Abstract

Abstract

Abstract        In generative grammar, especially in the X-bar theory, all syntactic constructions are claimed to be endocentric.  This principle enforces a sentence or a clause to be treated as an inflectional phrase, with the inflectional category as the head. This principle has been attested for many languages and it has become a general rule. However, some languages like Javanese may behave differently from languages having the inflection system like English. This paper aims to discuss whether Javanese has Inflectional phrase or not. The data used in this study was taken from a Javanese magazine Panjebar Semangat, collected using an observation technique. The result of the analysis shows that Javanese lexicons expressing tense, aspect, and modals belong to inflections and they have the maximal projection as Inflectional Phrase.  Keywords: inflectional phrase, Javanese, X-bar theory

Abstract

Indonesian, Javanese and Sundanese belong to the same language family, the Austronesian languages. The three languages have some similarities, one of which is the occurrence of reduplication. This paper aims to discuss full reduplication in the three languages, especially on the verbs. The objectives of this paper are to explain the semantic functions of full reduplication, and to present the process of deriving full reduplication in the three languages. In this case, the theory of distributed reduplication was applied in the analysis. The data used in the study were taken from books and research reports. In addition, I also employed a native speaker of  Sundanese to check the data on Sundanese. In this case, I used the interview method with an elicitation technique. The result of the analysis shows that Indonesian and Javanese have full reduplication with the notion of repetition, reciprocal, uncertainty of goal, and intensifier. Meanwhile, Sundanese, has full reduplication with the notion of intensifier and reciprocal. The process of full reduplication in the three language is different. In Indonesian, reduplicated forms with a reciprocal notion are composed of three morphemes, while in Javanese and Sundanese this type of reduplication is composed of two morphemes. Keywords: full reduplication, Indonesian, Javanese, Sundanese, distributed reduplication

Abstract

This research aims to describe the pattern of Arabic simple sentences attached by adverb of time and the distribution of the adverb of time in Arabic simple sentences. The research data are in the form of a simple sentence, which contains adverb of time from a paper in the book Al-Arabiyah Baina Yadaik Volume 4a by Al-Fauzan, et al. (2014). The data collection was carried out using the observation method. The analysis of adverb of time in Arabic simple sentence was done by a tree diagram with the guidelines proposed by Chomsky (2002). The results showed that the adverb of time is inherent in verbs and was only found in the original verb and not a derivational verb. In addition, the sentence patterns of Arabic simple sentence attached by adverb of time consist of PS, SP, SPO, and PSO. The researchers also found the distribution of adverbs of time inside the predicate, behind the object, in front of the predicate, and behind the subject.

Abstract

The phonological process shows the changing of sounds and the rules that govern the work. These sound changes can occur in vowels, consonants, and even semivowels. This study focuses on the sound changes that occur in semivowels [y] and [w], especially in Indonesian vocabularies. This study aimed to investigate the quantity of diphthong diversity in Bahasa Indonesia, as the basis for examining the role and patterns of [y] and [w] insertion, as well as when [y] and [w] cannot be inserted into some words in Bahasa Indonesia. This study also emphasizes the location where [y] and [w] are inserted by using a spectrogram. The data collection used the observation method. The list of data was taken from Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI) and pronounced by an Indonesian native speaker. The spoken data are transcribed into the phonetic form using the note-taking technique. The analysis was done through the syllabic structural process based on Schane. The results present that [y] is inserted between the diphthongs ia, iu, ie, io, ea, and eo. Then, [w] is inserted between the diphthongs ua, ui, ue, uo, and oa, and the insertion of [y] and [w] does not appear when they meet with the diphthongs ai, au, ae, ao, ei, eu, oi, ou oe. The spectrograms in this study are used to see and present the insertion of [y] and [w].

Abstract

Abstract. Streaming platforms, such as Netflix, gained their popularity significantly during the pandemic prominently since people avoid watching films in theatres. Thus, the study of translation, specifically subtitling, is necessary since there will be more films with different languages to be produced and streamed by people from different countries. This research aims to study and interpret the subtitling strategies used on Netflix, specifically in “To All the Boys: Always and Forever” movie. Employing a qualitative library research method and document analysis for the data collecting technique, this research unveils the subtitling strategies as well as the subtitle quality of Lara Jean’s utterances in “To All the Boys: Always and Forever” film on Netflix. The data source is chosen since the film is considered popular as it is the adaptation of the best-selling novel “Always and Forever, Lara Jean.” From the 428 utterances, it is discovered that there are seven strategies applied; respectively paraphrase, transfer, condensation, deletion, expansion, imitation, and transcription. Meanwhile, three strategies that are not found are decimation, dislocation, and resignation. Paraphrase is the most frequently applied strategy since many utterances require localization and alteration to become clearer for the Indonesian audience. On the other hand, decimation, dislocation, and resignation are not used respectively due to the rate of the film, translatable utterances, and soundtracks that are not translated. Keywords: film; netflix; subtitling strategies; subtitling quality; translationAbstrak. Layanan streaming, seperti Netflix, meraih popularitas secara signifikan selama pandemi karena masyarakat menghindari menonton film langsung di bioskop. Oleh karena itu, penelitian mengenai terjemahan, khususnya subtitling, diperlukan karena film dalam bahasa asing akan semakin banyak diproduksi dan ditonton oleh orang-orang dari berbagai negara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji dan memaknai strategi subtitling yang digunakan oleh Netflix, khususnya pada film “To All the Boys: Always and Forever.”
