Abstract

The fermentation of cocoa beans is an important part of cocoa processing. Fermentation of cocoa beans increases the quality and price of the beans and the resultant cocoa. Although the fermentation of cocoa beans can increase the quality and income of cocoa farming, few farmers in Indonesia implement this fermentation process. This research therefore, focuses on the way Indonesian farmers assess whether or not to ferment their cocoa beans. A total of 284 cocoa farmers were sampled in Central Sulawesi Indonesia. The results showed that out of the more than 50% of farmers who did not ferment their cocoa beans, a majority were simply not interested in increasing the quality of the resultant cocoa. The quality of cocoa beans produced from smallholder plantations, therefore, was continually poor. The decision of cocoa farmers to ferment their cocoa beans, meanwhile, was significantly affected by the gender, age and education level of the head of the household, the number of productive family members, the quantity of cocoa bean production, and the resultant price of the fermented cocoa beans in the market. The resultant price of the fermented cocoa was the most dominant factor.

Abstract

Community needs for the shallot commodity take place regularly every day because it is a food flavoring ingredient. For this reason, it needs to be followed by the availability of production supplies that are in accordance with consumer needs. Sigi Regency is one of the centers of shallot and chili production in Central Sulawesi, so far it has not been able to make a real contribution in meeting the needs of the community which tends to increase. This is because the exploitation of shallots and chillies is still monoculture, so the risk of crop failure, production decline and farmers' losses is very high. This research was carried out with the aim to determine the growth and yield of shallots planted with various cropping patterns mong chillies, so that information on suitable cropping patterns can be obtained to ensure the availability of high yields of shallots and chillies to meet community needs. The results showed that (i) various shallot cropping patterns among chilli plants did not significantly affect the greenness of leaves, tuber length, fresh weight per tuber, fresh weight of tuber per clump, harvest index and moisture content of shallot bulbs; (ii) leaf length, harvest age and fresh tuber weight of onion bulbs per hectare planted with different cropping patterns among chilli plants were not significantly different, except with monoculture shallot cropping patterns obtained by longer leaves, shorter harvest age (62.0 days) and the weight of fresh bulbs per hectare is higher (1.83 t / ha) compared to various shallot cropping patterns among chilli plants.

Abstract

The decreased soil carrying capacity is due to reduced soil organic matter content, caused by disproportionally larger use of inorganic fertilizers and synthetic chemical pesticides in farming activities than organic fertilizers and environmentally friendly weeds, disease, and insect pests control materials. Reducing the use of inorganic fertilizers and synthetic chemical pesticides could be done by using production facilities of organic agriculture in the form of organic fertilizers and synthetic non-chemical pesticides on a larger scale, which base materials are available in nature. The problem faced by farmers in using these inputs is the lack of awareness and skills in producing organic inputs. This community service program with competitive schematics aims to assist the community in preparing local resource-based organic production inputs in Uwe Nuni Village, Palolo District. Specifically, to increase the awareness and skills of farmers in producing organic inputs based on local resources. The method used for counselling and training is Focus Group Discussion (FGD) approach, as well as practice and demonstration plots, which also provide technical guidance on making compost and botanical pesticides, and organic-based plant cultivation techniques. The results of the community service program show that the implementation of counselling and training increases the community’s awareness, skills, and attitudes by 38%, 56% and 54%, respectively. The compost made during the technology training was made from cow and goat manure, while the botanical insecticides were made from quickstick (Gliricidia sepium) plant leaves, papaya leaves, and soursop leaves. These plants are potential resources in Uwe Nuni Village, Palolo District.

Abstract

Marginal land is land that is less fertile because it has a low content of nutrients and organic matter. To increase soil fertility can be done by giving fertilizers, in the form of inorganic fertilizers, organic fertilizers, and biofertilizers. One of the biofertilizers used in agriculture today is a group of rhizosphere bacteria or often known as Plant Growth Promotion Rhizobacteria (PGPR). Community service aims to assist farmers in developing Plant Growth Promotion Rhizobacteria (PGPR). The method applied is training and mentoring. The results of the implementation of community service showed that the participants (farmers) were enthusiastic about participating in each activity topic, this was shown by the activeness of the participants at various stages of the activity. The results of the evaluation of the knowledge, skills and attitudes of farmers through the answers on the questionnaire given to the material on the technology of making and applying PGPR indicated that the skills of farmers to make PGPR increased by 70% and farmers who intend to develop and apply PGPR as biological fertilizer on their farms amounted to 60%. Thus, the implementation of community service motivates farmers to develop PGPR as a biofertilizer so that it is expected to optimize the use of marginal land to increase agricultural production
