Abstract

Background: Adolescents, a group with high nutritional needs, are facing the triple burden of malnutrition. Depok has the highest prevalence of overweight adolescents in Indonesia. Data shows an increase in the consumption of high-fat and high-sodium foods. Technological advancements have made foods more accessible, in 2020 Indonesia had the highest food delivery service usage in Southeast Asia. These factors may negatively impact adolescent diet quality, leading to health issues and higher risks of degenerative diseases. Objectives: This study analyzes the factors related to diet quality among adolescents at Yadika 12 High School Depok. Methods: This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design conducted at Yadika 12 High School Depok with 108 respondents selected using stratified random sampling. The dependent variable was diet quality, while the independent variables included the frequency of food delivery services usage, high-risk consumption habits, and nutrition knowledge. Diet quality was measured using the Diet Quality Index for Adolescents (DQI-A). Other variables were assessed using questionnaires and a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Bivariate analysis performed using the Spearman test. Results: Bivariate analysis indicated that the frequency of food delivery services usage (r=-0.044, p-value=0.654) is not associated with diet quality. In contrast, high-risk consumption habits (r=-0.256, p-value=0.007) and nutritional knowledge (r=0.217, p-value=0.024) associated with diet quality. Conclusions: High-risk consumption habits and nutrition knowledge are factors related to the diet quality of adolescents at Yadika 12 High School Depok. Interventions and implementing balanced nutrition guidelines and other nutritional information can be effective steps to improve the diet quality of adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a nutritional issue with an escalating prevalence. Riskesdas 2018 indicates that the adult obesity rate has reached 21,8%. College students are in a transitional phase from adolescence to adulthood, which necessitates adaptation to the academic environment that often lead to the development of unhealthy lifestyles. This issue causes college students susceptible to obesity due to risk factors, such as eating patterns, eating behavior, physical activity, and stress. Objectives: Analyzing factors associated with the incidence of obesity among college students at Fakultas Ilmu Kesehatan Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (FIKES UPN) "Veteran" Jakarta. Methods: Observational analytic research with a cross-sectional design, conducted from February-April 2024, involving 232 respondents. Respondents were selected using the stratified random sampling. Data were obtained using questionnaires and anthropometric measurements then analyzed using the Chi-Square Test. Results: The statistical analysis indicate that the frequency of sweet food consumption has a p-value of 0.111, sweet beverages frequency (p-value=0.733), high-fat food frequency (p-value=0.036), sweet intake (p-value=1.000), high-fat intake (p-value=0.426), fiber intake (p-value=0.819), emotional eating (p-value=0.057), external eating (p-value=0.871), physical activity (p-value=0.271), and stress (p-value=1.000). Conclusions: The frequency of consuming high-fat foods has been significantly associated with obesity among college students. Consequently, students are recommended to be more mindful of the frequency of high-fat foods, such as fast food and fried food, to minimize factors contributing to obesity. In contrast, obesity is not associated with the frequency of sweet foods and beverages consumption, sweet intake, high-fat intake, fiber intake, emotional eating, external eating, physical activity, and stress.

Abstract

Background: In 2018, the province of DKI Jakarta ranked first in obesity with a prevalence rate of 10% and second in overweight with a prevalence rate of 15.1% among adolescents aged 13-15 years. These figures exceed the national prevalence rate. Obesity has a negative impact on their quality of life. These effects include reduced mobility, academic performance, and various factors that can influence the occurrence of overweight and obesity in adolescents. Objectives:The objective of this study is to determine the determinants of overweight and obesity among adolescents aged 13-15 years in DKI Jakarta. Methods: This research design is a cross-sectional study that utilizes secondary data obtained from the 2018 Riskesdas (Indonesia basic health research) survey, with a sample size of 597 adolescent respondents aged 13-15 years. Bivariate analysis was conducted using chi-square, and multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression. Results:The results of the bivariate analysis show that maternal education (p=0.001) and energy drinks (p=0.036) have an influence on the occurrence of obesity in adolescents. In the multivariate analysis, it is revealed that the variable that most significantly and statistically affects the occurrence of obesity in adolescents is mother's education, with an odds ratio (OR) value of 1.895 and a CIf1.305-2.752. Conclusions: The determinants of overweight and obesity among adolescents aged 13-15 years in DKI Jakarta are mother's education, with an ap value of 0.001 and an odds ratio (OR) value of 1.895. This means that mothers with lower education levels have a 1.895 times higher risk of having adolescents with obesity status.

Abstract

Background: More than 90% of adults with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. This condition is known to increase oxidative stress, which contributes to cellular damage and disease complications. As a functional food, kefir has long been recognized for its various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the potential of randu honey kefir in preventing oxidative stress in diabetic rats. Methods: This study employed a randomized block design with a 21-day intervention period. A total of 42 male Sprague Dawley rats aged 6–8 weeks were divided into six groups: KS (standard), KN (negative control), K1 (quercetin), K2 (metformin), P1 (randu honey kefir 1.8 mL/200g BW), and P2 (preventive group). Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin at 40 mg/kgBW combined with a high-fat diet. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were analyzed using spectrophotometry, while interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured using ELISA kits. Results: Significant differences (p-value<0.05) were observed in MDA, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels between the P1 and P2 groups compared with the KN group. Randu honey kefir groups showed mean oxidative stress marker levels comparable to those of quercetin and metformin treatments, including MDA (P1: 32.9 ± 29.35 nmol/mL; P2: 23.77 ± 11.63 nmol/mL), TNF-α (P1: 45.37 ± 31.25 pg/mL; P2: 37.81 ± 27.00 pg/mL), and IL-6 (P1: 64.81 ± 21.35 pg/mL; P2: 59.23 ± 14.95 pg/mL). Conclusions: Randu honey kefir intervention demonstrates potential in suppressing oxidative stress in diabetic rats.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a transitional phase marked by increased nutritional needs. Anemia among adolescent girls is an important health problem that can influence growth, along with physical and mental performance. The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey reported that 15.5% of individuals aged 15-24 years were anemic. Limited knowledge of anemia and iron supplement tablets inadequate family support, and low Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) contribute to the risk of anemia. Objectives: To analyze factors associated with anemia among adolescent girls at SMA Negeri 3 Jakarta. Methods: This research applied a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional method, involving 180 students from grades X and XI who were chosen using a stratified random sampling technique. Variables examined included MUAC status, knowledge of anemia, knowledge of iron supplementation tablets, and family support. The study collected data through questionnaires complemented by anthropometric measurement procedures. Determinant variables were identified using chi-square analysis and logistic regression methods. Results: Anemia was found in 43.0% of adolescent girls. Knowledge of iron supplementation tablets showed a significant association with anemia and was the most influential factor (p-value=0.002; OR=0.48). Conversely, MUAC status (p-value=0.12), knowledge of anemia (p-value=0.11), and family support (p-value=0.05) showed no significant association. Conclusions: Knowledge of iron supplementation tablets was observed to have a correlation with cases of anemia (p-value=0.032) and served as a determinant factor of anemia among adolescent girls. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) status, knowledge of anemia, and family support showed no significant association with anemia incidence. Students with better knowledge regarding iron supplementation tablets were associated with a 52.0% lower probability of anemia than students with insufficient understanding, after controlling for other variables. Efforts to improve nutrition education and promote iron supplementation intake are crucial for anemia prevention.

Abstract

Background: Elevated blood pressure in adolescence is an early indicator of future risk for hypertension and cardiovascular disease in adulthood, with contributing factors including central adiposity, excess body fat, dietary patterns, and sedentary behaviour. The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey reported that 29.5% of the population aged ≥15 years in Jakarta had hypertension, highlighting the urgency of early-life interventions to reduce the future burden of chronic disease. Objectives: To analyze determinants associated with elevated blood pressure among secondary school students in South Jakarta. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach with cross-sectional design. A total of 350 students were selected using stratified random sampling from two secondary schools in South Jakarta. Data collection encompassed structured assessments of participant characteristics, the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), the Adolescent Sedentary Activity Questionnaire (ASAQ), and anthropometric measurements. Data analysis was performed using Chi-Square test and logistic regression analysis. Results: Significant associations were observed between elevated blood pressure and waist circumference (p-value<0.001), body fat percentage (p-value<0.001), and sedentary behavior (p-value=0.004). In contrast, dietary fat intake was not significantly associated with elevated blood pressure (p-value=0.865). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that students with high waist circumference had a 3.7-fold higher risk of elevated blood pressure (95% CI=2.040–6.870) compared with those with a normal waist circumference. Conclusions: This study identifies waist circumference as the primary determinant associated with elevated blood pressure among secondary school students in South Jakarta. As a key indicator of central obesity, routine monitoring of waist circumference among adolescents is recommended as a preventive strategy to reduce the risk of elevated blood pressure and hypertension.

Abstract

Background: Double Burden of Malnutrition (DBM) refers to the coexistence of two forms of malnutrition within the same individual. DKI Jakarta is among the provinces reporting a relatively low prevalence of normal nutritional status among adolescents at the national level. The occurrence of DBM is multifactorial and may be influenced by sociodemographic characteristics (including household size, parental occupation, and parental educational attainment), dietary patterns, the consumption of high-risk foods, and physical activity. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the factors associated with the occurrence of the double burden of malnutrition among adolescents aged 16-18 years in DKI Jakarta. Methods: A total of 528 adolescents residing in DKI Jakarta were included, and a cross-sectional study design was employed using secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (Survei Kesehatan Indonesia, SKI). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with the occurrence of DBM. Results: Among the 528 adolescents, 0.8% were identified as experiencing DBM, comprising stunting-thinness (0.6%) and stunting-overweight (0.2%). Multivariate analysis revealed that the consumption of foods high in salt was significantly associated with DBM (p-value=0.024; OR=0.058; 95%CI=0.005-0.686). However, the low prevalence of DBM represents a study limitation, indicating that future studies with larger sample sizes are required. Conclusions: The findings indicate that adolescents who frequently consume salty foods had lower odds of experiencing DBM compared to those who rarely consume such foods.

Abstract

Background: Central Sulawesi recorded the highest prevalence of underweight in 2022. One-quarter of children were underweight in this province, which placed them at risk of stunting. Food diversity was a protective factor against stunting. Unmet Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD) indicates inadequate feeding practices that contribute to undernutrition. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of unmet Minimum Dietary Diversity among children aged 6-23 months in Central Sulawesi and its determinants. Methods: This study analyzed secondary data from the Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey in 2022 with a total sample size of 2372 children. The outcome variable was Unmet Minimum Dietary Diversity, and the determinant variables were parental education, occupation, children's age group, and child sex. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the association between the determinant variables and the outcome. Results: The prevalence of unmet MDD was 75.5%. Children in the age group of 6-11 months, having mothers with the lowest education level, having fathers with an unstable income, and male children were significant determinants of unmet MDD. Children in the age group 6-11 months had a 2.6 times greater risk of having unmet MDD, and it was the most dominant determinant for unmet MDD. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that unmet MDD was more prevalent among children at the beginning of the complementary feeding age. To reduce the risk of undernutrition, strengthened nutrition interventions should be given to improve feeding practices among children in the complementary feeding age.
