Abstract

This article is aimed to explain trends in Moslem scholars’ understanding on abrogation (naskh) theory. The naskh has been commonly conceived as final abrogation of particular Quranic verse by other one. But, this term has transformed from naskh as final abrogation to postponement (nas’). There have been three trends in understanding the naskh as postponement. First, the concept of postponement does not differ basically from the substance of naskh as final abrogation in the sense that both naskh and nas` have same meaning, as the majority of Moslem scholars said. Second, the nas` has own meaning which differs from the naskh, but both are regarded as complementary to each other, as argued by al-Zarkasyī, al-Biqā’ī, and Ibn Āsyūr. Third, the idea that the postponement constitutes an alternative to the naskh as final abrogation, so its proponents, such as Muhammad ‘Abduh and Nashr Hāmid Abū Zayd rejected the naskh as final abrogation and replaced it by the nas’ as postponement.

Abstract

This article aims to lay a philosophical foundation on the universality of the message of the Qur’an as a necessity in a multi-interdisciplinary approach to interpreting the Qur’an. The study departs from the thoughts of Qur’anic scholars from the classical to the contemporary period as set out in their works. The “universality” here means two senses: first, compatibility of the message, owing to its universal and perennial ethical contents, to be applied across boundaries of time and space; second, various aspects of contents of the Qur’an, such as theological, legal, ethical, and scientific issues. This article also suggests methods in exploring the universality of the Qur’anic doctrines and gives one example of its application, especially in understanding Quranic values in its doctrine of warfare. The authors conclude that an integrative approach to the Qur’an is needed to be accompanied by an awareness of the universality of the message of the Qur’an which lies in the spirit of ethical principles and the need for meaning in a broader spectrum in the modern era. Neglecting its universal message will cause interpretations to lose this spirit, such as classical Moslem interpreters’ understanding on jihad-verses by insisting that the jihad as warfare is a permanent obligation upon Moslems. The falsehood of the interpretation is due to neglecting the ethical principle i.e. humanity behind the law of reciprocity that underlies particular verses on warfare.

Abstract

The integration of knowledge has become a central issue emerging among scholars in Indonesian Islamic universities. Some ideas have been proposed to make “bridge” between religious and secular knowledge, as we can see, for instance, in the thought of Kuntowijoyo on “prophetic social sciences”, M. Dawam Rahardjo on “decolonization of social sciences”, M. Amin Abdullah on “spider web of knowledge”, and Mulyadhi Kartanegara on “holistic reconstruction of knowledge”.The researches conducted so far have not touched the core problem in all these proposed ideas yet, namely the place of the Qur`an as a revelation in the integration of knowledge. In fact, the Qur`an constitutes a source of knowledge and, at the same time, an inspiring and guiding scripture, for Moslem’s beliefs, praactices, and thought. Therefore, neglecting the Qur`an in constructing Moslem’s thought on the integration of knowledge will make our understanding the issue artificial. The present article is aimed at studying the thought of Kuntowijoyo and M. Dawam Rahardjo by focusing the discussion on main points: firstly, on the place the Qur`an in the integration of knowledge (as inspiration, source of knowledge, or starting point in building theory) (and the present author will describe data as they are); secondly, intellectual and social background that play important role behind the ideasand modes of use of the Qur`an for intellectual enterprises (and the present author will go into deep analysis on factors or contexts in which the ideas formed); thirdly, the originality, strength, and weakness of the ideas (and the present author will examine the ideas in accordance with some standards).

Abstract

This article intends to examine the integration between Islamic studies and philosophy from the philosophy of science perspective. The focus of this study primarily focuses on Islamic studies in Islamic university in Indonesia, regarding the real conditions of its science seen from the perspective of philosophical learning. The second focus is the offer of the philosophy of science approach in developing Islamic studies. The article concludes that Islamic studies at the university are “poor of philosophy" because the direction of the study is mostly dominated by normative studies.  Therefore, as the first step, the bachelor degree in all faculties of Islamic university should study philosophy of science, it is also necessary to develop Islamic studies from the philosophy of science perspective, such as the philosophy proposed by Thomas Kuhn and Imre Lakatos.

Abstract

This article is aimed to describe psychological approaches in the study of religions. Psychology provides many perspectives, such as Feudian psychoanalysis, eventhough it considered religion as pathology, also provided semantic tool to understand inner religious experiences. Another side of psychoanalysis functioned to study the development of children’s religious experiences. Psychology also can be applied to study spiritual awakening, or more precisely, conversion from non-religious into religious experience, or from situation to other one. Trans-personal psychology is more concerned with therapeutic practices, but in the view of Dan Merkur, this kind of psychology should be called as “theology” rather than psychology in true sense of the word.

Abstract

This article is intended to argue against those who say that the Islamic philosophy is really nothing more than thetrue ancient Greek philosophy that has been “repacked” by Islam, and to prove that Islamic philosophy, whilebeing as a result of historical process of its adopting of Greek philosophy, is to large extent the own Muslimthinkers’ thoughts by “adapting” that philosophical tradition with Islamic doctrine. As the result, they havesought to compromise between rational and revealed truth. Therefore, it sees that Islamic philosophy is a attemptto interpret the Qur’an in the light of reason. By this way of argumentation, the author wishes to say that thebalanced view of the origin of Islamic philosophy, e.g. between the historical and textual roots or betweeninfluence and originality, must be recognized, so that we will have a holistic understanding of the existence ofthis philosophical tradition in Islam.

Abstract

This article is aimed at analyzing critically George Caspar Homans’s theory of exchange. The critical analysis that may be called here simply as “maping ideology” embodied in theory is needed to place the theory within the specific social and political condition, intellectual background, school of thought having great influence on it, and so forth, and also to assesses its limitedness as a theoretical frame-work of scientific research to explain complicated social phenomenon or human interaction. Influenced by psychological and economic theories, Homans’s theory of exchange has been intended at the beginning by the author as attack against Marxism domination that addressed criticism to capitalism as macro-structure oppressing the proletariat by the ruling class and against Durkheimian structural functionalism. By addressing the attack against Marxism and because of his intellectual and social background, Homans’s theory then has been regarded as an explanation justifying the existing situation. Being attributed as psychological reductionism, as neglecting the important role of structure, and deterministic are some of the objections addressed to his theory.

Abstract

This article is aimed to describe dialectical relation between Islamic philosophy (hikmah) and Islamic religious doctrin (syarî’ah). The tension between two has emerged since declination of rational theology (Mu’tazilite) and since the rise of ortodox theology (Asy’arite). Al-Ghazâlî, one of prominent scholars of the Asy’arite, has attacked Moslem philosophers, such as Ibn Sînâ. This article has came to the conclusion that in such tension, in which religion and rational thought met, the two neither reached utterly different results, nor yet were they identical, but seemed to run parallel to one another.

Abstract

The commonly accepted assumption among Muslims is that the Islamic law of inheritance known as ‘ilm al-farā`idh represents what correctly understood from the Qur`ān. This article is intended to study David S. Powers’ study of the transformation of the so-called proto-Islamic law of inheritance accepted from the Prophet into this science. The study will be focused on his approach to this issue, his stand within oriental study of the Qur`ān, and his study viewed from pos-colonial perspective. Employing synthesized typology of orientalists’ stand in studying Islam, and Edward Said’s perspective of the so-called “intellectual powers”, in this article, I argue that Powers’ study of the issue represents revisionist’s stand of Islam and the Qur`an, applying synthesized approaches of literary and historical criticism. But, his analysis belongs the Western radical analysis of influence of Roman law on the Islamic law and in the context of West-East opposision, reflects Western people’s superiority against Eastern’s (Muslim community) inferiority in understanding their own scripture, the Qur`ān.
