Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the intersection of Islamic economic principles and circular economy concepts in waste management through an innovative case study of the Palakka Health Hope Community Self-Help Group (KSM). Using a qualitative descriptive approach enhanced by NVivo 12 software analysis, we conducted in-depth interviews with ten key stakeholders, including government officials, community members, and KSM personnel. The research reveals how KSM successfully implements circular economy principles through three key strategies: waste prevention, recycling initiatives, and cross-sector collaboration. Our analysis demonstrates that KSM's approach aligns with the Islamic concept of maslahah (public benefit) through its integration of environmental stewardship with economic development. The study identifies three fundamental Islamic economic principles - al-Ihsan (excellence), al-Kifayah (sufficiency), and al-Mas'uliyah (responsibility) - that harmonize with circular economy practices. The findings suggest that this integrated approach not only transforms waste into valuable resources but also creates sustainable employment opportunities while adhering to Islamic economic principles. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on faith-based approaches to environmental sustainability and provides practical insights for implementing religiously aligned circular economy initiatives in waste management.

Abstract

Food is one of the crucial factors for the survival of birds. The interaction between habitats and birds, as well as the role of birds as environmental bioindicators, can be understood through feeding guilds by examining their responses to disturbances. This study aims to analyze the feeding guilds of bird communities on Pasoso Island. The data collection method used was the strip transect method. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis based on bird species composition according to their guilds. The results of this study show that 33 bird species were found on Pasoso Island, classified into 10 types of feeding guilds. Based on the number of species, the insect-eating guild had the highest number (9 species) compared to other guild categories. The coastal invertebrate-eating guild and raptor guild had the fewest species, with only one species recorded in each. Regarding the number of individuals, the insect-eating guild dominated with 42 individuals, followed by the fruit-eating guild with 29 individuals. On average, the fewest individuals were found in the coastal invertebrate-eating and raptor guilds, with only one individual in each.

Abstract

Ecotourism in conservation areas has significant potential to enhance local livelihoods while supporting ecosystem protection. Sustainability, however, strongly depends on institutional capacity. This study assesses the sustainability status of ecotourism in the Lombuyan Wildlife Sanctuary (KSM Lombuyan), Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi, by integrating ecological, economic, social, and institutional dimensions using the Rap_Ecotourism method, a multidisciplinary rapid appraisal adapted from the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) approach. Data were collected from October to December 2024 through interviews, ground checks, observations and documentation. The analysis results indicate that the overall sustainability index of the Lombuyan ecotourism area is 63.89%, classified as moderately sustainable. Among the four dimensions: the institutional dimension achieved the highest index (82.37%), followed by the social dimension (80.09%), while the ecological (55.18%) and economic (33.13%) dimensions were relatively lower. The results highlight that the traditional institution Pololuanto Lombuyan plays a crucial role in maintaining governance, enforcing local rules and facilitating collaboration between the community and the Central Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). This strong institutional framework compensates for economic limitations and supports ecological rehabilitation, particularly through community-led land restoration and monitoring. Our findings reveal that the sustainability of the Lombuyan ecotourism area is strongly influenced by resilience of local institutions and community participation. Strengthening these governance mechanisms offers a viable pathway for improving the long-term sustainability of ecotourism in conservation landscapes.

Abstract

Central Sulawesi is one of Indonesia’s oil palm producing provinces, with a plantation area of 60,913.77 ha distributed across nine districts, including Morowali Regency. Various allegations that oil palm plantations are associated with a decline in biodiversity, particularly herpetofauna, have encouraged research on herpetofauna and mammals. This study aimed to determine the diversity of herpetofauna species in oil palm plantations in Morowali Regency at Ungkaya Village. The research sites included old oil palm plantations, young oil palm plantations, and areas with High Conservation Value (HCV). The distance between the old oil palm plantations and the young oil palm plantations was approximately ±4 km, while the distance from the old oil palm plantations to the HCV area was ±3 km, and from the young oil palm plantations to the HCV area was ±5 km. Data collection was conducted using the Visual Encounter Survey (VES) method combined with a 1 km transect at each land cover age. Observations were carried out between 19:00 and 21:00 WITA. The results showed that changes in land cover within oil palm plantations did not cause a reduction in the number of herpetofauna species. A total of 13 reptile and amphibian species were recorded across all land cover types. The species diversity and richness indices indicated moderate values (H′ = 2.32 and R = 2.47), suggesting that oil palm plantations can function as habitats for herpetofauna. The species evenness index value of 0.91 indicates that herpetofauna are able to inhabit oil palm plantations across all land cover ages.

Abstract

Abstract. Muhtar I, Syahriati, Saleh R, Ahmad I, Ramlah S, Rosniati, Loppies JE. 2026. Comparative effect of ultrasound-assisted extraction configuration method on the physicochemical characteristics of tuna skin gelatin. Asian J Agric 10 (1): g100129. https://doi.org/10.13057/asianjagric/g100129. Gelatin is a biopolymer widely used in the food industry. The main challenge lies in the low yield and quality of gelatin produced through conventional extraction methods. This study aims to enhance the efficiency and quality of tuna (Thunnus albacares) skin gelatin by employing various extraction configurations. Tuna skin obtained from industrial processing by-products is then cleaned, cut uniformly, weighed, and used for pre-treatment and extraction. Tuna skin samples were obtained from processing by-products at PT. Nirvana Niaga Sejahtera from Indonesia in 2025. The extraction methods used include Water Bath Extraction (WBE), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction Pre-Alkali-Acetic Treatment (UAE-PRAA), and Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction Post-Acetic Treatment (UAE-PSAA). The UAE process was carried out at 175 W power, 25 kHz frequency, and 55°C for 60 minutes. The parameters analyzed included yield, composition (protein, moisture, and ash contents), pH, viscosity, gel strength, and structural characteristics, as determined by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The results showed that the UAE-PSAA method produced the highest yield (13.34±0.22%), significantly (p<0.05) greater than UAE-PRAA (6.60±0.15%) and WBE (5.01±0.12%). The highest protein content was found in WBE (81.39±0.02 g/100g) and UAE-PSAA (80.44±0.28 g/100g), while the lowest moisture content was observed in UAE-PSAA (5.16±0.17 g/100g), indicating better drying efficiency. The lowest ash content (0.62±0.02 g/100g) was also obtained from UAE-PSAA, reflecting higher extraction purity. Gel strength (164.32±0.04 g) and viscosity (10.00±0.05 cP) significantly (p<0.05) improved with the UAE-PSAA method. FTIR analysis revealed minor spectral shifts toward lower wavenumbers in the amide regions, indicating molecular rearrangements that improved the functional properties of the extracted gelatin. Overall, the UAE-PSAA configuration significantly (p<0.001) enhances yield, physicochemical quality, and molecular stability of tuna skin gelatin, demonstrating strong potential for scalable and sustainable industrial applications.
