Abstract

Essential fatty acids play a crucial role in fish growth and health. A quality feed containing the right amount of fats can promote fish growth and support metabolic functions. Fatty acid requirements vary depending on the fish species and habitat, with freshwater fish tending to require more n-6 fatty acids, while marine fish require more n-3 fatty acids. The use of fat in feed should be well regulated, as too high levels can interfere with the digestive and metabolic processes of the fish. The use of fish oil mixed in feed as much as 1.5% can help improve the growth performance of carp. Magot oil mixed into the feed as much as 15%/100 g gives the best growth performance in carp. Soybean oil used as much as 10% in feed can increase the content of omega 3, EPA, and DHA in catfish meat. Coconut oil used in feed at 6% proved to have a good impact on the DHA content of tilapia. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on the role and function of fatty acids in fish growth.

Abstract

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a freshwater fish with economic commodity value and an important commodity in the freshwater fish business in Indonesia. Problems often encountered in efforts to increase tilapia cultivation production are the reduction of empty land for cultivation activities and complex water sources in some areas. Land availability and water source supply are two main factors determining fisheries cultivation's success. Aquaponics is an alternative cultivation method that can save land and water use and optimize cultivation waste into plant biomass as a by-product with a selling value. The method used in this research is the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) experimental method, which consists of four treatments and three replications. The treatments used consist of (A) without mixing probiotics (negative control), (B) adding probiotics 5 ml.kg-1 feed, (C) adding probiotics 7.5 ml.kg-1 feed, and (D) adding probiotics 10 ml.kg-1 feed. The test tilapia were cultured in an aquaponic system with lettuce plants for 40 days with a density of 20 fish/80L. Feeding was carried out using the feeding rate (FR) method of 5% of biomass. The results obtained during the study showed that treatment C with a dose of 7.5 ml.kg-1 of feed produced positive conditions that were significantly different in terms of a specific growth rate of 2.30 ± 0.1%, 100% survival, and feed efficiency of 56.5 ± 1.6%, absolute length was 3.08 ± 0.07 cm and absolute weight was 13.14 ± 1.53 gram

Abstract

Color is a defining trait of ornamental fish, crucial for their aesthetic appeal, but it diminishes without pigment supplementation in their diet. Utilizing dragon fruit skin as a natural feed constituent offers a promising method to intensify fish coloration. This investigation aims to assess the impact of incorporating dragon fruit skin meal into fish feed on color vibrancy and growth performance, specifically focusing on comet fish. The test subjects, ranging from 4 to 6 cm in size and weighing 3.1 ± 0.2 grams, underwent examination. Employing a completely randomized design (CRD), the study involved four treatments replicated four times: treatment A (control), B (5% dragon fruit skin meal addition), C (10% addition), and D (15% addition). Before commencing the study, a preliminary assessment of dragon fruit skin meal was conducted, encompassing a chromameter-based color pigmentation test. Results revealed positive a (red) and b (yellow) values, a chroma value of 26.32 signifying carotenoid pigments, a hue value of 3.18° indicating a red-orange hue, and a moderate antioxidant activity was observed, indicating the presence of antioxidant compounds. Findings demonstrated that a 15% addition of dragon fruit skin meal substantially enhanced color vibrancy across the fish's body sections, including the head, body, and tail. Although fish weight and length were influenced by the feed amendment, ANOVA analysis did not ascertain significant effects. Furthermore, treatment C exhibited the most favorable feed conversion ratio and specific growth rate, recording values of 0.09 ± 0.03 and 0.934 ± 0.215, respectively. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Pangasius is a freshwater fish included in the main commodity by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia. Siamese catfish production ranked 4th in freshwater fish commodities in 2016 after goldfish, tilapia, and catfish. Pangasius has a lack of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) if compared with fish from the sea. Application of additional different levels of soybean oil in commercial fish fed to enhance EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) in Perkasa pangasiid flesh. This study was conducted to determine the effect of adding soybean oil with different levels of commercial fish feed given to Perkasa striped catfish on growth performance, feed efficiency, EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). This experimental study used a Complete Randomized Design (CDR) with triplicates and five treatments with additional levels of soybean oil in commercial fish fed: (a) 0%, (b) 2%, (c) 4%, (d) 6%, and (e) 8%. The result showed that treatment of (e) is the best treatment for increasing the EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) in Pangasius flesh. However, additional different levels of soybean oil in the commercial fish feed have no negative effect on growth performance and feed efficiency in Perkasa pangasiid.
