Abstract

Mankind activities bring influence towards the environment. This influence causes the damage of land surface. The activities indicate that human beings merely pursue the economic advantages, regardless of such impact. Economic activities and the rapid growth of population have put pressure on the nature balance which leads to the destruction of environment. It is necessary to notice that the land damage and the decline of environment quality will influence the lives of mankind. In order to minimize the impact of environment quality decline, the State Minister of Environment has issued a Law No.: 07 year of 2006 concerning the procedures for analyzing the standard criteria of land damage for Biomassa production. The government issued the law after considering the way of how to cope with environmental problems, particularly the land damage which harms a lot of farmers. Before determining the criteria of environment destruction, it is important to note the following things: (a) the implementation of policy which supports the people and the environment, (b) the implementation of the land damage criteria that has already been done, (c) the control and the law enforcement for the possible violations, (d) evaluation and sustainable system which is effective and efficient. Meanwhile, regarding the compilation of the standard and policy instrument, it is necessary to follow some steps namely: (a) standard establishment, (b) regulated standard, (c) choice of policy instrument.

Abstract

Sulawesi is a priceless island for biology conservation due to the fact that it has high level of endemic. This is not only the proud for Sulawesi, but also the huge responsibility to bear. Sulawesi is supposed to manage it so that it will benefit future life. Yet, the irresponsible deed has ended up in the rapid extinction of flora and fauna in Sulawesi and other islands in Indonesia. Since 1931 the endemic fauna in Sulawesi has been classified into scarce protected fauna. We have no rights to catch, hurt, kill, store, possess, keep, carry, and sell live or dead fauna. Although there have been a lot of activities for preserving the continuity of this wildlife and laws that rule the preservation, but extinction still threatens. Therefore, these laws must be implemented well. Besides, it is necessary to set a sustainable well organized effort that involve government and people in order to keep this wildlife since the variety of flora and fauna is part of our priceless natural resources.

Abstract

Pohuwato Regency is famous for its green line of mangrove which presents as a wide coastal ecosystem extending from Paguat subdistrict to West Popayato subdistrict. Mangrove forests in coastal areas of Torosiaje are one of the essential areas which play an important role as a buffer zone of Tomini Gulf. Human activities that go beyond the carrying capacity of the environment have led to a rapid decline of mangrove diversity. This study aimed to analyze the diversity of tree-staged mangrove species in Torosiaje coastal area, Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province. Diversity index was calculated using Shannon-Wiener formula. Based on the results, there were five tree-staged mangrove species, Xylocarpus granatum, Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops tagal, Avicenniamarina, and Brugueira gymnorrhizawith the individual total of 80. The value of diversity index was 1.093 in station I, 0.61 in station II, and 0.62 in station III. These numbers showed that the area of station I had a moderate level of diversity with the diversity index value of H′ > 1,0 – 1.5 while the areas of station II and III had a low diversity with the diversity index value of H′< 1,0. The value of mangrove biomass in Torosiaje is 27 ton / ha. This amount is equivalent to 13.36 ton / ha C (carbon content) with the largest carbon stock in the Rhizophora mucronata species is 8.71 ton / ha C, while the lowest carbon content in Ceriops tagal species is 0.13 ton / ha C. Mangrove in Torosiaje can absorb as much 49.03 ton / ha of carbon dioxide. These findings can be used as provisional data to help the management of mangrove forest as an attempt to control and reduce the ongoing mangrove destruction in Pohuwato Regency. Keywords: Carbon Stock, Diversity, Mangrove species, Torosiaje

Abstract

Bone Bolango ruas Jl. BJ. Habibie, Tapa-Kabila dan By Pass. Kota Gorontalo di ruas Jl. Pangeran Hidayat, HOS. Cokroaminoto dan HB. Jassin. Kab. Gorontalo Jl. Pohon Angsana (Pterocarpus indicus) berkisar 0.07% - 0.14% (pengurangan 7.2 dB - 13.3 dB). ABSTRACTThe existence of vegetation such as trees plays an important role in maintaining the stability of ecosystem and environment. The potential of trees is also known to create a pollution-free environment because trees can absorb the pollutants, lower the temperature, and also absorb the sounds through the stems, branches, and leaves. The purpose of this research is to figure out the effectiveness of type of trees towards the level of absorbing the noise emitted by motor vehicles in Gorontalo Province. This research was conducted in Bone Bolango District on a road section of BJ. Habibie Street, Tapa-Kabila Street and a bypass. In Gorontalo City, the location of the research was in Pangeran Hidayat Street, HOS. Cokroaminoto Street and HB. Jassin Street. In Gorontalo District, the research was located in Sama’un Pulubuhu Street, Sudirman Street, and Trans Sulawesi. The noise level is measured by using sound level meter. The level of noise was measured on 1 meter in front of the trees, on the first and fifth meters behind the trees, and 1.5 meters above the ground. The data of the trees were collected from a survey method and note-taking on the thickness of the stem, height of the bottom stem, height of the canopy, area of the canopy, and the distance between plants. The measurement results showed that the effectiveness of sound absorption by Rain Tree (Samanea saman) is around 0.11% - 0.17% (7.3 dB - 16 dB subtraction); Angsana Tree (Pterocarpus indicus) around 0.07% - 0.14% (7.2 dB - 13.3 dB subtraction); Mahogany Tree (Swietenia mahagoni) as big as 0.06% - 0.16% (5.2 dB - 13.5 dB subtraction); and Kalijawa Tree (Lannea coromandelica) as big as 0.08% - 0.15.% (6.3 dB – 11.9 dB subtraction). Based on the spacing density of the plants, area of the canopy, height of tree and the stem diameter, each type of tree has different potential in absorbing sound. Rain tree has is more effective than Angsana, Mahogany, and Kalijawa Trees. This is because Rain Tree has a big area of canopy and tight leaf arrangement so that it can absorb the sound wave produced by motor vehicles.
