Abstract

Background: Industrial Work Placement (PKL) is a mandatory course for Vocational High School (SMK) students involving practical activities in relevant industries. A significant gap persists between the competencies students have mastered and the professional standards required by the automotive industry. Objective: This study aims to identify the competency standards required for automotive engineering (TKRO) students to perform effectively during industrial work placement, in accordance with automotive industry requirements. Methodology: This research employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with nine purposively selected automotive workshop managers in Surakarta, Indonesia. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). Findings: To successfully execute tasks in the automotive industry, internship students must possess a triad of competencies: (1) general competencies (soft skills) including occupational health and safety, industrial culture, and work environment maintenance; (2) specific/technical competencies (hard skills) covering inspection and maintenance of engines, power transmission, electrical, and body electrical systems; and (3) automotive-specific supporting competencies related to digital literacy and modern automotive technology. Practical Implications: The findings provide a concrete reference for vocational curriculum design and student preparation before industrial placement, particularly in the context of Indonesia’s automotive vocational education

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Internship activities can serve as a reference for the skills vocational education institutions require to produce competent graduates. By analyzing internship activities by International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) skill level, the aim is to create a mapping of automotive skills. Methodology: A qualitative approach was employed to analyze 15 internship documents, including activity notes and reports validated by industry experts. The interview participants, selected using purposive sampling, consisted of 5 vocational internship supervisors. The analysis process included data collection, reduction, coding, data triangulation, and interpretation, using NVivo 12. Main Findings: The research results indicate that the foundational competencies in automotive include ISCO 1 skills in terms of work ability and the maturity of soft skills related to the job. The demand for hard skills is driven by jobs equivalent to ISCO skill levels 2; however, higher-level skills, namely ISCO levels 3 and 4, are also required for jobs involving advanced thinking and decision-making in the automotive after-sales industry. Document analysis results reveal the types of skills vocational education institutions can prepare students to engage with, including simulation-based learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning, and work-based learning. Novelty/Originality of this study: Ultimately, this study demonstrates sustainable skill mapping based on job types and ISCO skill levels at low cost through systematic, integrative steps, leveraging the potential of annual industrial internship activities and serving as a reference for other professional competencies.

Abstract

The duration of the internship program in Indonesia has changed, from 3 months to 6 months. Increasing the duration of the internship program requires a supportive monitoring model, considering the problem of student attendance and the limited costs of monitoring the internship program. The AppSheet platform is a solution that needs to be developed and implemented as a support tool for student monitoring. The research method uses a qualitative phenomenological, to find out the results of implementing the AppSheet application as an online attendance and recap of the attendance of automotive engineering students at SMK N 5 Surakarta during the internship program from April 1 to September 30, 2023. Observation Interview data and documentation are presented in text form descriptive narrative, through interactive analysis techniques. As a result, the AppSheet application helps teachers monitor student attendance during industrial work practices, makes it easier to detect student absences, and becomes the basis for providing personal and group guidance for students who experience problems during the internship program.

Abstract

The use of a steam carburetor is one way to reduce exhaust gas emissions where it works by mixing fuel and air in the room with an evaporation process so that the air and fuel mixture is more homogeneous. This study aims to see (1) the effect of using a steam carburetor on exhaust gases on a Supra X motorcycle; (2) the effect of using variations in exhaust gas emissions on the Supra X motorcycle; (3) the effect of using steam carburetors and fuel variations on the exhaust emissions of the Supra X motorbike. This research is a research, quantitative, descriptive, comparative, with experimental methods. The research used the 2x2 method which consists of independent variables using steam and conventional carburetors as well as variations of pertalite (RON 90) and pertamax (RON92) fuel. Exhaust gas emission testing is guided by the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) with three repetitions, for 20 seconds times the test The results of the study are as follows: First, the use of a steam carburetor produces lower exhaust emissions compared to conventional carburetors on a 100cc Supra X motorcycle. Second, pertalite fuel (RON 90) produces lower exhaust emissions compared to Pertamax fuel (RON 92). Third, the effect of using the type of carburetor and the type of fuel that produces the lowest exhaust emission, namely the steam carburetor using the combined splash and bubbling method with pertalite fuel with an average of 0.52% CO and 273.67ppm HC.
