Abstract

Maize has attracted the attention of local governments due to its high yield potential and economic prospects, but the strategic value of this commodity has not been specific to particular locations. Therefore, this study aimed to assess degraded land suitability and determine the regional comparative advantages for maize development in the Gorontalo sustainable agriculture areas. The suitability class was assessed using Automatic Land Evaluation System software, while comparative advantages were determined using input-output and regional analysis. The input-output analysis was based on maize farming data from interviews with 80 farmers. This study also employed location quotient, specialization index, and localization index analyses based on maize, rice, and soybean production data for 2014, 2016, and 2018. The results showed that land degradation caused by soil erosion was dominated by moderate, heavy, and very heavy categories. Most of the actual land suitability for maize was classified as marginal suitable (S3) but became very suitable (S1) and moderately suitable (S2) after the limiting factors were improved. Furthermore, maize was profitable for the land suitability classes of S1, S2, and S3, and the commodity was most concentrated in Mootilango District. Based on the results, land management recommendations followed a pattern of recommendation I > II > III > not recommended.

Abstract

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) can increase the levels of heavy metals in surface water and groundwater sources. This study was conducted to evaluate water quality in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Sampling was performed at three sites: a reservoir, an irrigation channel, and a well. The concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and mercury (Hg) were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The results indicated that Hg concentrations ranged from 0.00883 to 0.01493 mg/L (≈8.8–14.9× above the WHO guideline value of 0.001 mg/L), Mn concentrations ranged from 0.1309 to 0.543 mg/L (≈1.3–5.4× above the WHO guideline value of 0.1 mg/L), while Pb concentrations ranged from 0.0019 to 0.0048 mg/L, Cd concentrations ranged from 0.0002 to 0.0006 mg/L, and Fe concentrations ranged from 0.0728 to 0.101 mg/L, all of which were below the recommended threshold values for drinking water. The findings emphasize the importance of mitigation strategies based on mining governance, strengthening water safety plans, as well as interventions for household water treatment (adsorption/filtration) and risk communication.

Abstract

This study analyzes the socio-ecological dynamics of land management in Sari Tani Village, located within the buffer zone of the Nantu Boliohuto Wildlife Sanctuary (SM). Previous studies have focused more on the biophysical aspects of land degradation and the impacts of agricultural activities on conservation areas, but have been limited in integrating the analysis of inter-factor relationships, land management strategies by different social groups, and the role of local institutions within a comprehensive socio-ecological framework. The study was conducted over two months using a qualitative approach through field observations and in-depth interviews with 40 farmers (20 local and 20 transmigrants), village officials, middlemen, community leaders, agricultural extension workers, and forestry agencies. Data were analyzed using a Social-Ecological System (SES) framework to capture the interrelationships between resource systems, resource units, actors, and governance. The results indicate that the degradation of resource systems and resource units is influenced by differences in management strategies between local and transmigrant farmers. Local farmers tend to open new land due to monoculture practices that reduce soil fertility, while transmigrant farmers adopt a relatively more adaptive and conservative intercropping pattern. Weak governance, minimal institutional coordination, and the dominant role of middlemen contribute to reinforcing incentives for land expansion. Interactions between actors demonstrate that land-use decisions are driven more by short-term economic motives than by ecological sustainability considerations. This research emphasizes the importance of strengthening collaborative governance, implementing conservation agriculture practices, and integrating local knowledge into buffer zone management. These findings are expected to fill the research gap related to socio-ecological analysis in conservation areas and serve as a reference for policy formulation and the development of sustainable landscape management models in protected area buffer zones.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze farmers’ perceptions of sustainable lowland rice farming through the economic, social, and environmental dimensions, as well as to examine the relationship between farmers’ characteristics and their perceptions of sustainable farming. Methods: This is an empirical research article using a descriptive quantitative approach. The research was conducted in Motilango Village, Tilongkabila District, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province. Data were collected through interviews with 40 respondents selected purposively based on the criterion of having at least 15 years of farming experience. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, Likert scale scoring, and the Chi-Square (χ²) test. Results: The findings reveal that farmers’ perceptions of sustainable agriculture were categorized as fairly important for the economic (78.1%) and social (77.6%) dimensions, and important for the environmental dimension (89.5%), with an overall average of 81.73%. The factor significantly associated with farmers’ perceptions was the availability of agricultural information from sources other than extension services, particularly in the environmental dimension (p < 0.05). Novelty: This highlights that more diverse access to information, especially through social media and farmer groups, serves as a crucial determinant in shaping farmers’ perceptions of sustainability. Originality: Theoretically, this study enriches the literature on farmers’ perceptions by emphasizing the critical role of non-extension information sources in fostering sustainability awareness. Practically, the findings provide a foundation for designing policies, extension programs, and strengthening farmer groups to promote the adoption of locally based sustainable rice farming systems. Conclusion: This study contributes by offering a comprehensive understanding of farmers’ perceptions and the influencing factors, and by serving as a basis for strategies to strengthen local-based sustainable farming systems. Type of Paper: Empirical research article.

Abstract

Labuqu MSME is a food-processing enterprise based on organic butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata) located in East Bulontala Village, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of the 7P marketing mix, consisting of product, price, place, promotion, people, process, and physical evidence, as well as to formulate marketing strategies based on SWOT analysis. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, supported by in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and observations. Data were analyzed using the IFES, EFES, IE, and SWOT matrices. The findings indicate that the overall implementation of the 7P marketing mix has been fairly effective, with the main strengths being product diversification based on locally sourced functional raw materials and affordable pricing. However, the place and people dimensions remain weaknesses that require improvement, particularly in terms of limited accessibility to the business location and team coordination. The results of the SWOT analysis show that Labuqu's marketing strategy is positioned in Quadrant I, indicating that the enterprise possesses stronger internal strengths and greater external opportunities than its weaknesses and threats. Under these conditions, an aggressive strategy (Growth-Oriented Strategy) is recommended to support business growth and development.
