Abstract

The capital structure of a bank is directly tied to the risk and rate of return. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of capital structure on financial performance in Indonesia's dual banking system from the first quarter of 2013 to the third quarter of 2019, using 9 Conventional Commercial Banks (BUK) and 9 Sharia Commercial Banks (BUS) as research samples. Panel data regression is employed in this study, with Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) as dependent variables, and Equity to Total Asset Ratio (EAR), Debt to Equity Ratio (DER), company size, and economic growth as independent variables. The findings reveal that EAR, DER, and economic growth all have beneficial and significant effects on conventional commercial banks' ROA and ROE. Company size and economic growth have a positive and significant effect on ROA and ROE, while Sharia Commercial Banks, EAR, and DER have a negative and significant effect on ROA and ROE. These findings indicate that capital structure has a sometimes beneficial impact on financial success.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of green financing on the efficiency of Islamic and conventional banks in Indonesia between 2016 and 2022. Employing the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method to compute efficiency scores and Tobit regression to evaluate the impact of green financing, the findings reveal that conventional banks outperform their Islamic counterparts in terms of efficiency. This disparity is attributed to superior risk management practices and the benefits of operational scale. Notably, green financing enhances the efficiency of both banking types, with its effects being more pronounced in smaller banks. These insights underscore the potential of green financing to advance sustainability without undermining banking efficiency. The study advocates for robust policy frameworks to incentivize green financing initiatives, particularly targeting smaller banks, to maximize their role in fostering sustainable development.

Abstract

The cost of obtaining halal certification is often significant, and this has made its obtainance difficult for many Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). In order to promote the attainment of halal certification, the government has been observed to offer free certification programs for MSEs, with expenses being totally covered by the State Budget (APBN). Based on the results, alternative sources of financing beyond the state budget are necessary, with productive zakat being a plausible option. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the willingness of Muzakki to use productive zakat to finance free halal certification for MSEs and to analyze the factors influencing this willingness. To achieve the stated objectives, scoring and Structural Equation Models, namely Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS), were adopted as the analytical methods. Data were collected via electronic questionnaires administered to 200 respondents who had previously contributed mal zakat, and interviews conducted with representatives from BAZNAS. The obtained results showed that a positive inclination existed among Muzakki to use productive zakat for financing halal certification for MSEs. The observed key factors influencing enthusiasm of Muzakki include external motivation and consistency in zakat contributions. To enhance the role of zakat, the study suggests that zakat institutions should prioritize information dissemination and awareness campaigns through various media channels.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of the merger of three state-owned Islamic banks on financing in Indonesia’s Islamic banking sector, while also analyzing the role of macroeconomic and bank-specific factors. The study employs time-series data and applies the Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to analyze short- and long-term relationships between financing and various macroeconomic and bank-specific variables. The results show that in the short run, the merger did not have an immediate effect on financing, with key variables such as asset size, non-performing financing (NPF), exchange rates, and the unemployment rate significantly influencing financing. In the long run, asset size and NPF positively and negatively impacted financing, respectively, while the exchange rate negatively influenced financing. The merger itself showed no significant long- term effect, likely due to the bank focusing on internal consolidation rather than expanding financing or market share. This study provides insights into the immediate and long-term impacts of bank mergers in the context of Islamic banking, emphasizing the role of macroeconomic factors and internal consolidation processes. The findings offer valuable guidance for policymakers, regulators, banks, and stakeholders in the Islamic banking industry.

Abstract

Health sector indicators are important basis of determining the overall state of a nation’s wealth and welfare. Apart from this broad and conventional perspective on the role of health, in many Islamic countries, health is also part of objective of ‘maqashid sharia’ that needs to be maintained to sustain life. Accordingly, countries invest substantial share of national resources to sustain critical health systems. Notwithstanding these commitments, health service delivery remains a major challenge in these countries, as indicated by the low average life expectancy and the high mortality rate caused by communicable diseases. This study aims to describe and analyze the factors influencing health outcomes, namely life expectancy and mortality rate, in Muslim countries using secondary data from 46 OIC countries from 2010-2018. Employing panel data estimation, the study finds evidence suggesting the important role of a nation’s wealth, health expenditure, educational achievement and the prevalence of smoking as important determinants of life expectancy in OIC countries. In particular, the results show that high incidence of communicable diseases in countries with lower than mean years of schooling and those with significantly wide prevalence of smoking habits may have contributed to high mortality in these countries.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of intellectual capital on the profitability of Indonesian Islamic Commercial Banks (BUS), highlighting the significance of intangible assets in enhancing financial performance. Utilizing regression analysis, this study scrutinizes secondary data from BUS's quarterly financial reports between 2015-2020, focusing on the impact of Value Added Intellectual Capital (VAIC), Non-Performing Financing (NPF), and Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) on Return on Assets (ROA). The study reveals that VAIC has a significant positive effect on ROA, indicating that effective management of intellectual capital can enhance profitability. Conversely, NPF shows a significant negative impact on ROA, while CAR does not significantly affect ROA. The combined influence of GDP, CAR, NPF, and VAIC explains a substantial portion of the variance in ROA. The scope is confined to BUS within 2015-2020. Future research could extend globally and incorporate more variables to enrich insights. Islamic banks should prioritize the effective management of intellectual capital, particularly human resources, to boost profitability and gain a competitive edge. Regulatory bodies, like the OJK, are recommended to establish policies that support and guide the management of intellectual capital within the banking sector. This study provides novel insights into the significance of intellectual capital in improving the profitability of Indonesian Islamic banks, emphasizing the need for effective management strategies and regulatory policies to enhance the sector's performance and contribution to economic growth.

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the willingness to pay (WTP) of the Muslim millennial generation in Bogor Regency, Indonesia, for halal-certified cosmetics and analyzes the factors influencing this decision. Research Methodology: Using primary data from 100 millennial respondents collected through questionnaires, this study applied the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to determine WTP values. Structural equation model-partial least squares (SEM-PLS) was employed to analyze the relationship between WTP and influencing factors, including the perception of halal labels, brand image, attitude, and customer perceived value. Results: The findings indicated that millennials’ average WTP for halal-certified cosmetics was IDR 25,700. The perception of halal labels and customer-perceived value positively impact WTP, whereas brand image and attitude are not significant determinants. Conclusions: Based on these results, it can be concluded that the WTP value of the millennial generation in Bogor Regency for halal cosmetics is 25,700 per product. Limitations: This study focuses on a single region within Bogor, which limits its generalizability. Further studies should explore other regions and demographics in order to obtain broader insights. Contribution:  This study contributes to the understanding of consumer behavior regarding halal products, highlighting the importance of halal certification and perceived value. The findings could support manufacturers in improving marketing strategies and encourage policymakers to facilitate accessibility to halal certification and enhance the demand for halal products.

Abstract

Implementing the dual banking system in Indonesia offers options for customers to use banking services. Before selecting which service to use, customers should perceive each bank's advantages and disadvantages. It can be carried out by conducting a performance evaluation of each bank that generates high profitability measured by the Return on Assets (ROA) value. This study aims to perform internal and external factors analysis that affect bank profitability and to compare profitability between Islamic and Conventional banking in Indonesia using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) method. The result shows that variable Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Financing to Deposit Ratio (FDR) have a significant positive effect on Islamic Model in the long term, whereas policy rate and oil price (COP) hold a significant negative effect. In the Conventional Model, variable CAR, policy rate, and COP hold a significant positive effect, while the exchange rate shows a negative effect. FEVD results indicate that in Islamic Model, the diversity of banking profitability can be explained by various variables, indicating that Islamic banking is more engaged in the real sector than conventional banking.
