Abstract

Science lessons are designed to help students understand natural phenomena and how to live side by side with nature. To build up such understanding, students need to acquire sufficient inquiry skills as part of the expected learning outcomes. However, science learning outcomes of seventh graders at SMP Negeri 1 Payakumbuh for the academic year 2021/2022 are still below the minimum mastery criteria. From observation, we found that students do not participate actively in classroom teaching, teacher do not implement suitable learning model and do not use supporting instructional materials. Environmental pollution is one of the topics in secondary school science that could serve as a context for students to apply their knowledge and 4C skills. This study aims to see the effect of applying the Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI) learning model assisted with ADI worksheet on science learning outcomes. This quasi-experiment research use Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Data were collected through multiple choice items and observation sheets, then analyzed with descriptive statistics. Our findings suggest that the use of ADI learning model influenced the science learning outcomes of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Payakumbuh. This is indicated by the 0.566 N-Gain of experimental class which is significantly higher than 0.290 of the control class

Abstract

Science learning is often associated with difficult topic to understand, lecture-dominated instructions, and low participation rate in classroom learning. Similar situation is observed at a secondary school in West Sumatra province, Indonesia. The observation also revealed that students’ cognitive learning outcomes is still under the minimum passing criteria for the topic of the earth's layer. To the citizen of an area that is in high-risk of natural disaster occurrence, sound understanding on the topic is crucial. Since science lesson is designed to develop students’ thinking and problem-solving ability, such understanding is important regarding students’ survival rate. If this situation remains unaddressed, it is concerning that achieving the goals of science lesson, especially related to the topic of Earth’s layer, will be constrained. Therefore, this study offers a solution by implementing the Cooperative Learning Index Card Match (CL-ICM) to see its impact on students’ cognitive learning outcomes. This quasi-experimental research used non-equivalent control group design andh purposive sampling technique to select 67 seventh graders from two classes as experiment and control group. A set of 20 multiple-choice questions was validated and tested for reliability as research instruments to measure students’ learning outcomes. Data was then analyzed with parametric statistics technique followed by hypothesis testing using independent sample t-test. The result of data analysis gave the sig. of 0.091, which led us to decide that the null hypothesis is accepted and research hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. Therefore, it can be summarized that the implementation of CL-ICM does not give significant impact on students’ cognitive learning outcomes on the topic of the earth's layer.

Abstract

Learning at UPT SMPN 1 Sutera seems to be still low, this is because the learning model used by teachers is still not appropriate and the discussion process has not been carried out well. One way to overcome this problem is to apply the STEM integrated Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. This research aims to determine the effect of the STEM integrated Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on student learning outcomes in human respiratory and excretory system material at UPT SMPN 1 Sutera. The type of research used in the research is Quasi Experiment, namely a research method to find the effect of certain treatments on others under controlled conditions. The design used in this research is the Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The population in this study were class VIII students at UPT SMPN 1 Sutera. The sample in this study consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class which were taken using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used consisted of an observation sheet on the implementation of the STEM integrated PBL model, pre-test and post-test questions. The research data obtained was then analyzed through descriptive statistical tests and inferential statistics using SPSS version 25. Based on the results of the analysis in hypothesis testing, it showed that there was a significant average difference between the control and experimental classes. The results of research hypothesis testing were found to be 0.000 and smaller than 0.05. Thus, it can be seen that the significant difference between Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected, so there is an influence. The conclusion from the hypothesis test is that there is a significant influence between students' scores using the STEM integrated PBL learning model. So H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. So there is an influence of the STEM integrated PBL model on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

The centralization of learning through a platform called Geschool to support Learning-From-Home in Padang city gives significant impacts to students’ learning competency, especially for science subject. Geschool provides the same materials and try-outs to all students and each lesson is scheduled at one time for all schools in the city. At this rate, there is a concern that science lesson could not be presented as its nature which is a process of gaining new knowledge which usually include laboratory work. This could lead to difficulty achieving the goal of science learning according to Kurikulum 2013. To address this concern, our team initiated a program to assist science teachers in SMP Negeri 15 and 34 Padang to conduct simple experiments with easily found local materials. Each participant was equipped with a pocket book containing 18 experiments relevant to the material for seventh, eight, and ninth grade. After the program ended, participants were required to submit a video of science experiment they did at home. Students’ responses to quiz and presentations of their own science experiments were taken as a measurement of scientific inquiry. Feedbacks from participants indicate eagerness to include these simple experiments as a part of science lesson onward..
