Abstract

Palm oil midrib can also be used as a base for composting. Palm fronds which have been underutilized by the community and are more wasteful are usually only stacked around the tree. One way to use oil palm leaf fronds as a source of plant nutrients is in the form of compost. Palm oil fronds contain high lignin, so the process of composting oil palm fronds takes a long time. The process of decomposition of oil palm fronds naturally takes a long time which is around 3-4 months. This study will analyze the feasibility of utilizing corn meal as a compost material for oil palm fronds, corn meal is used as an energy source for microorganisms to accelerate the decomposition of oil palm fronds. This research was conducted in the greenhouse of the Agricultural Agribusiness College of Agriculture (STIPAP) Medan. When the research was conducted for 3 months, from March to May 2019. Palm oil fronds composting is 50 kilograms with a production cost of Rp 1,121,308 and a total income of Rp 1,200,000. The net profit of making oil palm frond compost is Rp. 78,692. BEB the price of making palm oil compost is Rp. 22,426 while the selling price of compost is Rp. 24,000. The BEP of producing oil palm fronds compost obtained is 47 kilograms while the amount of production of oil palm frond compost making is 50 kilograms so it can be interpreted that BEP production of oil palm frond composting is profitable because the amount of production of BEP production is greater. R / C ratio, which is the ratio of total receipts with total production costs has an R / C value of 1.07, then the R / C value can be greater than 1, it can be interpreted that the R / C value of making compost makes a profit. B / C ratio, which is the ratio of profits to total production costs has a B / C value of 0.07, thus the B / C value is smaller than 1. Then it can be interpreted that the B / C value of making compost does not benefit or is not feasible to run in the production of 50 kilograms. Keywords: palm fronds, compost, corn meal, break event point

Abstract

In this study, it was found that the younger generation plays an important role in the management of palm oil plantations to assist in the inclusivity of sustainable development through positive palm oil campaigns. The urgency of involving the younger generation is necessary to face sustainability challenges. Although sustainability is a primary focus in the palm oil industry, the involvement of the younger generation in the management of plantations is still limited. This research aims to understand the involvement and perceptions of the younger generation as oil palm farmers in the good practices of sustainable oil palm plantations. The implementation of research in the provinces of North Sumatra and Aceh. The research sample consisted of 384 oil palm farmers. The research method is a case study with descriptive qualitative data analysis techniques using SPSS Version 22. The analysis results show that only 37,24% of palm oil farmers are young, under 45 years old, while more than 62,76%, are involved in good palm oil plantation practices, >45 years old. Their perception is also known to fall into the category of poor (score of 54) regarding good practices in palm oil plantations. The main issue is the unfavourable demographic structural changes for the agricultural sector, where the number of elderly farmers (over 55 years old) is increasing, while the workforce of young people is decreasing. The phenomenon of aging farmers and the declining interest of young labor in the agricultural sector is becoming more pronounced.

Abstract

Waste is a problem in various big cities, one of which is Medan City. Organic waste that is wet and causes foul odor needs to be dealt with quickly. One method of managing organic waste is by processing it into compost. Compost made from organic waste is very easy because it does not require a large area, a lot of equipment and costs. This community service activity aims to empower housewives through education and composting trials as an independent alternative for them to overcome household waste that can be used to make organic fertilizer that can be used alone or sold for a source of household income. The activity was carried out by the Institut Teknologi Sawit Indonesia team consisting of lecturers and students together with partners, namely housewives in Batang Kuis Village, Deli Serdang, totaling 75 people. Activities were carried out in June 2024. The method implemented in this empowerment program is a participatory method starting from education and socialization, practical application of composting, and monitoring of fermentation results while stimulating partners to be able to process waste independently which has the opportunity to produce products of economic value to increase family income. The results of this service activity achieved a score of 97% because the team succeeded in educating partners and motivating them to process waste using the composting method and reduce the burning process or piling up garbage waiting for the janitor to pick up the garbage. This activity is expected to continue for partners by continuing to provide assistance to housewives in Batang Kuis Village so that it becomes a partner business unit to increase family income.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in Rumah Galuh Village, Sei Bingai sub-district, Langkat Regency. The Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) demonstration was carried out for 1 day and was attended by local residents with the aim of making people aware that liquid organic fertilizer is an alternative to chemical fertilizer. Apart from being environmentally friendly, POC can also be made by yourself by utilizing the natural wealth in their village. The problem with the Galuh house community is chemical fertilizers whose prices are unaffordable because chemical fertilizers, which can be categorized as expensive to buy, make people lazy to fertilize their plants. Bamboo shoots are one of the natural resources that can be used as POC. Bamboo shoots are a material that can be used as organic fertilizer because they contain organic materials and other ingredients that can increase plant growth. Bamboo shoots contain the hormone gibberalin, phosphorus 59mg, calcium 13mg, iron 0.5mg, potassium 20.12mg. The content of the gibberalin hormone and these nutrients will be useful in stimulating the growth of oil palm seedlings and possibly reducing the dose of NPK fertilizer used when fertilizing oil palm seedlings. PKM ITSI MEDAN students conducted socialization to the Rumah Galuh community about procedures for making POC. The benefits of POC itself can support the development of environmentally friendly agriculture, and can produce materials that are free from chemical content and become an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers.
