Abstract

This research aims to determine the prevalence and severity rate of scabies on goats in Sub-District of Mempawah Hilir, Mempawah, West Kalimantan. The goat livestock used were not determined by age, sex, and breed. The number of goats researched was 100 goats. Scabies prevalence measurement was to divide the number of scabies goats by total goats, then multiplied by 100% and measurement of the severity rate of scabies goats with scoring with grades 1-3 (low), 4-6 (moderate), and 7-9 (heavy). The results obtained scabies prevalence rate of 38% with 38 positive samples from a population of 100 goats and the percentage of severity was 42%, moderate 24%, and 34% severe. This is due to weather factors in the area and the type of cage as well as inadequate maintenance management, thus making many cases of scabies attack goats.

Abstract

This study investigated the preventive effect of virgin coconut oil (VCO) on the epithelium thickness and the diameter of the seminiferous tubules induced by ethanol in mice (Mus musculus). This study used 20 male mice as the experimental animal which were divided into five groups with four mice in each group. Negative control (C-) was given 2% Tween and aquadest, while positive control (C+) was given 2% Tween and 33% ethanol. T1, T2, and T3 were respectively given 0.09, 0.19, and 0.37 mL/kg bw VCO and 33% ethanol (0.2 mL/kg bw). VCO was given orally for 39 days, and ethanol was given orally seven days later for 32 days. Ethanol was administered two hours after the VCO administration. Analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s range test on the epithelium thickness and the diameter of the seminiferous tubules showed significant differences (p <0.05) of C+ group from the other groups. Whereas, there was no significant difference (p >0.05) was found among C-, T1, T2 and T3 group. The result concluded that VCO could protect the testis of mice from the damage caused by ethanol.

Abstract

Background: Laserpuncture is a technology that uses short-wave rays to receptors (acupuncture points) to increase the capacity and efficiency of organs to increase the productivity of animals’ livestock. This can improve feed efficiency to help breeders maximize their beef bull fattening business. Purpose: This study was to test the potential of laserpuncture and probiotics on body weight gain and the digestibility of crude protein in Madura bull. Methods: This study used 12 Madura bulls with an age range of 2-2.5 years. The bulls were divided into two treatment groups. The P1 group shot laserpuncture at a dose of 0.5 joules. The P2 group received laserpuncture at a dose of 0.5 joules with 5 ml of probiotics administration in 1 liter of water. Data was taken by recording the weight gain of Madurese bulls every week and the results of crude protein digestibility testing. The resulting data is then analyzed using the T-test. Results: This study showed no significant difference between P1 and P2 in male Madura cattle’s body weight gain and crude protein digestibility. Conclusion: The combination of laserpuncture at the growth point and probiotic administration in feed did not cause a significant difference in weight gain or digestibility of crude protein in male Madurese bull.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the risk factors for dystocia in primiparous and pluriparous dams at the study site. Cases of dystocia, both maternal and fetal, were obtained as secondary data from records at the Situbondo Regency Animal Husbandry Service for year 2020 and 2021. Tracking on these secondary data was carried out to look for cows experienced dystocia and the owners’ names and addresses for interviews using a questionnaire worksheet. Interviews were conducted in February - May 2022 to obtain data on the maternal breed, age, feeding, fetal sex, and exercise frequency during pregnancy of the cows. Dystocia in the working area of the Besuki Animal Health Center in Sitobondo Regency in 2020 and 2021 occured in 50 cows which included primiparous (26%) and pluriparous (74%) cows. Breed, age, feed, and sex of the calves were not significantly different (p >0.05) between primiparous and pluriparous dams. However, the frequency of the exercises differed significantly (p <0.05) between primiparous and pluriparous dams. It could be concluded that the dystocia of cows in the study area was dominated by pluriparous parturition with exercises factor as the main cause.
