Abstract

Apart from the noise and spark of the city, loneliness is often still engulfing teenagers. Previous research found that relationships with peers and parents were predictors of loneliness experienced by adolescents. However, no study has specifically examined parental involvement, especially father involvement. This study also aims to reveal the participation of fathers in parenting with loneliness in adolescents. This research is a quantitative study using a measurement tool adaptation from the UCLA Loneliness Scale and Father Involvement Scale. The sample size of this study was 189 adolescents by convenience sampling technique. The results showed that most teenagers felt lonely but were not related to father involvement in their lives. Discussion of the study tried to elaborate on the factors of location for data collection, developmental stages, and habits of adolescents. The results of the additional analysis showed that female adolescents tended to experience loneliness compared to male adolescents. Suggestions for research are given to get a more comprehensive picture of the phenomenon of loneliness in adolescents. Also, practical advice is also given to reduce loneliness in young women.

Abstract

The formation of faith in adolescents and young people is rooted in their interaction with parents, both father, and mother, as well as friends. Adolescence and young adulthood are periods of seeking faith in various aspects of life. However, there has not been a measurement of the extent to which adolescents and young people regard parents and friends as role models of their faith. This study was aimed to the Perceived Faith Support - Parents and Friends Scale to be the Scale of Faith Support. The study was conducted through convenience sampling, involving 1,390 participants from three major islands in Indonesia. The results of this adaptation proved to be reliable with internal consistency methods, especially Cronbach's Alpha and to be valid with factor analysis methods. Validation with age criteria is proven by the support of faith from the father and mother, but not with friends. The Faith Support Scale is argued to be fit for both theoretical and practical purposes. The development and application of this scale are further discussed.

Abstract

Self-compassion is a healthy attitude toward oneself which positively associated to an individual’s mental health. Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) is a common instrument to measure levels of self-compassion However, to date, there is no study that evaluates the psychometric properties of the Indonesian version of SCS. This study aims to adapt the SCS into Indonesian language and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Indonesian version of SCS. Participants in this study were 329 college students enrolled in universities in Jakarta and surrounding areas and were recruited through convenience sampling. Instrument used in this research is the Indonesian version of SCS, which we named Skala Welas Diri (SWD). The result of psychometric evaluation using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), construct validity, and Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient showed good validity and reliability of SWD. The study suggested that SWD have a similar theoretical model as SCS. The study concludes that SWD could be used as an adequate measurement of self-compassion.

Abstract

Psychological tests in Indonesia have been evolving very slowly. Most psychological practice is still using outdated versions of tests. Psychometric properties such as validity, reliability, and even norms are often based on outdated data or entirely omitted in the manual. Thus, the ability of the tests to yield valid data for various purposes is highly questionable. Most test users, including the psychological community, seem to be indifferent to this situation as they keep using these tests despite the risk of error in the test results which could have legal implications. In this study, we did a survey about test users’ attitudes towards psychological tests. We recruited 149 participants, of which 71.8% were female. The age ranged from 22 to 71 years old (M = 29.4; SD = 7.32). The survey assessed participants’ opinion toward legal properties of psychological test on a five-point scale. All participants had an undergraduate or higher degree in Psychology. The results were interesting. Participants acknowledge that they should use reputable test even though they perceived the price is too expensive. Also, they are willing to pay if those tests are up to date and provide adequate psychometric properties. The results indicate that there is a big opportunity for psychologists and psychometricians to gather forces to fulfill these needs and make more con-tribution to the society.

Abstract

In this research, we investigated the external validity of WAIS-IV-ID using other intelligence tests and educational achievement as criteria. We had 194 participants in total. The results showed the Full-Scale IQ score (FSIQ) of the WAIS-IV-ID had moderate yet significant correlation with three intelligence tests, namely Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM, n = 194), Cattell’s Culture Fair Intelligence Test (CFIT, n = 134), and the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale (WBIS, n = 44). There was also a significant positive correlation between the FSIQ and educational achievement score, the Grade Point Average (GPA, n = 51). The four indexes of the WAIS-IV-ID had a significant positive correlation with the SPM, CFIT, and WBIS, except for Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI). We found significant correlations between full-scale IQ with GPA. For the index score, we found significant correlations between Processing Speed Index (PSI) with GPA. We conclude that the WAIS-IV-ID is valid externally.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the intelligence of Indonesians residing in different islands using the Indonesian WAIS-IV (WAIS-IV-ID), which could be further considered in standardized norm development. Statistical analyses using ANOVAs were performed on the 15 subtests, four indices, and the Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) of the WAIS-IV-ID. This study involved 506 healthy participants, the majority were females, in productive age-groups ranging from 16 to 59 years old, and from middle educational background. Results showed that three indices and 13 subtest scores had significant results and the sample from Java Island had significantly higher scores than the sample from Sumatra, Borneo, and Sulawesi Islands. Based on the conducted analysis, the normative data of the WAIS-IV-ID need to be classified differently between islands or between Java Island and Non-Java Island for more accurate score interpretation. The interpretations and implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract

This study is a first attempt to develop a new instrument using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) method. Researchers have tried to use this method in social psychology research, particularly to measure the construct of national identity. The national identity is a multi-dimensional construct and has several fundamental attributes, namely the same territorial, historical memories, culture, general rights laws and obligations for all members, and equal rights in the economic and territorial mobilization for group members. The study was conducted with 48 participants aged 17-23 years (M = 18.98, SD = 1.25). The result showed that the correlation between explicit and implicit measures on the construct of national identity was positive but not significant. Moreover, the explicit and implicit measurement did not provide the same pattern; indicating that both measurements measure national identity construct from a different point of view. Next, we evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the two measurement methods in the Discussion section and then, provide recommendations for further studies.

Abstract

Construct validity with a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) method is often used by researchers to identify the structure of psychological measurement. Although this CFA method has provided a complete evaluation of the structure of the test, sometimes there is no consensus reached regarding the number of factors. With the CFA method, researchers determined and compared several models to choose the adequate scale structure, including the number of factors in a scale. The network analysis can play a role to help researchers. In this network analysis, the results of the analysis presented in a visual form, which can facilitate the researchers quickly identify the scale structure based on the relations, displayed in the form of lines (thick-thin) and colors (green-red). Current research aims to test the reliability and construct validity; also, shows that network analysis can be an alternative in presenting visualizations and interpretations compare with factor analysis methods, especially CFA. We used The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) with 954 participants aged 16-57 years. The results are either, with the CFA analysis method or network analysis; it is evident that ERQ has two factors, namely suppression and reappraisal. The results show that the network analysis method can be used as an alternative in identifying the structure of the psychological scale.
