Abstract

This study investigates the use of Instagram as a communication tool by the DAM (Student Representative Council) of Fikom Unisba in engaging and informing students. The importance of social media platforms, particularly Instagram, for student organizations in fostering interaction and enhancing the visibility of organizational activities is emphasized. A qualitative research method was employed, utilizing interviews with key members of DAM to understand the strategies, strengths, and challenges associated with Instagram as a platform for organizational communication. The findings indicate that while Instagram effectively enhances DAM’s presence and facilitates the dissemination of important information, there is still a need for improvement in student engagement and interaction. The study concludes that Instagram plays a crucial role in strengthening the identity and credibility of student organizations, but more creative, interactive, and responsive strategies are required to boost participation and deepen student engagement. The results highlight the potential of social media in advancing organizational goals and building stronger communication channels with students. This research contributes to the field of communication studies by exploring the use of social media as a strategic tool in student organization communications.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is a primary therapy for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease. This study aims to examine the relationship between healthcare communication, emotional support, and family support on patients' decisions to undergo hemodialysis. A cross-sectional survey method was employed, involving 77 patients at the Hemodialysis Unit of Dustira Hospital, Cimahi. The research instruments included structured questionnaires measuring variables such as healthcare communication, healthcare emotional support, family support, and consent decisions. Data were analyzed using SmartPLS software. The results showed that healthcare communication had a significant influence on emotional support (R = 0.640, p < 0.001) and family support (R = 0.611, p < 0.001). Healthcare communication also had a very strong and significant impact on patients' consent decisions (R = 0.663, p < 0.001). Although the emotional support from healthcare providers had a small impact on consent decisions (R = 0.034, p > 0.05), family support had a relatively small but greater influence (R = 0.108, p < 0.05). In conclusion, effective communication between healthcare providers and family support is crucial in the medical decision-making process for hemodialysis patients. Enhancing the quality of communication between healthcare providers and patients is essential to support better medical decisions and improve patient health outcomes.

Abstract

This research study examines the impact of the post-truth era—where emotional responses, personal beliefs, and subjective interpretations are more influential than objective facts—on Generation Z's news consumption patterns, particularly in the context of social media. The objective of this study is to examine and assess Generation Z's news consumption patterns in the context of the social media platform Instagram. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, observational studies, and a comprehensive review of relevant literature. The purposive selection of respondents included individuals from Generation Z who actively use Instagram, with a minimum age of 17.The study's findings suggest that Generation Z's news consumption habits are influenced by the prevalence of easily accessible social media platforms, as well as trends and influencers in this space. While respondents demonstrated an understanding of the potential risks associated with fake news, they frequently encountered challenges in verifying the reliability of the content they encountered. This underscores the necessity for strategies aimed at promoting news literacy. The study found that trust in news sources was influenced by the reputation of the media outlet, the visual appeal of the content, and the opinions of their social networks. The study's findings underscore the pervasive influence of prevailing trends, prominent influencers, and the ease of access to information, particularly through social media platforms, on Generation Z's news consumption patterns. While respondents acknowledged the dangers associated with fake news, their inclination to verify information remains a significant challenge.

Abstract

In the contemporary era of globalization, public participation has emerged as a pivotal element in the management of environmental issues.  The city of Bandung, in particular, is confronted with a myriad of environmental challenges that necessitate the active involvement of the public. This research endeavors to explore the extent of public participation and its influencing factors in the context of environmental issues in Bandung.  Specifically, the objective is threefold: first, to identify forms of public participation; second, to understand the role of stakeholders; and third, to evaluate the effectiveness of communication channels.  The study also aims to provide recommendations to improve public involvement in environmental management. The research method is a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, involving various stakeholders, including NGOs, environmental experts, and the general public. The results show that public participation in Bandung is still limited and often formalistic.  Despite the existence of diverse communication channels, the level of public awareness and engagement in environmental issues remains inadequate. Stakeholders, comprising government entities and NGOs, play a pivotal role in fostering enhanced participation. This study posits that to augment public participation in the management of environmental issues in Bandung City, a more inclusive and strategic approach is imperative. Recommendations are put forth to refine communication channels and cultivate public awareness, thereby facilitating active contribution to environmental decision-making.

Abstract

The phenomenon of being childfree by choice is gaining traction in Indonesia, yet it remains a subject of significant social debate within the country's pronatalist culture. This study investigates the intrapersonal communication dynamics driving the proactive decision-making process of unmarried adult women who voluntarily choose not to have children. Adopting a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observations with five key informants and four supporting experts. The analysis is theoretically grounded in the integration of intrapersonal communication processes with the four phases of proactive decision-making: Intelligence, Design, Choice, and Implementation. The findings reveal that the decision to be childfree is fueled by a complex interplay of "because-motives," such as past exposure to dysfunctional family dynamics, and "in-order-to motives," including the pursuit of professional autonomy and emotional stability. The process initiates with the Intelligence phase, where individuals critically observe marital failures in their immediate environment. Subsequently, in the Design phase, they conceptualize alternative life trajectories that defy traditional gender roles. The Choice phase is characterized by a rational and value-based assessment of long-term financial and emotional risks versus the benefits of personal freedom. Finally, the Implementation phase manifests as a consistent integration of the childfree lifestyle into daily financial planning and social interactions. This study concludes that being childfree is not merely a rejection of parenthood but a profound exercise in self-identity and autonomy, requiring deep reflection to navigate societal expectations.

Abstract
