Abstract

The research findings were the mean score of the students’ reading competency in class D was 63.20 and in class H was 36.80. The range score between class D and H was same for descriptive text.  However, for recount text, the score in class D was larger than class H. Comparing to class H, the score variability in class D was larger for descriptive text and lower for recount text. The EFL teachers are suggested to use the appropriate reading strategies and materials which can encourage the students for following fun reading activity in the classroom.

Abstract

This research aimed at observing the set-up of the seating arrangement during the instructions and identifying the students' reasons for having seating preferences. This study was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Banjar, and the subjects were 32 students in 8F class. Two methods were applied in this study, namely observation and interview. Therefore, observation checklist and interview guide were used as the instruments. The results revealed that the set-up of the seating arrangement supported them in terms of comfort, flexibility in doing activities, doing tasks, spaciousness, and collaboration with the students. Meanwhile, it did not support them in terms of concentration, participation in class discussion, and collaboration with the teacher. Regarding their reasons for having particular seats, there were 14 reasons mentioned during the interview. Best friends and leaning on the wall were the factors that had the most and the least effect on the students in choosing their seats.

Abstract

This study reports the implementation of ICT-based learning materials using Blendspace in phonology classes. The ICT-based learning material was developed in the academic year of 2016/2017. The study was conducted in two stages. The rst stage was the validation of the teaching material by two expert judges. The second stage was trying out of the teaching material in the classroom using classroom action research. The learning material developed has been validated by experts using a checklist as an instrument, which has been analysed using the Gregory formula. The expert judges showed that the content validity of the learning material is 90.9%, which means very valid. In order to test the effectiveness of the learning material, it has been implemented in phonology classes joined by the second-semester Diploma III students of the English Department of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, using classroom action research. Based on the teaching and learning process using the material, more than 70% of the students obtained scores between 76 and 100. Fewer than 30% of the students had scores below 75. Therefore, the learning material is considered effective for learning phonology.

Abstract

This study aims, first, to analyze the realization of centripetal, centrifugal, and blurring forces in the implementation of language policies on campus public signage in Bali. Second, it seeks to map the positioning of national and regional language policies through the lens of heteroglossia. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The subjects of the study include campus outdoor signs, campus management representatives, and students who were selected purposively. The study was conducted at five campuses in Bali, namely, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (UPG), Universitas Panji Sakti (UPS), STAHN Mpu Kuturan (MK), Monarch Singaraja (MS), and H.I Singaraja (HIS). Data were collected through observations, including photographing all campus public signs, and conducting interviews with campus management representatives and students. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-interpretative method. The study finds that centripetal and centrifugal language forces are evident in campus public signs through the utilization of particular languages. Indonesian, as the national language, strongly represents the centripetal force. Meanwhile, foreign languages such as English and regional languages like Balinese and Old Javanese signify the centrifugal force. These forces converge in blurring areas, where Indonesian, foreign languages, and regional languages are used simultaneously on the same public signs. The interaction between the centripetal and centrifugal forces is also evident in national and regional language regulations that support heteroglossia in campus public signage.
