Abstract

This study aims to obtain an overview of the paradigm tendencies owned and practiced by school counselors in Indonesia. The study involved 233 school counselors in Indonesia on Sumatra, Java, and Bali islands. The research instrument reveals the counseling model that respondents use in providing counseling services (individual/group) and the reasons for its use. Statistics such as frequencies and percentages are used for quantitative data analysis. Qualitative data for reasons for specific counseling models were analyzed using Miles and Huberman data analysis. The results of this study show that school counselors most widely use behavior counseling models because they are effective in overcoming student behavior problems. This approach suits general needs and concerns and is easily understood with its techniques. The rational-emotive behavior therapy counseling model was chosen because it helps change mindsets to be more realistic and mature. This technique follows the needs and problems that arise and the development of adolescents who often act without consideration. Referring to Cotton's opinion, both models are counseling models that fall into the psychological paradigm. The tendency of school counselors to use psychological paradigms may be due to the psychology-focused counselor education curriculum, lack of resources or knowledge of other paradigms, and limitations of the school environment that encourage the use of traditional psychological approaches. School counselors must work with other school staff to integrate counseling approaches into the school program, which is essential. Professional organizations are expected to encourage training in behavioral counseling and REBT, supporting students' holistic education that includes academic, social, and emotional aspects.

Abstract

This study investigates student behavior in utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to address academic and personal challenges, as well as the subsequent implications for guidance and counseling services within Islamic higher education contexts. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing literature reviews and semi-structured interviews conducted with four counselors and six students from an Islamic higher education institution in Bengkulu. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students predominantly use AI tools to efficiently manage academic tasks, such as organizing schedules and accessing information. However, excessive dependence on AI has been observed to adversely affect students' critical thinking abilities, as they often unquestioningly accept instantaneous solutions provided by these technologies without deeper reflection or critical assessment. Additionally, counselors identified significant challenges in integrating AI technologies with a humanistic and spiritually grounded counseling approach rooted in Islamic values, particularly concerning issues of data privacy, confidentiality, and ethical use of technology. The results of this study emphasize the necessity of developing a balanced strategy that combines the advantages of AI with robust human interaction in counseling practices. Consequently, it is recommended that Islamic higher education institutions enhance counselor training in ethical AI utilization, while concurrently supporting students in cultivating critical thinking capacities and moral consciousness aligned with Islamic ethical frameworks. Future research should consider employing quantitative methodologies to statistically assess AI's impact on students' academic and personal development and to broaden the exploration of effective integration between technological advancements and Islamic educational values.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine family resilience based on the belief system in families with Javanese and Sundanese cultural backgrounds. The method used in this study is a qualitative phenomenological method. Phenomenological studies are used to understand phenomena at the level of subjective reality. Respondents in this study were five families with Javanese ethnic background domiciled in Kebumen and Banyumas regencies, Central Java and three families with Sundanese cultural background domiciled in Pangandaran and Sumedang regencies, West Java. The data collection method using in-depth interviews based on the concept of family resilience from Walsh describes three aspects of the belief system. The research data was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions with the help of qualitative data analysis software, namely Nvivo 12 Plus. The results show that families with Javanese and Sundanese backgrounds have a belief system in facing life’s trials which are manifested in the ability to interpret life’s difficulties, have a positive outlook, and the value of religiosity. The results of this study can be used as part of an assessment in schools and information on family resilience can be used as a counselor’s consideration in implementing family counseling and multicultural counseling services.

Abstract

Tobacco use among adolescents remains a serious public health concern, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a school-based smoking cessation program on students' knowledge, attitudes, and smoking behavior in Gresik. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post test was applied to 142 high school students, divided into experimental and control groups. The intervention included educational sessions, discussions, and practical tools for quitting smoking. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test, revealing significant improvements across all measured variables: knowledge (p = 0.000), attitudes (p = 0.000), and smoking behavior (p = 0.000). The findings demonstrate the program’s effectiveness in increasing awareness about the dangers of smoking, promoting negative attitudes toward smoking, and reducing cigarette consumption among participants. These results indicate the potential of school-based interventions to produce meaningful behavioral change in adolescents. The study contributes to public health knowledge by highlighting the importance of targeted, structured programs in reducing smoking prevalence among youth and suggests the need for broader implementation and long-term follow-up strategies to maintain positive outcomes.

Active listening techniques are a specific skill that is trained by caregivers in helping students. Training activities were carried out using lecture and simulation methods on September 13, 2020. The training participants were 50 male and female caregivers. The participants seemed very enthusiastic during the activity. The results of the instrument analysis show that the participants reported the content of the material and the suitability of the written material and the presentation that the team did was the best point in this service activity. On the other hand, the participants stated that the training was too short and felt that they had not had the opportunity to practice. This is a recommendation for the implementation of further community service and needs to be done in a programmed and more intensive manner.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted low-income families, highlighting the critical role of limited resources and unforeseen challenges. The need to remain home for work and study intensified financial strain and increased stress levels. This study aims to identify key factors contributing to family resilience among low-income households during the pandemic. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research was conducted through snowball sampling and in-depth interviews with low-income families in West Java and Central Java, Indonesia. Eleven structured questions guided the interviews, and the transcripts were analyzed using directed content analysis. The findings reveal that flexibility, connectedness, and access to social and economic resources significantly contribute to family resilience. These factors foster collaboration in managing household responsibilities and generating income, suggesting a possible shift away from traditional patriarchal values in Indonesian families. The study offers insights into how these families navigate crises and adapt to changing dynamics, providing a foundation for future research and interventions to enhance family resilience.
