Abstract

Pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools) have followed changes in the society and experienced modernization. This is demonstrated by the emergence of pesantrens in Indonesia that are moved to link education based on Islamic values with environmental issues. This research intends to discuss the role of pesantren as religious institutions as well as education in building awareness of the environment. The approach used in this research is qualitative with the phenomenological method. Data in this research were obtained through semi-structured interviews and field observations which were then analyzed through coding. The results of this research show that there is a strong connection between verses in the Koran and environmental conservation. Apart from that, pesantren leader has an important role in formulating the basic values that become the organizational culture. Communication built between pesantren owner, teachers and students is fundamental in socializing organizational values. The process of conveying messages carried out by the Misykat Al-Anwar Pesantren to its students is carried out through several stages, namely anticipatory socialization, encounter socialization, and metamorphosis socialization. These stages also show that the socialization process carried out at the Misykat Al-Anwar Pesantren regarding the integration of Islamic values in building awareness of the environment is highly useful.

Abstract

Murals, as a form of street art, are increasingly used not only to enhance urban aesthetics but also to convey social criticism. In Indonesia, this trend has gained momentum, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, when murals have become a medium for dissent against government policies, figures, and institutions. This study aims to analyze how artists use murals to express social criticism towards the government and to understand the interpretative process involved in their message delivery. Utilizing Social Construction theory, this research examines how artists construct and convey their messages through murals. The study adopts a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, focusing on the lived experiences of the artists to gain insights into how they perceive and represent social realities. The findings reveal that mural creation is a subjective process, deeply influenced by the artists' understanding of social issues. Artists navigate through various stages of construction, incorporating words, symbols, and images to reflect their perspectives on societal concerns. The messages embedded in these murals are often open to multiple interpretations, reflecting the diverse ways in which social criticism can be communicated. This study highlights the role of murals as a dynamic form of protest and expression, revealing the complex interplay between artistic representation and social critique. The research underscores the importance of considering artists' experiences and perspectives to fully appreciate the impact and significance of their work in the context of social and political commentary. Abstract

This research aims to uncover the symbolic meaning and social function of the Gama' traditional wedding ritual of the Mongondow tribe. The Gama' tradition is the final stage of a series of wedding rituals that must be performed, encompassing 13 stages rich in symbolism and cultural values. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods to gain an in-depth understanding of this ritual through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and literature review. The main informants consist of the head of the cultural heritage institution, traditional elders, and community members involved in the execution of the traditional ceremony. The results show that each stage in the Gama' tradition has symbolic meaning reflecting the ancestral, religious, moral, social, and ethical values of the Mongondow community. The study also found that despite the influence of modernization causing changes in the ritual's execution, the essence and symbolic meaning of the Gama' tradition are maintained. Gama' plays a crucial role in strengthening the cultural identity and social bonds of the Mongondow community, providing guidance for the younger generation in understanding and preserving their cultural heritage.

The phenomenon of contract marriages often found in Cipanas Village, Bogor is interesting because it is one of the ways chosen by people to quickly improve their welfare. It’s considered to have an impact on welfare improvement and poverty alleviation in rural communities. Therefore, this study aims to describe how the dynamics of contract marriages based on transactional communication can provide a sense of what is welfare for the people of Cipanas Village. This study applies a qualitative approach supported by the use of the phenomenological method. Data collection was carried out using semi-structured interviews and observations carried out in the field. Data validity is carried out through internal validity and as a measuring tool by checking the consistency of answers given through the same question to ther informants. The results of this study indicate that transactional communication becomes a tool in the verbal negotiation process until an agreement is formed between the parties involved in the practice of contract marriages. This agreement on exchange values that has been approved is considered a safety valve in the economic dimension, especially in creating improvements in people's living standards. The society views the practice of contract marriages as legal and not in violation of religious regulations. The contribution of this research is expected to be a reference for the government and further researchers who will be conducting further studies related to the phenomenon of contract marriages.

Abstract

Singkawang, known as the “Hong Kong of Borneo,” is one of the most tolerant cities in Indonesia, where the Chinese ethnic group, with its distinctive cultural values, is the dominant cultural group in the city. With a population originating from diverse cultural backgrounds, interactions through inter-ethnic marriages, especially between Chinese, Dayak, and Malay ethnic groups, produce various dynamics of acculturation. This study aims to analyze the communication dynamics of cultural value acculturation in inter-ethnic marriages involving Chinese, Dayak, or Malay (Tidayu) ethnic groups in Singkawang. Using a phenomenological approach, this study explores the experiences of married Tidayu couples to understand how cultural differences are harmonized, shared identities are built, and family and social traditions are integrated. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and literature review. The results of the study show that through inter-ethnic marriages Tidayu, Singkawang society has developed to be more inclusive by accepting each other. In the established dynamics of communication, it is important to maintain customs as part of efforts to adapt and acculturate culture. Communication dynamics cannot be separated from the worldview of the individuals involved. The results of this study are expected to have practical benefits in strengthening unity in the multicultural landscape of Singkawang, especially when facing the challenges of ethnic diversity.
