Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out whether there is an influence of the use of problem and video based learning models on student interest and learning outcomes. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 14 Medan and the research population was all class. In the research, the pretest score was 34.85 and the posttest score was 80.28. Normality and homogeneity tests were carried out and the results showed normal distribution. In hypothesis testing using One Sample T-Test, a Sig.(2-Tailed) value of 0.002 was obtained. Therefore, a value of 0.002< α (0.05) means that the hypothesis is accepted, which shows that there is an influence of the use of problem-based learning models and videos on student learning outcomes in chemical bonding material. Meanwhile, for the results of student interest in learning, the average score obtained was 76.06 in the high category. This shows that there is an influence of the use of problem-based learning models and videos on students' learning interest in chemical bonding material.

Abstract

This study aims to develop teaching materials based on the IBL STEM model using the Wordwall application to improve students' critical thinking skills. The development model used refers to the ADDIE model with 30 students of the Chemistry Education Study Program, UNIMED as research subjects. The research instrument used an expert validation sheet and a test of students' critical thinking skills on stoichiometry material as many as 25 questions in the form of multiple choices. The results of the study indicate that teaching materials based on the IBL STEM model using the Wordwall application are feasible and effective in improving students' critical thinking skills in Stoichiometry learning. The feasibility is met qualitatively based on the assessment of material expert validators with an average total score of 4.36 (valid) and the assessment of media expert validators with an average total score of 4.32 (valid). Effectiveness is met based on the results of product implementation and evaluation results and is proven by statistical hypothesis testing (p < 0.05) with an average achievement of increasing students' critical thinking skills of 40.067 ± 9.318.

Abstract

An effective learning model and appropriate media are essential to optimize students’ understanding and learning outcomes. This study aims to find out if there are differences in student learning results when using the Problem-Based Learning STEM model with Quizizz media compared to Mentimeter media. This study uses a quantitative method with an experimental design and a sample selected through random sampling, consisting of two experimental groups taught using the STEM-based Problem-Based Learning model with different media, namely Quizizz and Mentimeter. The research instrument is a validated multiple-choice learning outcome test, and the data are analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, as well as hypothesis testing with paired sample t-test andindependent t-test. The paired sample t-test results showed a significant improvement in learning outcomes before and after the treatment in both classes (significance 0.000 ≤ 0.05), while the independent t-test results indicated a significant difference in learning outcomes between the two experimental classes (significance 0.000 ≤ 0.05). The implementation of the STEM-based ProblemBased Learning model with the help of digital learning media (Quizizz and Mentimeter) is effective in improving students' learning outcomes on stoichiometry material; however, Quizizz proved to be superior to Mentimeter in this study.

Abstract

Tobacco smoking is known to have adverse health effects, including an increased risk of cancer , cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders. These health risks are largely attributed to the presence of toxic compounds in tobacco smoke, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cyanide, both of which are carcinogenic. One potential method to mitigate these harmful effects is by using adsorbent materials, such as polyurethane foam, as smoke filters. This study aims to: (1) analyze the characteristics of polyurethane foam modified with aluminum metal, (2) evaluate the adsorption capability of the material against carcinogenic compounds in cigarette smoke using GC-MS analysis, and (3) determine the optimal adsorbent composition for maximum foam performance. Material characterization was conducted using FTIR to identify functional groups, swelling degree tests to assess water absorption capacity, SEM-EDX to examine surface morphology and aluminum distribution, and GC-MS to identify the carcinogenic compounds adsorbed. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of N-H, C-H, C=O, and C-C functional groups in the polyurethane structure. The swelling degree test showed a positive result, indicating good water absorption ability. SEM-EDX analysis demonstrated that aluminum particles were successfully distributed within the foam’s pores, resulting in smaller pore sizes. Furthermore, GC-MS results confirmed the adsorption of several carcinogenic compounds, including pyridine, eugenol, and benzenamine. These findings suggest that aluminum-modified polyurethane foam has the potential to serve as an effective filtering material to reduce exposure to toxic compounds in tobacco smoke.

Abstract

The methyl eugenol formic ester is the intermediate formation of the 1-(3,4-dimethoxy phenyl)-2-amino-2-cyano propane compound, a hypertension drug. This study aimed to find the value of the reaction order and study the mechanism of an addition reaction of methyl eugenol with formic acid to produce the methyl eugenol formic ester. Gas chromatography analysis of the residual methyl eugenol determines the reaction order. There are two dominant products in the synthesis of methyl eugenol formic ester, resulting in the formation reaction of methyl eugenol formic predictable in a two-way reaction mechanism. The determination of the energy of the reactants, products, and transition compounds in the formation reaction of methyl eugenol formic ester compound prescribed through computational studies using NWChem 6.0 and visualization using Jmol. The results of the analysis of the data obtained several conclusions: The value of the reaction ordered for methyl eugenol with formic acid is the first order. Based on the computational result shows that the enthalpy change for the reaction product is ΔH(1) = -47,810 KJ/mol and ΔH(2) = -60,545 KJ/mol. The activation energy for both transition compounds is Ea(1) = 163,1937 KJ/mol and Ea(2) = 370,3477 KJ/mol. This fact indicates that the formation of methyl eugenol formic ester compound using the method (1) was more likely than (2). The prediction is based on the determination of Ea with the computational chemistry following the experimental result, which shows the product of (1) more than the product of (2).

Abstract

Thinking creatively is a crucial higher-order skill that students must acquire when they graduate from university. This necessitates lecturers designing and developing learning processes that actively engage students while fostering their creative thinking abilities. This study aims to develop and validate general chemistry teaching materials on organic compounds and reactions using the PjBL-STEM model and evaluate their effectiveness in improving students' creative thinking skills. The study employed the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model. The teaching materials were designed as comprehensive books that adhered to the PjBL-STEM framework. Effectiveness was measured by analyzing improvements in students’ creative thinking abilities through quantitative testing. The results demonstrate that the PjBL-STEM-based teaching materials are valid and feasible for implementation. Their effectiveness in enhancing students' creative thinking abilities was statistically significant (t-count = 32.488; p = 0.000), with an average improvement of 42.725 ± 8.317. The development of PjBL-STEM-based teaching materials offers a valuable tool for chemistry education, effectively promoting creative thinking skills among students. This approach provides a practical framework for lecturers to design innovative, student-centered learning strategies.
