Abstract

Indonesia's rapid economic growth has increased energy demands, necessitating a robust energy security strategy. In this context, natural gas is crucial as a transitional energy source for achieving net-zero emissions. Despite the abundance of natural gas reserves in the country, the government foresees a potential imbalance between demand and supply, posing risks of disruptions in the energy sector. To address these challenges, this study focuses on formulating a business strategy for Kangean Energy Indonesia Ltd. (KEI) over the next five years, focusing on ensuring sustainable gas deliverability through applying qualitative scenario planning. Scenario planning is a valuable analytical tool to identify and address the uncertainties that may impact the Indonesian gas industry. This methodological approach builds a strong foundation for developing effective business strategies.  The research draws upon both primary and secondary data sources. Based on a comprehensive stakeholder mapping, primary data is acquired through interviews with eight carefully selected stakeholders. Through these interviews, the study highlights two critical uncertainties that significantly influence the gas industry: supply and infrastructure. The study culminates in creating a comprehensive scenario framework complemented by detailed narratives exploring plausible future developments. Furthermore, the research delves into the implications and options for alternative strategies in light of these scenarios. Additionally, identifying early warning signals becomes instrumental in KEI's agile response to potential changes in the industry landscape. Through this approach, KEI can enhance its preparedness to address future challenges, ensuring sustained success in the dynamic and ever-evolving gas deliverability business. As Indonesia's energy landscape continues to evolve, KEI's commitment to scenario planning will be instrumental in securing the nation's stable and prosperous energy future

Abstract

Indonesia's heavy reliance on coal for electricity generation poses significant environmental challenges, necessitating a transition toward more sustainable energy sources. Biomass co-firing, which involves blending biomass with coal in existing power plants, offers a practical solution  to  reduce  carbon  emissions  while  utilizing  the  country's  abundant  biomass resources. However, its large-scale implementation is influenced by multiple interdependent factors, including fuel availability, economic feasibility, technological readiness, and policy support. The study utilizes qualitative data analysis which is collected on interview sessions with   energy   and   electricity   stakeholders,   including   government,   national   electricity producers,  and  biomass  suppliers.  The study  found  44  factors  influence  the  system  of biomass co-firing for  electricity,  which  derived from seven categories, including biomass related  factors,  economic  feasibility,  government,  institutional  characteristics,  technical practicality, and new renewable energy/bioenergy. The interrelationships within the factors were analyzed using causal loop diagrams, which include three major drivers, which are technical  practicality,  institutional  characteristic,  and  economic  feasibility. The  findings emphasize  the  need  for  coordinated  policies,  investment  in  biomass  supply  chains,  and stakeholder collaboration to enhance co-firing effectiveness. This study contributes to the understanding   of   biomass   integration   in   the   electricity   sector   and   offers   strategic recommendations to accelerate Indonesia’s sustainable energytransition

Abstract

Despite the growing urgency, discussions about the diffusion of this technology are still challenging to identify and understand. This study attempts to investigate further the intention of blockchain adoption in society. This study used a survey strategy and was analysed using structural equation modelling. Furthermore, this study collected 96 respondents using a purposive sampling technique. The findings show that a few hypotheses diverged from the developed model. Blockchain adoption is suitable for today's problems and has a relative advantage over other technologies in influencing individual perceptions. However, the limited knowledge of society makes blockchain adoption only focused on a particular context. The role of the social environment is more visible in its significance on the intention to adopt blockchain technology along with individual perceptions. The research model attempted to extend the existing technology adoption behaviour theory widely used to understand technological adoption.

Abstract

This paper develops a comprehensive conceptual framework aimed at integrating and synergizing Sectoral State-Owned Holdings (SOHs) to significantly enhance their competitiveness and sustainability. The framework is designed to fill critical gaps in the existing literature by addressing key areas, such as value creation, innovation, and strategic alignment, which are essential for the long-term success of SOHs. One of the primary contributions of this framework is its emphasis on the incorporation of non-economic factors, such as customer satisfaction, community engagement, and environmental stewardship, which are increasingly recognized as vital components of sustainable business practices. The framework also delves into the nuanced impact of government intervention on the performance and strategic orientation of SOHs, exploring how state policies and regulations can either enable or hinder their growth and competitive positioning. By providing a structured approach, this framework enables SOHs to leverage their unique resources and capabilities more effectively, ensuring that they achieve sustainable competitive advantages. Furthermore, the framework underscores the importance of aligning SOH strategies with national economic and social objectives, thereby positioning these entities not only as key drivers of economic growth but also as contributors to broader societal well-being. Ultimately, this paper offers a valuable tool for policymakers, managers, and researchers interested in optimizing the performance and strategic impact of SOHs in a dynamic global economy.

Abstract

Complying with local content regulations in the upstream oil and gas industry presents a significant challenge. These regulations aim to enhance local capability, and the industry's yearly transaction value greatly impacts the local industry, necessitating the use of local products. However, despite requiring high technology, this industry mostly relies on imported products. To address this challenge, our research employs a systematic approach that combines scenario planning with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis. Our primary goal is to develop a comprehensive framework that empowers organizations to optimize their business strategies within the context of localization projects. By integrating scenario planning, which allows for the exploration of diverse future scenarios, with AHP analysis, which offers a structured analytical foundation for evaluating and selecting strategies, our research equips decision-makers with a powerful toolset. Through extensive case studies and meticulous analysis, our research sheds light on the nuanced decision-making processes and strategic adaptations that can be achieved through the synergy of scenario planning and AHP analysis in the domain of localization projects. Our findings and insights provide practical guidance to decision-makers grappling with the complexities of local content compliance and the long-term sustainability of business strategies.

Abstract

This study explores the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) strategies of three leading Indonesian multinational enterprises (MNEs)—Indofood, Adaro, and Kalbe—from the food and beverage, mining, and pharmaceutical industries. Using a thematic analysis, the research identifies three key themes shaping their internationalization strategies: Strategic Global Expansion, Operational Integration and Synergy, and Institutional and External Market Dynamics. The findings highlight how these firms leverage global expansion to diversify markets and enhance competitiveness, employ operational integration to achieve synergies and control, and adapt to institutional and regulatory challenges to mitigate risks and maintain resilience. Classical theories such as the OLI Paradigm, Internalization Theory, and Resource-Based View (RBV) provide a foundation for understanding these strategies, while contemporary frameworks like the Linkage-Leverage-Learning (LLL) Framework and Springboard Theory offer nuanced insights into the unique dynamics of emerging market multinationals (EMNEs). This study underscores the critical role of institutional alignment, regulatory compliance, and market adaptability in ensuring successful FDI outcomes. It contributes to the literature by advancing theoretical frameworks to better capture the complexities of FDI from emerging economies and offers practical recommendations for policymakers and practitioners aiming to enhance the global competitiveness of EMNEs.
