Based on the analysis, there are 11 functions found in the story. There were the function of Absentation (β1), Delivery (ζ), Reconnaissance (ε), Trickery (η3), Complicity (θ1), Villainy (A14), Meditation (B4), provision of a magical agent (F6), Guidance (G4), struggle (H), and Transfiguration (T). In short, the function is as follows: β1ζεη3θ1A14B4F6G4HT. The function of Struggle (H) and Transfiguration (T) is unusual since the villain is not the one who have combat with the hero but a new character, Pahit Lidah. He defeats the hero by transforming him into a stone.

Abstract

This study examines literary works in the form of films via a sociological approach. The purpose of this study is to describe the major characters’ characterizations and define the different kinds of social interactions in Peter Sohn’s 2023 film Elemental: Forces of Nature. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study described sources and information as research objects, such as dialogue or transcripts and movie stills. This study made use of Tischler's social interaction theory (Nonverbal Behavioral Interaction, Exchange Interaction, Cooperative Interaction, Conflict Interaction, and Competitive Interaction) as well as Petrie and Boggs' characterization theory (Appearance, Dialogue, External Actions, Reactions from Other Characters). 32 social interaction data points were gathered for this study, which showed how social interactions influenced the main character's description based on her words, actions, and behaviors. First, two data were reflected in characterization through appearance, four data were reflected in characterization through external activities, and three data were reflected in characterization through other characters' reactions in social interactions that took the form of nonverbal behavioral exchange. In addition, social contacts in the form of exchange encounters revealed that two data were represented in characterization through other characters' reactions, four data were reflected in characterization of external activities, and five data were reflected in characterization through dialogue. Subsequently, five data were represented in characterization through external actions, and one data was reflected in characterization through discussion in the form of cooperative social engagement. Lastly, social interactions in the form of conflict interaction revealed two data represented in appearance characterization, three data reflected in dialogue characterization, and one data reflected in other characters' reactions. This investigation did not find any competitive interaction. According to the study's findings, the primary character's characterization varies as a result of the social interactions in its environment.

Abstract

The study of dysphemism remains significant because it is frequently observed in daily interactions as a way to express strong emotions such as anger, frustration, or dislike, both on direct conversations, and digital platforms. This study examines the types and effects of dysphemism in YouTube comments in the video “Two Steps Ahead” by Avocado Nicokado. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, the research identifies dysphemisms based on Allan and Burridge’s (2006) framework. To collect the data, the researcher accessed the Nikocado Avocado YouTube channel and selected the video “Two Step Ahead,” which had 49 million views and 304,726 comments. The 25 comments were analyzed as data, with relevant ones captured using screenshots and notes, and the identified dysphemistic terms were cross-checked for accuracy. Based on 25 analyzed comments, 31 dysphemistic words and phrases were identified. The data revealed the following types of dysphemism: 9 are categorized as taboo terms, 4 as profane swearing and oaths, 1 as comparisons with animals, 1 as dysphemistic epithets, 7 as imprecations and epithets, 1 as -IST dysphemism, and 8 as terms of insult. Based on the data, taboo words and phrases were the most frequent, followed by insult terms and imprecations and epithets, mostly used to insult and mock Nikocado, though some expressed shock and admiration. Dysphemism can affect people's perspectives. It also provides emotional release, affecting how individuals express frustration or surprise. While generally negative, dysphemism can create closeness in informal contexts but may also deepen polarization and reinforce existing biases.

Abstract

This research examines the application of Nida’s (1964) formal equivalence theory in machine translation, with a focus on the structural and grammatical aspects of CNN headlines translated by Bing Translator and DeepL. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing translated headlines related to the 2024 United States Election. Data was collected from CNN’s official website from October to November 2024, and translations were obtained from both machine translation tools. The analysis shows that whereas both translation tools attempt to maintain structural accuracy, Bing Translator tends to preserve rigid sentence structures, while DeepL adapts phrases to improve fluency, sometimes at the expense of grammatical accuracy. A readability assessment, based on the researcher’s interpretation, shows that DeepL produces smoother translations, which are more accessible to readers. This research contributes to the machine translation reliability discussion in journalism and emphasizes the challenge of maintaining formal equivalence while ensuring readability. Future research can explore a broader corpus or integrate computational linguistic analysis to improve translation evaluation methodology. Keywords:  Formal Equivalence; Machine Translation; News Translation; Readability;  News Headlines
