Abstract

Continuous exploitation of fossil fuels causes scarcity, so appropriate solutions and policies are needed. One of these solutions is to utilize vegetable oil, and one of them comes from sunflower seed oil, which contains 17% oleic fatty acid and around 73% linoleic. However, its high viscosity, making it difficult to burn, hampers its use as an alternative fuel. Therefore, efforts are made to reduce its viscosity. One of these efforts is to add a catalyst in the form of active nano bio carbons derived from areca nut skin. Droplet combustion is chosen to increase the contact area between air and fuel so that the reactivity of fuel molecules increases. The study's results showed that the quality of fuel produced from a mixture of sunflower seed oil and active nano biocarbon from areca nut skin was improved. It was found that a concentration of 1 ppm was the best compared to other concentrations (2 and 3 ppm). It can be seen that it was able to reduce the viscosity of sunflower seed oil to 11.16 cSt, reduce the flash point at 138°C, and can increase the droplet combustion rate by around 2.05 seconds.

Abstract

The effective and efficient use of biomass briquettes is strongly influenced by the type of stove used and the way it is used. This study aims to design a briquette stove by adding an adjuster: the test fuel used honeycomb briquettes and forest fern charcoal. The heat transfer from burning honeycomb briquettes to a pot of water needs to be maintained so that the heat (temperature) remains constant during the combustion process. In the current use of briquettes, the distance between the briquette flame and the pot of water is unstable because the space is getting further away from the pool of cooking water. The combustion distance is getting farther because the bottom of the initial honeycomb briquettes burns out, causing the surface of the briquettes to decrease and move away from the surface of the water pot. Thus the heat given to the pool of water will reduce. The briquette stove needs to be added with an adjuster to overcome this problem. This adjuster serves to raise the honeycomb briquettes if the surface of the briquettes decreases. With the addition of an adjuster, it will be analyzed how much the heat transfer rate and the stability of the burning distance of the honeycomb briquettes will be. In this study, 2 test models will be used: a stove with an adjuster and a stove without an adjuster, using 14 holes in honeycomb briquettes made from forest ferns using starch (tapioca) adhesive. The distance between the surface of the briquettes and the pot of boiled water is 5 cm. The results showed that the briquette stove using an adjuster could maintain the stability of the combustion distance between the surface of the briquette and the pot of water being cooked with an average temperature t = 567.83 0C and conduction heat transfer q = 5285.699 Watt.

Abstract

Advancements in science and technology are creating challenges for conventional materials such as metals, often struggle to meet the demands of modern industry. In response to the issue, train industry has begun developing applications of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite for interior panels. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the impact of fiber volume fraction and arrangement direction on tensile as well as bending tests. This research also aimed to identify variations in composite manufacturing process parameters to achieve optimal tensile and bending strength values. The research methodology was an experimental procedure with data analysis using Statistics Software. During the analysis, the results showed that the fiber volume fraction of 30% with the fiber arrangement direction of 0° produced optimal tensile and bending strength values. Tensile and bending tests produced results of 100.82 kg/mm2 and 102.27 kg/mm2, respectively. A high fiber volume fraction led to optimal tensile and bending strength values because the fiber served as the main reinforcement. Additionally, direction of the fiber arrangement played a significant role, with 0° fiber orientation producing better results due to a more even fiber distribution compared to 90° direction. The results of this research could be applied to the wall panels in the railway industry.

Abstract

Corncob waste in Naramben Village is traditionally underutilized and frequently subjected to open burning, leading to air pollution and localized environmental degradation. This program introduces simple pyrolysis technology to equip local residents with the practical skills needed to transform this agricultural waste into value-added commodities: liquid smoke and biochar. Executed through a participatory framework, the initiative combined strategic preparation, hands-on production workshops, and educational dissemination. The program drove a substantial shift in community renewable energy literacy, with participants successfully adopting liquid smoke as an organic pesticide and natural fish preservative. From a technical standpoint, utilizing a 50-liter drum-type pyrolyzer over a two-hour cycle consistently yielded 1.5 to 2 liters of liquid smoke and 5 kg of biochar per batch. Evaluations confirmed that the direct demonstration approach effectively fostered operational independence among the villagers. Ultimately, this localized waste-to-energy model mitigates open-burning pollution, unlocks new micro-economic avenues, and advances clean energy resilience.

Abstract

Agricultural intensification in Indonesia increasingly relies on fossil energy inputs while leaving substantial agricultural residues underutilized. In Papua’s Keerom lowlands (<100 m altitude), maize expansion has created opportunities for integrating sustainable irrigation management with biomass-based energy systems. This study proposes a dual-pillar agro-energy framework combining irrigation efficiency analysis with pyrolysis–fermentation pathways for valorizing corn residues, particularly cobs and husks. Field survey data from 45 respondents were used to estimate energy inputs in maize cultivation, while pilot-scale pyrolysis experiments (450–550 °C) were conducted to evaluate biochar and bioenergy co-product generation. Results show that total energy input for corn production in Keerom averages 3,950 MJ ha⁻¹, substantially lower than values reported for mechanized highland systems. Slow pyrolysis produced approximately 27% biochar, 38% bio-oil, and 35% syngas, with biochar exhibiting a calorific value of 25.5 MJ kg⁻¹. Ethanol production through dilute acid hydrolysis and simultaneous saccharification fermentation yielded 28.3 L per 100 kg corn feedstock. The integrated system demonstrates potential for improving energy efficiency and reducing agricultural waste while generating decentralized renewable energy. These findings highlight the feasibility of circular agro-energy systems in tropical lowland environments and provide insights for sustainable biofuel development in eastern Indonesia.
