Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this study was to measure the frequency of students’ participation and factors affecting the participation and conducted using a descriptive method. The researcher used 2 categories of the questionnaire with 28 closed questions, observation and interview. The questions were put in Ratio Scale focusing on the students' opinion toward their participation. The observation was done twice in two weeks and continued to interview section where 10 students were taken to be interviewed. The study took place in SMKK Immanuel Kubu Raya and the participants were thirty-eight students from grade XII Marketing. The data was analyzed using formulas designed for counting the frequency of participation. For observation and interview, the analysis was done by coding and classification. Based on the calculation, the score showed  that the students’ participation tended to be normal to high. Factors affecting the students were divided into 3 areas; psychological, environmental and linguistic factors consisted of the lack of vocabulary followed by topical knowledge which affect the students the most. In conclusion, the students have good participation in English but are still affected by their vocabulary mastery and topical knowledge. Keywords: Factors Affecting Students’ Low Participation, English Speaking Subject, Participation

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this thesis was to improve students’ descriptive text writing by using pictures of grade 10A of SMAN 1 Kayan Hulu in the academic year 2016/ 2017. From the pre-observation interview, the writer found that the students had problems in using present tense and in differentiating the generic structure of descriptive text. Then, most of them lacked imagination and felt difficult to transfer their thoughts onto writing. This research was conducted through Classroom Action Research in two cycles. The participants of this research were 32 students in class 10A. The writer used measurement and observation technique to collect the data. He found that the students still had some problems of their writing in the first cycle, including generic structure, simple present tense, and the media used. To solve the students’ problem, the teacher decided to give more explanation about the use of simple present tense and generic structure of descriptive text, the teacher also asked the students to bring a dictionary in order to help the students in constructing a sentence. As a result in the second cycle, the students could write a descriptive text with good grammar and organization. In the first cycle, the students’ mean score was 59.68, it increased to 73.59 in the second cycle. In conclusion, the use of pictures improved the students’ writing of descriptive text. Keywords: Descriptive Text Writing, Pictures, Classroom Action Research

Abstract

This study aimed to design and develop animation videos of narrative texts as supplementary material for the tenth-grade students of SMA N 9 Pontianak. Narrative texts are commonly extensive, which causes students to experience boredom and struggle while learning materials. This study emphasizes the needs of students who lack interest when reading narrative texts in English. Students require a tool that will assist them in understanding the narrative texts. This issue may be solved through the development of an animated video. However, the study only focused on the design and development of the animation video. This development research involved four phases: identifying needs, exploring needs, contextual realization, and production of materials. The subject of this study is the tenth-grade students of SMA N 9 Pontianak and the English Teacher as the evaluator. Three folklores of West Kalimantan have been developed into animated videos in this study, such as Bujang Nadi and Dare Nandung, The Crying Stone, and The Greedy Fisherman. The final product of this research was conceptualized for a group discussion, allowing students to participate actively in class activities. The findings revealed that the developed animation videos of narrative texts meet 90 percent criteria for supplementary reading material by the evaluator. Considering that the video is available on YouTube, it can be utilized in various educational settings as it covers the topic.

Abstract

Online learning readiness has become crucial and needs to be considered to support E-learning from various perspectives. This article sought to discover the E-learning Readiness (ELR) factors from students’ perspectives during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Fifty-two seventh-grade Junior High School students in Indonesia participated in this study. This quantitative research used thirty-nine items in a questionnaire as the data collection instrument modified from Teddy and Swatman’s (2006) model known as E-learning Readiness (ELR) factors. The model utilized six factors, namely (1) students’ readiness, (2) teachers’ readiness, (3) internet access supports, (4) management supports, (5) school culture, and (6) E-learning tendencies. The findings indicated that the students’ readiness toward E-learning had an ELR score of 69%, which means they were ready for E-learning but needed slight improvement. The results showed students experienced difficulties (i.e., they were untrained in operating electronic devices, the devices lagged during the online teaching-learning process, and they had trouble following the English material due to the lack of instruction from English teachers) in implementing E-learning. The writer concluded that the student readiness towards E-learning was considered capable and ready but required some improvement from various aspects.

Abstract

This study presents the first comprehensive bibliometric analysis exploring the role of social media in English Language Teaching (SM-ELT) in Indonesia between 2012 and 2023. A total of 2,652 articles were initially retrieved from the Garuda database. After applying rigorous inclusion criteria—focusing on the Indonesian context, journal publications, and English-language articles—687 publications were analyzed. The findings reveal a steady increase in publication volume, with 79.5% of the studies published during the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily investigating students’ perceptions of social media in online learning. YouTube was identified as the most frequently studied platform (124 occurrences), followed by TikTok (78), with a noticeable decline in Facebook usage. The analysis also highlights the most cited journals (e.g., SELTICS with 282 citations) and prolific authors (e.g., Wahyudin with 300 citations), reflecting strong research networks within Indonesian institutions. Using VOSviewer, co-word and temporal analyses identified key research clusters, including writing skills, vocabulary acquisition, students’ perceptions, and pedagogical innovations such as blended and project-based learning. The study suggests that TikTok will continue to grow in relevance due to its engaging, short-form content and appeal to younger learners. However, it also cautions that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools may shift the focus away from social media platforms, offering potentially more effective and scalable solutions for language education. Therefore, future research should explore the intersections between AI and social media in ELT. This bibliometric study provides a foundation for scholars and educators to navigate evolving digital landscapes in English language education.
