Abstract

This study explores the life and contributions of Muda Waly al-Khalidi (1917–1961), a prominent Acehnese ulama who played a crucial role in shaping Islamic education, Sufi practices, and ulama politics of religious authority in Aceh. Muda Waly was instrumental in advancing the Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah (Aswaja) theological tradition and propagating the Naqshbandiyya Khalidiyya tariqa.Naqshbandiyah Khalidiyah tariqa. He founded the Darussalam Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Labuhanhaji, which became a significant center for Islamic learning in Aceh. His efforts also extended into politics through his involvement with Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah (PERTI), a traditionalist Islamic organization countering modernist influences. Using Foucault’s genealogy approach, this study examines the intellectual and religious formation of Muda Waly, tracing his educational lineage in Sumatra and Mecca, his engagement in theological debates, and his role in shaping Aceh’s religious landscape.  I argue that the legacy of Muda Waly al-Khalidi represents an intricate process of knowledge formation and power relations in Aceh’s religious landscape. His establishment of pesantren, propagation of the Naqshbandiyya Khalidiyya Sufi order, and resistance to modernist movements illustrate the genealogical development of religious authority. His contributions demonstrate how religious authoritytraditions are continuously reshaped through negotiation, appropriation, and resistance. Future studies could further explore how his epistemic legacy continues to evolve in response to emerging theological and political contestations in Indonesia.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: suluk, tarekat naqsyabandiyah, tawajuh, rurar sufism, urban sufism                                                                              Abstract            The purpose of this paper is to confirm the presence of tarekat traditions in Islamic rural communities that have been ingrained in the culture. Along with the growth of Sufism in urban regions, the practice of tarekat in rural areas has recently been deemed incapable of adapting to the circumstances, particularly the needs of a reasonable and pragmatic contemporary society. In reality, traditional tarekat is still very much practiced by the rural population and is part of the religious rituals there. This research focuses on Aceh Selatan District, one of the places in Aceh where the Naqsyabandiyah Khalidiyah congregation has grown quickly. This essay demonstrates, via observation and interviews with tarekat adherents, that the application of the tarekat in Islam in rural areas of Aceh has not changed much. This is due to the absence of variables in the village community that contribute to the formation of urban urban communities, such as stress and the loss of spiritual guidance. On the other side, they lack the capacity to study independently in order to explore Sufi knowledge, therefore they rely solely on the instructor. In rural areas, mysticism in tarekat is positioned as part of religious rites in preparation for the end of the world. Keywords: suluk, tarekat naqsyabandiyah, tawajuh, rurar sufism, urban sufism

Abstract

This article examines the significant role of the Azharites (Al-Azhar alumni) in reshaping Islamic knowledge alongside the transformation of urban religious learning in Banda Aceh over the past two decades. The study highlights their contributions to disseminating Islamic knowledge through platforms like the Middle East Alumni Association (Ikatan Alumni Timur Tengah—IKAT), advanced reading communities, mosques, coffee shops, and mass/social media. They have facilitated public learning in classical Islamic knowledge, such as tafsīr, taḥsin al-Qur’an, ḥadīth, fiqh, uṣūl al-fiqh, ʿaqīdah, sīrah, and mawārith by introducing not only basic and intermediate but also advanced religious texts. Furthermore, the Azharites have promoted also Wasaṭism (wasaṭiyyah, moderation) in the understanding of Islam, rooted in Shafi'ite-Ash'arite traditions, while incorporating texts from other madhhabs, such as the Hanafite, Hanbalite, and Malikite schools, in comparative way. Their approach distinguishes them from both the strict madhhabism and the anti-madhhabism of Salafi-Wahhabism and radical Islamism. The study concludes that the Azharites have contributed to the discursive democratization and reform, which have resulted in the reshaping of Islamic knowledge in Banda Aceh—and Aceh province in general—and the moderation of madhhabism, by introducing Wasaṭism and fostering alternative urban religious learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how members of disadvantaged communities imagine "other lives," and how such perceptions influence their own lives. This study will explore how society defines things that are unseen but are believed to exist and may impact human existence by having a look at the overseas Javanese population in the Gayo highlands in Aceh. The findings of this study will be used to illustrate how society views these creatures. This study, in contrast to the majority of other studies of overseas Javanese, is interested in how the construction efforts of danyang and prewangan are and how they communicate with each other. Other studies of overseas Javanese focus on topics such as cultural assimilation, conflict, and resilience. The information needed for this study was gleaned through participant observation and in-depth interviews with local Javanese residents of Aceh's Bener Meriah District. Because of the economic and cultural marginalization they face when interacting with the dominant ethnic groups of Gayo and Aceh, which persuades them to seek alternative protection, this article demonstrates that the concepts of danyang and prewangan are part of the identity that was brought from Javanese culture.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the transformation of religious rituals and understanding among the Javanese Muslim community that migrated to the Gayo Highlands, Aceh Province, in the early twentieth century. This article is based on an ethnographic study by the author in the Gayo highlands of District Bener Meriah, Aceh Province. The author employs three primary data collection methods: observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The author also conducted a literature study pertinent to this paper to round out the data analysis. This study showed that religious belief and practice had been transformed among the Javanese migrants in Aceh over nearly a half-century. This transformation occurred from understanding the religion, which tends to be Kejawen, to Muhammadiyah's understanding. Then, after three decades, there was a fresh shift in understanding from Muhammadiyah to Dayah, which has continued until now. The Javanese migrants in Aceh are not resistant to changes in religious thought in their culture. Because not many Javanese migrants in Aceh studied religion specifically, anyone who comes will be easily accepted and welcomed. This makes religious transformation in Javanese migrant society in Aceh possible without significant conflict.

Abstract

The transformation of traditional Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in peripheral areas such as Aceh Singkil reflects an adaptive response to the demands of Islamic education modernization, social challenges, and the need to integrate Islamic values within contemporary society. Pesantren are no longer merely centers for classical religious transmission; they have evolved into dynamic institutions capable of educational, social, and religious innovation. This study explores the transformation strategies implemented by three prominent pesantren in Aceh Singkil Dayah Babussalam, Darul Muta’alimin, and Darul Hasanah focusing on the integration of educational, social, and religious dimensions. This research employed a qualitative case study approach with data collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The analytical framework used was Talcott Parsons' AGIL model (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, Latency). The findings reveal that each pesantren pursued distinct innovations: curriculum integration, digital learning initiatives, alumni involvement in institutional reform, and the promotion of Islamic moderation through leadership and community outreach. These institutions have successfully built integrative models rooted in traditional values while remaining responsive to contemporary demands. The transformation observed is evolutionary, collaborative, and centrally led by kyai figures who serve both as preservers of tradition and agents of change. This study contributes to the discourse on adaptive Islamic education models that retain salafiyah authenticity while meeting global educational challenges.

Abstract

In the digital era, Sufism has undergone a transformation in both its dissemination and organization. Once grounded in local communities, Sufism now leverages digital media to reach a global audience, expanding its spiritual network beyond geographical boundaries. This article addresses the primary issues of how digitalization affects the dissemination of Sufi teachings, the formation of transnational communities, and challenges related to authenticity and privacy. The research employs a literature review method, analyzing scholarly publications on Sufism, digital religion, and online communication from academic sources such as Taylor & Francis, JSTOR, MDPI, and DOAJ. This approach enables a comprehensive analysis of three aspects: the spread of Sufi ideas, digital organizational models, and the role of media in strengthening community networks. The findings reveal that digital media facilitates Sufi ideological campaigns, creates technology-based organizational structures, and strengthens community bonds. However, mediatization also presents challenges in preserving the authenticity of teachings and protecting follower privacy. The article concludes that digital media offers significant opportunities for the global development of Sufism but requires careful efforts to maintain the essential values of Sufi spirituality.

Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive examination of the impact of Islamic education on vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, at Dayah Diniyyah Darussalam in West Aceh. The primary objective of this study is to explore how Islamic education functions as both a source of religious knowledge and a transformative force that empowers women and supports the development of children within the dayah environment. This research employs a qualitative, ethnographic approach. The study collects data through prolonged observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the iceberg analysis model throughout the research process, enabling the researchers to uncover observable practices and deeper structural and cultural patterns. The analytical process concludes with a synthesis phase to ensure that the conclusions accurately represent the overall findings. The results indicate that Islamic education at Dayah Diniyyah Darussalam extends beyond doctrinal instruction; it actively catalyzes social transformation by strengthening women’s capacities, increasing their participation in community life, and fostering a sense of agency. For children, Islamic education promotes balanced intellectual, emotional, moral, and spiritual growth. The study also emphasizes that Islamic education advocacy plays a crucial role in shaping future educational orientations and policy frameworks, particularly in contexts with similar socio-cultural characteristics. The implications of this research extend beyond West Aceh and offer valuable insights for education policymakers, Islamic education practitioners, and stakeholders seeking to adopt or adapt similar community-based educational models.

Abstract

This article examines the historical transformation of zuhd (asceticism) into Sufism as a significant ethical and epistemological development in early Islamic spirituality. While previous studies have explored the origins of Sufism, relatively little attention has been given to how this transition reshaped the moral and intellectual formation of the religious subject. This study therefore investigates the emergence of what may be called the “Sufi self” through the gradual transformation of early Islamic ascetic practices. Using a historical–textual approach, the article analyzes the teachings of three influential figures in early Islamic piety: al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, Rābiʿah al-ʿAdawiyyah, and al-Ḥārith al-Muḥāsibī. Their ethical and spiritual teachings illustrate the shift from an ascetic discipline grounded in fear of divine judgment toward a more interiorized spirituality centered on love, introspection, and self-knowledge. By situating these developments within the socio-historical context of early Abbasid society, the study shows how changing social conditions contributed to the interiorization of religious practice. The findings suggest that the emergence of the Sufi self represents not a rupture with early Islamic asceticism but its transformation into a reflective spiritual anthropology in which ethical vigilance becomes a form of epistemic self-awareness. This study contributes to the broader understanding of early Sufism by demonstrating how the ascetic ethos of zuhd evolved into a systematic discipline of inner knowledge and moral self-examination.
