Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of consumptive behavior and the factors influencing consumptive behavior among Sumbawanese female students pursuing higher education on Lombok Island, with particular attention to their experiences as migrant students and the role of social interaction. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Informants were selected purposively and consisted of nine Sumbawanese female students enrolled in higher education institutions on Lombok Island. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, involving data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data credibility was strengthened through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that consumptive behavior is not limited to purchasing unnecessary goods but also takes the form of trend-oriented consumption, lifestyle consumption, peer-mediated purchasing, spontaneous buying, and the use of digital payment services. Social media, peer conformity, transaction convenience, lifestyle, and economic conditions operate as interrelated factors. As migrant students, the participants negotiate consumption practices associated with their home culture with consumption patterns encountered in their university and residential environments. From a symbolic interactionist perspective, commodities and consumption activities acquire social meanings through interaction, allowing consumption to function as a mechanism of social adjustment and identity presentation. These findings highlight the importance of financial literacy, self-control, and media literacy in fostering more reflective and rational consumption practices among university students.

Abstract

The phenomenon of single parent women is an emerging social reality in various regions of Indonesia, including West Nusa Tenggara. This study aims to describe the strategies and obstacles faced by single parent women in fulfilling family economic needs. Using a qualitative approach with phenomenological design, this study involved 15 informants selected purposively in North Tanak Malit Hamlet, South Masbagik Village, Masbagik District. Data collection techniques included participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model with source triangulation as validity testing. The results showed that single parent women's strategies include optimizing domestic and public roles through the use of agricultural land, laundry-ironing services, selling snacks, and borrowing from close relatives. The obstacles faced include limited rest time, difficulty managing time between work and childcare, and problematic financial management. This study confirms that the double burden experienced by single parent women is a social construction that requires policy interventions based on economic empowerment and strengthening of social capital.

Abstract

Strengthening Literacy and Numeracy Skills of Elementary School Children Through Community-Based Learning Support in Tejong Hamlet Abstract Low levels of reading literacy and basic numeracy remain significant educational challenges in rural areas, including Dusun Tejong, Ketangga Village, characterized by low reading interest, limited access to reading materials, and low confidence in solving basic multiplication problems. This community service program aimed to strengthen elementary students' reading literacy and numeracy skills through community-based learning assistance while supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on Quality Education. Using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the program engaged university students participating in the Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata), schools, village authorities, parents, and the local community in needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Sixteen elementary students participated in activities combining phonics and storytelling for reading literacy with gradual practice, short-column multiplication, and motivational rewards for numeracy. Evaluation showed notable improvements: students confident in reading aloud increased from 5 to 14, those able to retell reading content increased from 3 to 10, and those able to solve multiplication problems increased from 5 to 7. The program also enhanced learning motivation, self-confidence, and active participation through multi-stakeholder collaboration. These findings demonstrate that community-based learning assistance is a promising strategy for strengthening children's reading literacy and supporting basic numeracy development, although sustained and continuous assistance remains necessary to consolidate numeracy gains and ensure longer-term educational outcomes. Low levels of reading literacy and basic numeracy remain major educational challenges in rural areas, including Dusun Tejong, Ketangga Village, as indicated by students’ low interest in reading, limited access to reading materials, and lack of confidence in solving basic multiplication problems. This community service program aimed to strengthen elementary school students’ reading literacy and numeracy skills through community-based learning assistance while supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on Quality Education. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving university students participating in the Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata), schools, village authorities, parents, and the local community in needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Sixteen elementary school students participated in the program. Reading literacy was strengthened through phonics and storytelling, while numeracy activities used gradual practice, short-column multiplication, and rewards to enhance learning motivation. Evaluation results showed improvements in students’ abilities: those confident in reading aloud increased from 5 to 14, those able to retell stories from 3 to 10, and those able to solve multiplication problems from 5 to 7. The program also enhanced students’ learning motivation, self-confidence, and active participation. These findings indicate that community-based learning assistance can effectively strengthen children’s reading literacy and contribute to basic numeracy development, although numeracy gains remain relatively modest and require sustained follow-up support.

Abstract

Local Potential-Based Community Empowerment through Moringa Leaf Cookie Innovation in Ketangga Village Abstract The utilization of Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaves in Tejong Hamlet, Ketangga Village, East Lombok Regency, remains limited to household vegetable consumption, despite the plant's abundant availability and potential as a value-added food product. This community service initiative aimed to enhance the community's knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurial interest through the innovation of Moringa leaf cookies, utilizing the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The activity involved 38 participants, comprising housewives, youths, and general community members. Implementation followed the ABCD stages—Discovery, Dream, Design, Define, and Destiny—encompassing local asset identification, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), training, cookie-making demonstrations and hands-on practice, Break-Even Point (BEP) analysis guidance, and monitoring and evaluation. Program evaluation utilized pre-test and post-test instruments, observations, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, with data analyzed through both quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. Evaluation results demonstrated significant improvements in participant outcomes: knowledge regarding Moringa leaf potential rose from 15% to 70%, cookie production skills increased from 25% to 90%, and entrepreneurial interest grew from 30% to 85%. The program also produced Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for making Moringa leaf cookies, an easily applicable product formula utilizing appropriate technology, simple organoleptic test results indicating high product acceptance, and a BEP analysis simulation to introduce the concept of household-scale business viability. This activity demonstrates that the ABCD approach can effectively optimize local potential for community empowerment and serve as a foundational step toward developing sustainable, local food-based enterprises.

Abstract

This study examines the pattern of latent conflict between PT. Sadhana and cultivator farmers and its implications for the community economy in Senanggalih Village, Sambelia District, East Lombok Regency. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through naturalistic observation, interviews, and documentation involving 16 informants consisting of village officials, community representatives, and farmers. Data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion or verification, with validity strengthened through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings show that the latent conflict developed as a continuation of earlier open land conflict after mediation reduced overt confrontation without resolving the underlying dispute over access and management of land. The latent pattern was reflected in negative discussion, complaints, surveillance, rejection or ignoring of company requests, delayed responses, unorganized resistance to partnership, and generalized distrust. The economic implications were most visible in agricultural production because cultivator farmers faced limitations in accessing land, capital, technology, and agricultural infrastructure. The company’s contribution through employment, empowerment, and social infrastructure was considered limited by informants and had not substantially improved the local economy. The study concludes that unresolved tenure relations and weak communication can reproduce latent conflict and constrain local economic development.

Abstract

This study examines gender relations in the management of gold mining in Pelangan Village, Sekotong District, West Lombok Regency. The study aims to identify the division of roles between men and women and analyze the social, economic, health, and environmental impacts of gender relations in mining activities. A qualitative descriptive approach was used. Data were collected through observation, unstructured interviews, and documentation during fieldwork in Pelangan Village in 2024. Informants included village and community figures, male and female miners, and residents involved in or familiar with mining activities. Data were analyzed interactively through data reduction, data display, and conclusion verification, with source triangulation used to strengthen credibility. The findings show a gendered division of labor: men are concentrated in physically demanding and high-risk extraction, transportation, and casting activities, while women are more involved in breaking, processing, grinding, and other supporting activities. This division creates functional interdependence but also produces differences in remuneration, access to decision-making, and control over mining income. Mining has improved household income, enabled spending on housing, vehicles, and education, and opened economic opportunities for women. At the same time, workers face occupational health and safety risks, while mercury-related processing and unmanaged waste contribute to environmental pressures. The study argues that functional complementarity should not automatically be equated with gender equality; fair access to resources, information, income, safety, and decision-making remains necessary.

Abstract

Parental separation can alter adolescents’ family relationships, social support, and opportunities to construct a stable identity. This study examines the existence of adolescents from broken-home families during an identity-crisis phase in Suntalangu Village, Suela District, focusing on how adolescents experience family rupture, how relationships with parents and peers shape their responses, and how parenting patterns are reflected in their everyday lives. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation between May 28 and June 30, 2024. Six informants were involved: three adolescents from broken-home families and three parents as supporting informants. Data credibility was strengthened through source, technique, and time triangulation, while analysis followed data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the adolescents’ experiences can be understood through a pre-condition stage and a condition stage. The pre-condition stage is marked by the importance of parent–child communication and peer relationships. The condition stage involves changes in social interaction in the digital era, broader social transformation, and escalation of risk situations, including early pregnancy, abortion, and forced marriage reported in the research setting. Parenting patterns varied, with detailed findings most clearly showing authoritarian and permissive practices, while the thesis abstract also identifies democratic parenting. The study concludes that adolescent existence is expressed through efforts to accept family change, adapt to new circumstances, solve problems, and improve oneself.

Abstract

This study examines the strategies and challenges faced by single mothers in implementing religious education for children in Tirtanadi Village, Labuhan Haji District, East Lombok Regency. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive case-study orientation. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation involving 10 informants consisting of single mothers as primary informants and close relatives as additional informants. Data validity was strengthened through source, technique, and time triangulation, while analysis involved data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that single mothers use two main strategies: enrolling children in Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur'an (TPQ) and, for families with sufficient financial capacity, sending children to Islamic boarding schools. TPQ is considered practical because mothers have limited time for direct instruction and some feel that their own religious knowledge is insufficient. Islamic boarding schools are chosen to provide more intensive religious learning and supervision when mothers cannot closely monitor children at home. The main challenges are children's preference for gadgets and limited parent-child interaction caused by mothers' dual responsibilities as breadwinners and caregivers. The study indicates that religious education in single-parent families is shaped by the interaction between economic demands, time availability, institutional support, and children's digital environment.

Abstract

This study examines the conflict of interests surrounding illegal logging between communities and the government in Timbanuh Village, Pringgasela District, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. The study employed a qualitative approach with field observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were collected from community members and village government actors and were validated through triangulation. The findings show that the conflict is rooted in competing interests over forest resources. Local residents depend on forests for livelihoods, including grass for livestock feed and traditional harvesting of forest honey, while government institutions are responsible for conservation and law enforcement in the Gunung Rinjani National Park area. The conflict is intensified by economic dependence, limited alternative livelihoods, differences in understanding of forest use, and the persistence of local customs. Traditional practices surrounding forest honey, including harvesting according to the Sasak calendar, intersect with formal conservation rules. The conflict has passed through latent, manifest, de-escalation, and post-conflict phases. Dialogue and mediation have produced arrangements concerning access to grass, reforestation, tourism development, and restrictions on tree cutting. The study concludes that sustainable forest governance requires a balance between conservation, community livelihoods, cultural considerations, law enforcement, and meaningful community participation.
