Abstract

Abstract

Scabious is a disease that often infests cats, originating from the family Sarcoptidae. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors that can affect the risk of scabious in cats. The study was evaluated at the Griya Satwa Clinic, Magetan in January-February 2021. The design of this study was a retrospective cohort study by taking secondary data during the 2020 period as study material. The data obtained were then entered into the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 for windows to analyze the association's relationship and increased risk by calculating the Chi-Square and Odds Ratio. The samples obtained were 76 cats infested with scabious. The analysis of the association of risk factors for scabious was breed (P = 0.428), age (P = 0.793), sex (P = 0.426). The results of the prevalence of scabious in cats from the study during January-February 2021 in the 2020 period were 9.5%, and the analysis of the association (Chi-Square) and the increased (Odds Ratio) of factors including breed, age, sex on the risk of scabious in cats were not significance / absent influence, The probability of error obtained is outside the tolerance set by the researcher, so the results are not significant (p>0,05).

Abstract

Stones, or uroliths, in the urinary tract cause a disorder called urolithiasis. Patients with urolithiasis may experience blockage and possibly mortality; therefore, prompt treatment is imperative. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of urolithiasis and its nutritional association in cats treated at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Universitas Airlangga during 2017-2019. Data was collected from the secondary resource from the medical report and the factor of feed nutrition involved fiber, protein, fat, and moisture. Data was analyzed using logistic regression to determine the influence of nutrition on the prevalence of urolithiasis in cats in the respective period. The findings indicated that in 2017, urolithiasis prevalence was 0,96%; in 2018, it was 5,55%; and in 2019, it was 0,91%. Meanwhile, it was revealed that the prevalence of urolithiasis was not significantly impacted by feed nutritional variables.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Apis dorsata honey on calcium levels in the mandibular bone of Wistar rats after ovariohysterectomy as an animal osteoporosis model for treating cases of osteoporosis. This study used 20 female rats, which were divided into five treatment groups with four replications. SHAM was the negative control group; OH was the ovariohysterectomized group without treatment as a positive control; the AD1, AD2, and AD3 groups were ovariohysterectomized rats with A. dorsata honey at doses of 1 g/kg bw, 2 g/kg bw, and 4 g/kg bw for 84 days. After 84 days of treatment, the left mandibular bones of the rats were collected, weighed, and stored in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Calcium levels were calculated using proximate analysis. The results showed a decrease in bone calcium levels in the ovariohysterectomy group, the highest results were in the SHAM group, and the lowest results were in the AD3 group. It can be concluded that the administration of A. dorsata honey could not maintain the calcium level of the mandibular bone in the ovariohysterectomized Wistar rats.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of oral administration of white guava fruit juice (Psidium guajava L.) on the spermatogenic cells of rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed orally to lead acetate. Twenty-five male rats (Rattus norvegicus) of the Wistar strain were randomly divided into five groups. Placebo group rats (P0) were given 0.5 mL distilled water twice every day orally at four-hour intervals. Groups T0, T1, T2, and T3 were given lead acetate 50 mg/kg bw orally, then respectively given distilled water, 100, 50 and 25% (v/v) white guava (Psidium guajava L.) fruit juice orally four hours later for 14 days. On day-15, the rats were sacrificed and their testicles were taken for histological preparations. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the number of spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids cells of rats in T0 group was lower (p <0.05) than in P0 group. Higher spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids cells (p <0.05) were found in the T1 group compared to the T0 group. However, the number of spermatogonia and spermatocytes in the T1 group was still lower than in the P0 group. The number of spermatids in the T3 group was almost the same (p >0.05) as in the P0 group. This study found that white guava pure juice without dilution was the best for maintaining the number of spermatids, but was unable to restore the number of spermatogonia and spermatocyte cells in rats exposed to lead acetate.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MLE) on the diameter and epithelium thickness of the seminiferous tubules of rats induced with gentamicin. This study used 25 male rats (Rattus norvegicus) aged 8-12 weeks with 150-200 grams body weight. Negative control group (C-) was injected with aquadest and given 0.5% Na-CMC orally, positive control group (C+) was induced with gentamicin injection of 5 mg/kg BW/day and given 0.5% Na-CMC orally, while groups T1, T2, and T3 were induced with gentamicin at the same dose and treated orally with MLE of 200, 316, 500 mg/kg BW/day. Analysis of variance showed significant differences and further analysis using Duncan Multiple Range Test showed difference in each group. The results showed that treatment with MLE of 500 mg/kg BW/day improved the diameter and epithelium thickness of the seminiferous tubules of rats injected with gentamicin. It could be concluded that MLE restored the diameter and epithelium thickness of the seminiferous tubules of rats induced with gentamicin.
