Abstract

Problem solving skills as one of the 21st century skills should strongly be focused in education because when students practice problem solving consistently, they can develop better social and situational awareness – the ones required in this social impact era. This study aimed at describing the infusion of problem solving skills in microlearning videos for non-English major students. In addition, it delineates the feasibility of the materials using a small-scale piloting. The study employs library research for the procedures of infusion and pilot study for the feasibility of the designed materials. The findings encompass detailed descriptions and procedures of the learning materials enclosed with a feasibility measurement conducted by a panel of three English learning materials experts and 50 participants as target users. The participants involved eleven English course instructors and thirty-nine students. The feasibility measures indicate that the microlearning video prototypes received satisfactory results. These results suggest that microlearning videos have the potential to enhance problem solving skills which in turns revamp the 21st century skills. The naturally determined characteristic of microlearning videos are also befitting the demand for bite-sized content of information, self-paced learning, mobile-friendly accessibility which undergo learning experience of students in digital era, especially in EFL context within higher education.

Abstract

Writing an essay is still a challenge for students even for those at the university level. There are many difficulties they find when they try to write it. First, especially in non-English speaking countries, students lack vocabulary, they do not have ideas to write, they are still confused about the mechanics, and they find it difficult to organize the writing. Since the problems are complex, giving only the theories of writing to the students is not adequate. Teachers have to ‘arm’ the students with tools. There are many tools available today on the internet, yet not many students are able to use them correctly. They need guidance to use them in the correct way. This research aims at developing a digital teaching tool to assist students in writing an essay. The research is done by doing need analysis, designing the digital tool, and finally testing the designed teaching tool. The digital teaching tool is named as Diglit which stands for Digital Literacy. It is named so since the tool guides the students to use their literacy skills for constructing a better essay. The research employed ASSURE design to develop the teaching tool. At the end of the process, the tool is tested for its effectiveness using quasi experimental research and it is found out that there is an effect of the use of Diglit on the students’ writing skill. Hence, the result shows that the digital tool created from the research is able to help the students construct an essay.

Abstract

AbstractMicrolearning is becoming more popular in education due to its convenience, flexibility,  and effectiveness.  The popularity emerges from the use of chunking of materials in short and understandable components  that makes it easier for learners to attain the information at their convenience. Preferably, learning materials are microlearning-designed. However, since not many teachers are well-informed about microlearning, the existing learning materials may not be microlearning-based designed. Studies focusing on this issue are relatively limited. This study aims to analyze whether English learning materials at senior high school are designed based on microlearning principles. Twenty four English learning materials covering various types of materials including textbook, e-module, webpage, as well as, pre-recorded teaching and YouTube videos designed for grade X, XI, and XII collected from three senior high schools in Jakarta were analyzed using microlearning framework. The findings of this study show that the existing learning materials do not conform to microlearning  principles. The results of this study reveals the needs to design microlearning-based materials, break the lesson units into micro contents, and produce microlearning object materials for English lessons in high schools. Key Words: microlearning, English learning materials, microlearning object materials

Abstract

This study examines the teacher's morphological awareness in teaching English, specifically focusing on the past-tense verb forms. The analysis is based on a YouTube instructional video titled "Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Kelas 8 SMP: Simple Past Tense," the objective is to identify the application of morphological theories in teaching method employed. The research questions based on three primary aspects: The morphological awareness indicators evident in the teaching techniques used by the teacher in the video; The extent to which the teacher uses morphemes to teach past tense; The ways used by the teacher to demonstrate the application of theories and strategies of teaching past tense verbs in the instructional video. The results indicate that the teacher demonstrates a strong understanding of morphological awareness, clearly explaining verb changes, and applying interactive educational techniques. The study highlights the significance of morphological awareness in language instruction and proposes that digital platforms such as YouTube might improve the teaching and learning process. The research provides useful insights into the implementation of morphological awareness in classroom settings and offers recommendations for additional research and practice. Despite its emphasis on a single YouTube video, this study not only improves comprehension of morphological awareness in digital contexts, but it also offers practical solutions for educators to improve grammar teaching effectiveness. Keywords: content analysis, digital platforms language teaching techniques, morphological awareness, past tense verbs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the rhetorical persuasion strategies in the presidential campaign speeches of Donald Trump in the United States and Prabowo Subianto in Indonesia. The approach employed is descriptive qualitative, using a comparative case study design. Data were collected from the official speech transcripts of both candidates and analyzed through classical rhetorical categories, ethos, pathos, and logos, complemented by framing analysis, agenda-setting, and critical discourse analysis. Findings reveal that Donald Trump employed a confrontational and populist rhetorical strategy. He constructed an image of himself as the people's protector against the political elite, evoked collective emotions such as fear and anger, and used hyperbolic logic to reinforce his political arguments. His rhetorical style was dominated by metaphors of battle and national crisis. In contrast, Prabowo Subianto employed a more nationalistic and integrative rhetorical style. He built credibility through narratives of nationalism, conveyed messages of hope and unity, and promoted a development and self-reliance agenda as the logical framework of his campaign. The analysis indicates that campaign speeches are not merely tools of political communication but also practices of meaning-making that reflect power structures, political identities, and issue priorities. This study offers a deeper understanding of the dynamics of political rhetoric within different cultural contexts and contributes to the development of cross-national political communication studies.

Abstract

Preserving humor effects that arise from flouting conversational principles in culturespecific texts presents specific difficulties when translating regional languages deeply rooted in linguistic and cultural variation. This type of humor depends on complex linguistic, cultural, and situational contexts, resulting in difficulty in replicating the same effect in the target language. This study investigates humor translation strategies and translation quality of two advanced AI language models, i.e., ChatGPT 4.0 and Gemini 2.5, in rendering culture-specific humor that deliberately violates Grice’s maxims of cooperation and Leech’s politeness principles. The study focuses on translations from Sundanese into English using 20 humorous texts selected from Cangehgar, a well-known Sundanese humor anthology characterized by deliberate violations of conversational and politeness principles. Chiaro’s four-option humor translation framework is employed to identify the strategies used, while Larson’s scales of clarity, accuracy, and naturalness are applied to evaluate translation quality. A descriptive qualitative approach is adopted, in which the selected humorous texts were purposively sampled based on their clear instances of flouting conversational and politeness principles. The findings indicate that while both models employ distinct translation strategies, their effectiveness in preserving the humor’s original intent varies. ChatGPT establishes stronger capability in maintaining the structure and essence of humor in the punchlines, whereas Gemini’s adaptations tend to dilute the comedic impact. This study contributes to the growing academic discourse on AI’s role in humor translation and its broader implications for cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

Microlearning is a short-term learning strategy that can increase students' interest in learning. It is in line with the characteristics of today's students who cannot focus on learning for long periods of time. The study was conducted at three senior high schools in Bogor, Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze microlearning in writing English learning materials for the tenth grader. This research employed a content analysis approach. The data sources are learning materials from two student books from two publishers that refer to Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar as well as additional learning materials developed by teachers such as PowerPoint slides, explainer videos, and infographics. Interviews with three English teachers were also conducted. The result of the study showed that the microlearning features in each unit are not entirely satisfied, although numerous media have been found in a short amount of time, there are still certain components that have not been addressed. The study suggested that to improve students' writing English learning experiences, book writers and teachers should emphasize microlearning aspects and critical thinking skills more in learning materials.

Abstract

This study examines the information literacy (IL) competencies of EFL students at Indonesian higher education institutions. The study aims to (1) identify overall levels of information literacy competency, (2) examine strengths and weaknesses across five core IL components, (3) describe the distribution of competencies across undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, and (4) determine instructional priorities to inform embedded information literacy development within English education curricula. A descriptive survey design was employed involving 227 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from three Indonesian universities. Data were collected using the 40-item Information Literacy Test (ILT), which assesses competencies in recognizing information needs, locating information, evaluating information, using information, and applying information ethically. Descriptive statistics, non-parametric group comparisons, and correlational analyses were conducted to examine performance patterns across educational levels and IL components. The results indicate that students demonstrated a moderate level of overall information literacy competency, with substantial overlap in score distributions across educational levels. Although postgraduate students achieved slightly higher mean scores than undergraduates, these differences were modest and not statistically significant. Students performed strongest in using information for academic tasks, while lower performance was observed in evaluating information and applying information ethically. The findings suggest that progression through higher levels of formal education does not automatically lead to systematic development of information literacy competencies among EFL students. Persistent weaknesses in evaluative judgment and ethical use of information across educational stages highlight the need for intentional, curriculum-embedded information literacy instruction within English education programs. This study provides an empirically grounded, component-level profile of information literacy competencies to support more coherent and pedagogically aligned instructional practices in Indonesian higher education. Keywords: information literacy, higher education, EFL, information literacy test.
