Abstract

The Manten Tebu (Sugarcane Bride) ritual in Rejoso village is an annual event before sugarcane milling. This tradition, preserved since the Dutch colonial era, carries deep symbolic meaning for the agrarian community. This study, based on a Detik jatim article from May 26, 2025, employs the Riffaterre semiotic method to analyze the tradition’s symbols. Using descriptive qualitative analysis, the research finds that Manten Tebu expresses respect for sugarcane as a source of livelihood and fertility, and reflects the relationship between the sugar factory and farmers. Symbolic elements—such as sugarcane pairs as bride and groom, offerings, processions, and prayers—form a system of signs embodying community hopes for a successful milling season.

Abstract

The application of less varied learning models and media in early reading instruction has an impact on the low achievement of students' early reading skills. This study aims to determine the improvement of early reading skills of first-grade students through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model using the PRABACA (Prasmanan Membaca) media at SDN 064974 Medan Tembung. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which includes a pre-cycle phase followed by three cycles: Cycle I, Cycle II, and Cycle III. Each cycle consists of four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data collection techniques include observation, tests, and documentation study. The data analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative. The results showed that the students' early reading ability in the pre-cycle phase revealed that out of 23 students, only 3 students achieved the minimum mastery criteria, with an average score of 38.5%. Therefore, the researcher continued to Cycle I. In Cycle I, the average score increased to 55.5%, with a classical mastery percentage of 35%. In Cycle II, the average score rose to 69.5%, with a classical mastery percentage of 61%. Further improvement was seen in Cycle III, with an average score of 88.5% and a classical mastery percentage of 91%. The percentage of students’ early reading skills improved in each cycle. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the PBL model based on PRABACA (Prasmanan Membaca) media in Indonesian language learning for first-grade students at SDN 064974 Medan Tembung resulted in an improvement in students’ early reading skills.

Five online media platforms were selected: a) Detik.com, b) Kompas.com, c) Tribunnews.com, d) Liputan6.com, and e) cnbcindonesia.com. A total of 200 election texts were collected between May 2023 and February 2024. The collected data were qualitatively reviewed in the form of digital texts.
