Abstract

Abstract

The waste problem in Dukuhwaluh Village was still a lot of household waste thrown away in any places. This household waste causes unpleasant odors, environmental pollution, various disease outbreaks, aesthetic disturbances, and flooding during the rainy season. Another problem encountered in Dukuhwaluh Village is the provision of feed for catfish farmers, the price of which is increasingly expensive. This causes the development of the catfish farming business to be very slow and even threatened with collapse. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and skills of fish farmers in Dukuh Waluh Village in cultivating maggots using media from household organic waste. This community service activity also aims to develop magot as an alternative fish food that is cheap, has high nutritional value and is environmentally friendly. The implementation of this community service uses research-based community empowerment methods. Meanwhile, the approach method used in implementing community service is active and collaborative participation. The results of community service activities can increase the knowledge and skills of the Dukuhwaluh Village fish farmer in maggot cultivation. The fish farmer group has also been able to practice magot cultivation using household organic waste properly and correctly, as well as applying the results of maggot cultivation to feed catfish.

Abstract

KWT Makmur Berkah is involved in agriculture and fisheries, utilizing land of 150 tiles (approximately 2,100 m²). In agriculture, members cultivate peanuts, chili peppers, and vegetables. In fisheries, they practice polyculture with various fish species. Currently, the fish feed used is a mix of kitchen spices and pellets. Interviews revealed that the feeding practices are suboptimal, as they focus solely on increasing fish size without addressing nutritional quality. This community service project aims to improve the knowledge and skills of KWT Makmur Berkah members in producing alternative fish feed. The project began with an overview of the importance of high-quality fish feed, followed by training in the production of alternative feed. Participants then took part in demonstrations and hands-on practice with fish feed pellet machines and learned how to maintain these machines. After the initial implementation, monitoring and evaluation were carried out, alongside periodic support to ensure the program’s ongoing success. A total of 20 KWT Makmur Berkah members participated in the project. The project’s results were significant. Participants, particularly women, not only successfully learned to operate the feed pellet machines independently but also reported high levels of satisfaction with the tool’s ease of use and efficiency. Feedback from the training was overwhelmingly positive, with many members noting that the program significantly enhanced their fish farming practices.

Abstract

Entomological surveillance is essential to evaluate the abundance and distribution of Aedes aegypti mosquito, the dengue virus’s primary vector. This study investigates the abundance and distribution of Aedes spp collected with ovitraps in Mersi and Ledug, Purwokerto Timur, Banyumas. Both localities are identified as dengue endemic areas by the Banyumas’ Health Service. Ovitrap surveillances were performed every two weeks in Mersi and Ledug, in January – March 2022. For each localitiy, 50 respondent houses were randomly selected and 5 ovitrap surveillance trips were conducted. In each trip, 100 ovitraps were distributed to 50 respondent houses. At every single house, one ovitrap was placed inside the house (indoor) and one outside the house (outdoor). All samples collected were transported to and reared at Zoology laboratory, UMP. Mosquito larvae were identified to species at instar IV and totaled. The OPI (Ovitrap positivity index) for both indoor and outdoor ranged from 38,00% - 59,70%. The mean number of larvae for Mersi outdoor (612,50±109,73) was higher than Mersi indoor (478,80±42,96) p= .031 and Ledug indoor (347,20±45,04) p= .000, but not significantly different from Ledug outdoor (507,20±51,07) p= .109. There was no significant difference for EDI (egg density index) in the four ovitrap placements, F(3,16) = 1.132, p= .366. However, the MNE (mean number of eggs) showed a significant difference for Mersi and Ledug both indoor and outdoor F(3,16) = 14.528, p= .000. Conclusion: The OPI showed that the distribution of Aedes spp in Mersi and Ledug was high. Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus were found as both outdoor and indoor breeder although Ae. aegypti was found to be the dominant both as indoor and outdoor breeder.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve partners’ knowledge and skills regarding vaccination as an effort to control diseases caused by pathogenic organisms, particularly aeromoniasis, which is induced by Aeromonas spp. The partner group consists of fish farmers in Dukuh Waluh Village, Banyumas Regency. The implementation method employed a participatory approach, consisting of four stages: socialization, training, mentoring, and evaluation. The evaluation instruments included questionnaires and interviews, analyzed using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The results of this program showed that 85% of partner members understood fish disease management, an increase from 50% (exceeding the 80% target), and 85% were able to comprehend and implement fish vaccination practices, an improvement from 42.5% (also exceeding the 80% target). The activity also proved successful in achieving a fish survival rate of 95% in the vaccinated group—surpassing the target of 80%—while the control group (unvaccinated fish) reached only 50%. Overall, the evaluation results indicate that this community service activity effectively assisted partners in addressing fish disease issues and improving aquaculture production performance.

Throughout an 80-day cultivation period, catfish fed a combination of commercial feed and maggots demonstrated an average daily weight gain of 1.5 grams and achieved a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.2. The incorporation of maggots as an alternative protein source was able to substitute up to 45% of the commercial feed without compromising growth performance.
