Abstract

Purpose: This study examines key determinants of employee performance in Indonesia’s maritime sector, focusing on ship crews. It analyzes training, work motivation, transformational leadership, and organizational culture to understand their roles in enhancing crew effectiveness, discipline, and overall productivity. Research Methodology: This study used a descriptive qualitative method with the SALSA framework to review 30 peer-reviewed articles published in the past eight years. Theoretical triangulation involved applying Human Capital Theory, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Bass’s Transformational Leadership, and Hofstede’s Organizational Culture Framework. Results: The findings reveal that training improves job competence, work quality, and accountability; motivation enhances commitment and timeliness; transformational leadership fosters trust, innovation, and responsibility; and organizational culture strengthens discipline, teamwork, and loyalty. Each variable positively influences employee performance in the maritime context. Conclusions: Investments in human resource factors particularly training, motivation, leadership, and organizational culture are crucial for enhancing the performance of maritime personnel. These factors serve as strategic levers to improve safety, operational efficiency, and service quality in the shipping industry. Limitations: The study is limited to secondary data from literature published in English and Bahasa Indonesia, lacks empirical field validation, and does not explore the interaction effects among the variables. Contribution: This study contributes conceptually by offering a synthesized framework linking human resource variables to maritime performance, thereby guiding future empirical research and managerial interventions in crew development and organizational transformation.

Abstract

Pneumonia was an infectious disease of the respiratory tissues and could be a leading cause of death in young children. Several risk factors contributed to an increased incidence of pneumonia, including the nutritional status of children, exclusive breastfeeding, immunization status, and environmental conditions both inside and outside the home. This study aimed to determine the relationship between environmental, nutritional, and socioeconomic factors with pneumonia in children under five in Surabaya. The research employed a case-control design with a population consisting of children diagnosed with pneumonia and those without pneumonia in the working area of the Surabaya Health Office, specifically at Wiyung Health Center and Gayungan Health Center. A total of 102 respondents were selected using purposive random sampling techniques. Data analysis was conducted using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate methods. The multivariate analysis utilized multiple logistic regression tests for determinant modeling. The results indicated that variables such as age, low birth weight (LBW), air temperature, air humidity, and light intensity had an impact on the incidence of pneumonia. Among these, air humidity had the greatest impact, with an odds ratio (OR) of 9.60. Children living in areas with inadequate air humidity were 9.60 times more likely to develop pneumonia compared to those living in areas with adequate humidity.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship education in Vocational High Schools (SMK) is crucial for equipping students with practical skills and soft skills needed to be self-reliant and innovative in pursuing job opportunities or creating their own businesses. However, despite the implementation of entrepreneurship education, many SMK graduates have yet to succeed in becoming independent and innovative entrepreneurs. Previous research has primarily focused on curriculum development, teaching methods, and the role of educators, with limited attention to how students’ perceptions of entrepreneurship education impact their success as entrepreneurs. This issue reveals a gap between the delivery of entrepreneurship education and students' readiness to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of SMK Tourism students toward entrepreneurship education and its implications for entrepreneurial capabilities, as well as to identify barriers hindering the development of entrepreneurial spirit. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods with descriptive analysis. The qualitative approach includes in-depth interviews with teachers, principals, and alumni from four SMK Tourism schools in Jakarta, along with observations of infrastructure and cooking practice activities. Quantitative data were collected through a Google Form-based questionnaire survey targeting students from 13 SMK Tourism schools with a focus on Culinary Arts. The study results show that while most students hold positive perceptions of entrepreneurship education, challenges such as knowledge gaps, learning intensity, financial limitations, mental and emotional preparedness, entrepreneurship materials, collaboration and communication skills, and marketing and location barriers are the main obstacles for students aiming to become self-reliant entrepreneurs.
