Abstract

Background: The number of people with diabetes mellitus in Indonesia is increasing every year. The data in 2016 showed that 1 of 11 adults could have diabetes mellitus. Uncontrolled and untreated diabetes mellitus can cause complications. Objectives: This activity aimed to determine the group of age that have a potential risk of hypertension and diabetes so that it could minimize the prevalence of disease and optimize human productivity. Methods: (1) Counseling about hypertension and diabetes, (2) Screening the people with a potential risk of hypertension using tensimeter and diabetes prediction using point-of-care testing (POCT) and urine dipstick. Results: The data were collected from 75 respondents with characteristics about 85,33% female and 14,67% male. About 25 respondents (33,33%) were suspected of hypertension. Based on age group, it showed that the highest incident rate of hypertension was found in the age group of 41-60 years (41,86%), followed by the age group of 61-80 years (20%), 21-40 years (13,33%), and age under 20 years and above 80 years (0%). The majority of respondents had a normal glucose level(90,67%). Based on gender, there was 1 male respondent (9,09%)and5female respondents  (7,81%) having a glucose level higher than normal value (hyperglycemia). Conclusion:  The age group with the highest potential risk for hypertension was 41-60 years, while for diabetes was 61-80 years. This activity provided information to prevent the potential risk leading to hypertension and diabetes.

Abstract

Background: Since its first report, COVID-19 has remained a major threat worldwide. Various attempts were made to treat and prevent further transmission of COVID-19. In Indonesia, although the first case was reported nearly five months after the first case in Wuhan, the transmission was the fastest among Southeast Asian countries. Several efforts have been made to prevent further transmission. Objective: Our community services program aimed to assess the public understanding of COVID-19 symptoms and the application of SHE (Self and Environmental Health) as a form of COVID-19 prevention. Method: We conducted counseling using a door-to-door method to increase the understanding of SHE as a form of COVID-19 prevention and then at the end of the visit, a questionnaire was given to measure the understanding of symptoms and prevention COVID-19 transmission. Results: After conducted the door-to-door counselling in Kandangan district, it is known that the public understanding of the symptoms and ways of preventing COVID-19 is quite good. The method of prevention that is understood by the public includes using masks, diligently wash hands, and maintain social distance in gathering. However, there are still people who do not understand (31.13%) that increasing their immune system by consuming nutritious and balanced food and exercise can also be used to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. Because a good immune system can prevent individuals from infection with pathogens such as COVID-19. Conclusion: The community has sufficient understanding of the symptoms and ways of preventing COVID-19 so that it is expected it can reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in Benowo District, Surabaya.

Abstract

Background: Feline panleukopenia is a viral disease caused by the family of Parvoviridae. Many species of pets, especially cats, that if they have been infected, compromised health and can lead to death. Purpose: To determine the infection pattern and treatment of feline panleukopenia in cats at the Educational Animal Hospital of Universitas Airlangga. Method: Ten patients were recorded as infected with parvovirus from a total of 1107 patients with various disease complaints. Daily records were taken regarding all clinical symptoms, physical examination, and treatment. Result: After four weeks, the obtained data were calculated. Thus, we collect data that show essential factors that can be used to determine the diagnose of feline panleukopenia in cats. Conclusion: Most parvovirus infections occurred in cats aged two to four years by showing abnormalities in temperature, breathing, and turgor. Clinical symptoms that appeared include vomiting, diarrhea, and high dehydration. Treatments were used to suppress the secondary effects of parvovirus infection and besides to eradicate the virus itself.

Abstract

Background: Eggs are poultry products that cannot be separated from the possibility of Salmonella contamination. Traditional markets are places where consumers can get chicken eggs with poor hygiene and sanitation aspects. Habits of today's society that often consumes raw or undercooked eggs can trigger Salmonellosis. Purpose: To identify the presence of Salmonella sp. in eggs sold in Magetan Regency Vegetable Market. Method: Sampling of eggs from different random stores. The eggs then proceeded with selection pre-enrichment, selective enrichment, isolation, and identification. Results: The handling of eggs in the Magetan Regency Market was quite good in its storage period, and purebred eggs sold in the Magetan Regency Market were negatively contaminated with Salmonella sp. Conclusion: Broiler chicken eggs sold in Magetan Vegetable Market are safe to consume.

Abstract

Backgrounds: Broiler chickens are high productivity livestock. To achieve this productivity, many farmers provide feed additives. Fermented milk is one of the feed additives given through drinking water. Providing feed additives, regularly, will affect the performance of these broilers. Purpose: To investigate the potential of providing fermented milk through drinking water on the performance of broiler chickens. Method: Direct observations and perform calculations on several aspects that support the research. Result: After making observations, it was known that there are differences in the starter phase and the finisher phase. The observation was carried out from the age of 0-27 days. Broiler performance determined by the parameters of feed consumption, chicken body weight, and feed conversion. Conclusion: The observation shows an increase in feed consumption. However, in feed conversion and body weight gain instability is caused by physical conditions, temperature, and palatability in each phase of the broiler chickens.

Abstract

Vero cell culture as a platform for producing viral vaccines is an established and standardized process in vaccine manufacture. Generally, Vero cell culture requires media as a source of nutrition with serum supplementation to provide growth factors. However, the serum has several disadvantages including batch to batch variation and adventitious agent. Therefore, chemically defined serum-free media (SFM) are formulated by using standardized growth factors. Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is one of growth factors that showed adequate mitogenic support in serum-free medium system, especially in Vero cells. In this study, SFM-EGF media was compared with serum supplementation media, namely MEM 10% and MEM 5% FBS supplementation. The cell morphology was observed using an inverted microscope and their proliferation was evaluated using a MTT colorimetric-based assay. Vero E6 and Vero CCL-81 cells morphology did not show any morphological changes. Vero E6 and Vero CCL-81 proliferation in SFM-EGF media on day one to four did not show a significant difference compared to MEM 10% or MEM 5% serum supplementation media. However, the OD values of both Vero E6 and Vero CCL-81 cells given SFM-EGF media produced an average value below MEM 10% but higher than MEM 5% FBS supplementation. As such, this study proved that utilizing SFM-EGF could support the proliferation of Vero E6 and Vero CCL-81 cells.

Abstract

Background: Mycoplasma galliseptium (MG) is a pathogenic microbial often found in poultry farm industry. In Indonesia there are rarely data of MG research. There are some factors increased the risk of MG infection. Purpose: This research aimed to determine the factors involved in the transmission of MG in commercial layer chicken farm. Method: This was a descriptive research with the data was collected from pairwise comparison questionnaire distributed to poultry expert. The Data was analyzed using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) supported by computer programme "Expert Choice”. Result: The results showed that risk value of rearing management (0.425), health management (0.312), feed management (0.088), and biosecurity of  farm (0.175) to the transmission of MG. The results of AHP analysis to the risk factor variables of MG infection in commercial layer chicken farm showed that the highest risk value of MG infection was the number of bird in house (0.277), followed by antibiotic administration (0.276), while the other variables only have risk value under 0.100. Conclusion: The highest risk value of MG infection was rearing management factor especially on the variable of the population number of poultry in house.

Abstract

Background: HIV/AIDS cases continue to increase globally. A person with a weak immune system, especially people with HIV/AIDS, is very susceptible to various diseases, such as tuberculosis. Tuberculosis infection can be associated with HIV-positive individuals, which is caused by damage to cellular immunity due to the reduced number and function of CD4 cells. Purpose: To determine the profile of HIV/AIDS patients with TB coinfection based on CD4 values in RSUD Ibnu Sina Gresik. Method: The method used is observational analytical cross-sectional. Patients with TB and HIV coinfection were recapitulated from the Case Report Form (CRF). The results are presented in a frequency distribution table. Result: The study obtained information about 36 people with TB co-infected HIV/AIDS cases. Patients with CD4 values <200 cells/mm3 were 35 people (97.22%), and most of them were in the age group of 20-60 years were 35 people (97.22%). Male patients (83.33 %) dominate compared to female patients (16.67%). The duration of TB coinfection in HIV/AIDS patients occurs in less than one month, which is 21 people (58.33%). Conclusion: The profile of HIV/AIDS patients co-infected with TB is based on CD4 values that are more dominant in men, with the highest age being 20 - 60 years.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 requires effective vaccines to be developed. This study aimed to assess the impact of a SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine candidate in k18-hACE2 mice by monitoring their body weight, immune activation, and inflammatory cytokines including IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. The study utilized k18-hACE2 mice expressing the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) receptor. The mice were administered the inactivated vaccine candidate compared with sham and vehicle. Body weight was monitored, and serum samples were collected to measure IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ levels using ELISA. Data were evaluated using SPSS statistical analysis software. The administration of the SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine candidate in k18-hACE2 mice did not result in significant changes in body weight compared to the control group. Furthermore, the levels of IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ were significantly reduced in the vaccinated mice compared to the control group, suggesting a dampening effect on the inflammatory response. This study demonstrates that the SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine candidate has a minimal impact on the body weight of k18-hACE2 mice. Nevertheless, it successfully regulates the levels of IL-4, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ, suggesting its safety and beneficial impact. These findings contribute to understanding the vaccine's efficacy and safety profile in vaccine development.

Abstract

Rabbit as a laboratory animals play an important role in bridging basic research to clinical application. The exploration of rabbit mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) is still facing an obstacle regarding the standardization of characterization of MSC. This study is aimed to explore the novel candidate of rabbit MSC surface marker as an effort to establish the goal standardization of rabbit MSC. Three 2-month-old male White New Zealand rabbits weighing 2 kg were used as visceral rabbit adipose derived mesenchymal stem cell (Rab-ADMSC) donors. The cells were characterized according to their morphology characteristic, clonogenic and three-lineage differentiation capacity. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate the MSC surface markers of Rab-ADMSC against CD81, CD29, CD34 and CD45. The results of this study revealed that the Rab-ADMSC posses characteristic of MSC according to their morphology and differentiation capacity. It can be concluded that CD81 surface marker can be proposed as a stable alternative candidate marker for rabbit MSCs. This data is supported by other phenotypic characteristics of MSCs, both in morphology and in the ability of visceral Rab-ADMSCs to differentiate into adipogenic, osteogenic, and chondrogenic lineages.
