Abstract

Intelligence is one of psychological factors which affect the speaking proficiency. Therefore, this study aims at finding out whether or not there is a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills. With regard to the methodology applied in this study, a correlation research was used to determine whether, and to what degree, a relationship exists between two or more quantifiable variables in form of quantitative method. Purposive sampling was used in the correlational research due to the assumption that the selected students were able to give information or data in relation to the research problems based on the research design. Thus, 40 students were chosen as the samples. The study was conducted at the first-year students of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. Moreover, the quantifiable data were obtained from speaking test based on the Heaton assessment and intelligence test based on the Barret assessment which were distributed to the students. The data were then analyzed by Pearson product moment. The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills in degree of high correlation. In other words, the assumption views that the higher intelligence belongs to students the better ability they speak.

The study was designed in the form of quantitative and qualitative descriptive studies (mixed methods). Subjects in this study were the 5th semester students of the teaching and education study program in Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University who took the speaking class as part of their courses. The data were collected by using the methods of observation, interviews, and questionairre. Data were analyzed through triangulation data. The results showed that language anxiety felt by students during their speaking presentation in English might result in their inability to deliver ideas clearly and this would have a negative impact on their performance. In contrast, langauge  motivation  during  speaking presentation would help students to feel less anxious and be more concentrated on the task and would result in a better speaking performance.

Abstract

In this research, the researchers convince the readers about factors that affecting the effectiveness of Inter-dialectical accommodation among sellers-buyers. In this research, they prove how the theory of Giles cannot cover the discourse among sellers and buyers in terms of accommodation,   which is done in Central Lombok Nusa Tenggara Barat Province. The researchers describe the phenomenon of the inter-dialectical accommodation in the dialect of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku. The object of this research is the activities of sellers-buyers in doing the transaction in the market. The data in this research is taken through observation, recording, interview and note taking of the accommodation among sellers and buyers discourse in some markets in Praya Barat, Praya and Jonggat Sub-district. The researchers use the interpretative qualitative method with some data to reflect the condition of sellers versus buyers discourse in the market. The researchers find the preliminary data shows that the Giles Convergence Theory is un-effective or not applicable in the market where sellers and buyers of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku assemble and do a transaction. However, the research result shows the un-effectiveness or there is no effect of converging in bargaining. This research reveals that the convergence theory by Giles cannot be generalized into all part of the discourse, especially in the dialect of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku.

Abstract

Developing human resource and its institution on the basis of indigenous knowledge and wisdom is the theme where this study is embedded. It is a scientific contribution to the development of tertiary education system in which English is offered in all levels and in all scientific areas. This research is based on the fact that English as a foreign language is considered important even though it does not attract many people's interests due to many different factors. The most dominant factors are certainly both teachers and learners of the English as a foreign language (EFL) themselves. This study investigates the effect of myth and tradition of Bugis-Makassar on the teaching strategies of the EFL teachers and the learning strategies of the EFL learners in several universities in South Sulawesi Province. It aims to comprehend the impact of the local culture on the learning process applied by teachers and students. Based on both qualitative and quantitative methods, it is found that three significant categories are underlying the culture - “faith”, “norm”, and “value” inherent in local myth and tradition of Bugis-Makassar value on the preference strategies in foreign language learning. The statistical measurement shows that “value” is the most influential aspect among the others. In addition, the three other categories; ‘Knowledge’, ‘Skill’, and ‘Action’ are of affecting methods from local myth and tradition. Deep understanding on the influence of both myth and tradition, as part of culture society towards students’ learning strategies as well as teachers’ strategies, would be meaningful inputs for adjusting the designed and adapted materials in achieving the objective goals of learning

The research used the pre-experimental method by performing a pre-test and post-test. The populations were the students of class BI 4.2 STKIP YPUP Makassar. The samples were as many as 20 students. The independent samples t-test indicates a significant improvement group after the treatment (the t-observed value and the sig.tailed are lower than 0.05 in the significance level of 2.093<12.22). this shows that the mean score of the post-test is greater than the pre-test (77.7>68.4). The improvement can also be seen in the five components in writing namely: the content, vocabulary, language use, organization, and mechanics. In which result of the post-test is greater than the pre-test. This implies that the students’ writing skill gets better. It can be concluded that the Admit and Exit Slips teaching technique can improve the students’ writing skill and this offers a significant pedagogical implication that needs to be empowered by Indonesian EFL teachers.
