Abstract

The number of paddy production in Labuhanbatu Utara Regency, North Sumatera Province, Indonesia, continues to decline from year to year, partly due to the reduction in the area of paddy fields. This was caused by land conversion from paddy fields to non-paddy fields. This research aims to analyze the pattern of changes in the process of paddy fields to non-paddy fields in Labuhanbatu Utara Regency and its suitability on the regional spatial plan between 2017 and 2021. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data was processed and analyzed using an overlapping method on biophysical data, existing conditions, and other thematic data, using Geographic Information System. The results showed that there had been a reduction in the area from paddy fields to non-paddy fields of 2,992.88 hectares from 2017-2021. It is dominated by conversion from paddy fields to oil palm areas of 2,795.58 hectares. The conversion suitability of paddy fields to non-paddy fields in 2017-2021 against Labuhanbatu Utara regional spatial plan is 21.92 percent, while 78.08 percent is not. To maintain food security in Labuhanbatu Utara Regency, the government should tighten supervision of the implementation of the regional spatial plan as well as increase the allocation of paddy fields.

Abstract

Penatapan Doulu is one of the popular tourist areas in Karo Regency, Indonesia. Tourism activities cause waste problems that have the potential to pollute the surrounding environment. This study aims to analyze and evaluate waste problems in the Penatapan Doulu tourism area which includes waste management policies and methods, as well as providing future considerations for proposed waste management strategies through the concept of collaborative management. This study analyzes all kinds of waste generated from 30 restaurants located in the Penatapan Doulu tourist area. The method for calculating waste generation and composition is based on SNI 19-3964-1994. The results showed that the total waste generation reached 76.03 kg/day with the waste composition dominated by plastic 42.02%, fruit peels 28.07%, and food 13.46%. Evaluation of the current condition obtained a value of 2.58 which is categorized as moderate. Proposed strategies that need to be carried out in the Penatapan Doulu tourist area are making trash bins based on the type of waste and pilot village programs which are a concrete manifestation of synergy between stakeholders and handling waste problems must be carried out by all parties with collaborative management carried out effectively.

Abstract

Mangrove forests are important ecosystems. However, land conversion and degradation have destroyed a significant area of mangrove. Mangrove restoration employing native species has been performed in several degraded areas, including some North Sumatra regions. However, information regarding floristic diversity in monoculture restoration areas is still limited. This research aims to analyze the floristic diversity in the mangrove restoration area, which is dominated by Soneratia alba species in Pasar Rawa Village, North Sumatra. The plotted path approach was employed for vegetation analysis in a 3-ha area in Pasar Rawa. The findings revealed that 8 (eight) species were found in the S. alba restoration area. The highest Important Value Index (IVI) in the seedling stage was found in Acanthus ilicifolius, while at the sapling and tree stages, S. alba was the highest. The highest diversity index was obtained at the sapling stage, which was 1.46 (medium), and the lowest was obtained at the tree stages, which were 0.26 (low). The result showed a new recruitment of seedlings in the research location, although the species diversity value is still lower. The appearance of new species, particularly pioneer species, in the research area indicates that natural succession processes are currently taking place. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the community oil palm replanting program on the economic growth of community oil palm farmers in Batu Bara Regency. This research uses quantitative methods with multiple linear regression analysis techniques. Primary data was obtained from 75 respondents of smallholder oil palm farmers in Batu Bara District. The results showed that administration and human resources have a positive and significant influence on the economic growth of smallholders. Meanwhile, oil palm land, facilities and infrastructure, and sustainability have no influence on the economic growth of smallholders. This study implies that it is important to increase training and technical support for assistants and smallholders. The government needs to provide financing and incentives to encourage farmers' participation in the smallholder oil palm replanting program. A holistic economic growth strategy is needed, such as diversification of oil palm products, improvement of the value chain, and integration with other sectors. It is necessary to build strong cooperation with relevant stakeholders to improve program implementation and maximize economic benefits for smallholders.
