Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed eating habits, leading to an increased reliance on online food delivery. It's crucial to comprehend the diet quality and food choices among female users during this period. Objective: This study aims to explore the association between diet quality score and the food choice motives among female online food delivery users during the COVID-19 pandemic Methods: This online cross-sectional study involved surveying 405 female users recruited through consecutive sampling. The Food Choice Values Questionnaire (FCVQ) was utilized to understand their food choices, while nutrient intake and diet quality were assessed using the Nutrient-Rich Food 9.3 Index Score (NRF 9.3). Subsequently, the collected data underwent both univariate and multivariate analyses. Potential biases might arise due to time constraints during the pandemic and reliance on self-reported online data. Moreover, the method used to measure nutrient intake might not be ideal for this demographic, lacking tailored tests. Nonetheless, it’s important to highlight that the survey underwent prior validation among Indonesian adults, affirming its broad applicability. Results: Female users showed low average NRF 9.3 scores (241.67), indicating poor diet quality. Their prioritized food choice motives were also low. Significant associations surfaced between NRF 9.3 scores and food choice motives—tradition (p<0.01, r: 0.229), comfort (p<0.01, r: 0.223), organic (p<0.01, r: 0.231), safety (p<0.001, r: 0.162), weight control/health (p<0.01, r: 0.171), and income (p<0.05). Conclusion: The NRF 9.3 score is likely to increase when there are higher scores for tradition, comfort, and organic factors, and when income exceeds the minimum regional wage.

Abstract

Background: About 41% adults in Kalimantan have inadequate total fluid intake (TFI), which is higher than national inadequacy (28%). Inadequate TFI may cause dehydration. The biggest barrier to comply with TFI is to forget to drink. Smartphone application, Hidrasiku with reminder, is expected to be useful in TFI adequacy which may affect hydration status. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of the Hidrasiku with reminder on the TFI adequacy and hydration status among adults in Bontang. Methods: The design of this study was quasi-experimental and cluster sampling. Inclusion criteria were healthy men, age 19-64 years and having a smartphone. Participants suffering with diseases that affected fluid balance and on diet and fluid restriction were excluded. Data collection was conducted from April to June 2023 in Bontang. A total of 106 participants were allocated into two groups, intervention and control. Both groups used Hidrasiku for four weeks, with the intervention group activating the reminder while the control group didn’t. Adequacy of TFI and hydration status were assessed before-after intervention. Results: A sample of 87 participants completed the study. The median age of the participants was 32 (19-61) years. At the end of intervention, there was significant difference in the TFI adequacy (90.2% vs 63.0%; p=0.003) and a significant increase in TFI +240 mL/day vs – 62.8 mL/day; p=0.002). Meanwhile no significant difference on hydration status (87.8% vs 73.9%; p=0.103). Conclusions: Hidrasiku with reminder has effect on the TFI adequacy and no effect on hydration status

Abstract

Introduction: Dadiah is a fermented milk product derived from the milk of West Sumatran swamp buffaloes.  Methods: The manufacture of dadiah pudding used dadiah fermented milk obtained from Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. Levels of carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, zinc, and iron were measured according to the Indonesian National Standard, then total calories were determined using 4:4:9 kcal/g conversion. Inoculation of samples on de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe agar was performed to determine total lactic acid bacteria counts, and Gram staining was done for further morphological confirmation. Results: The result revealed that 100 g dadiah pudding contained 6.49 g of carbohydrates, 6.12 g of protein, 23.31 g of fat, 260.23 kcal of calories, 276.61 mg of calcium, 3.75 mg of zinc, 6.60 mg of iron, and 6.1 × 10⁹ CFU/ml of lactic acid bacteria assuming that modification of the liquid into pudding form has been shown to impact macronutrient, micronutrients, total calories, and total lactic acid bacteria. Conclusion: The nutrient content in dadiah pudding revealed in this study indicates that this dairy product can be used as a nutritious local food source and a potential probiotic.

Abstract

Background: Adequate nutrition during the early years of life is necessary for good growth, development, and long-term health outcomes. The first 1000 days of life are a critical time for nutrition. Aims: This literature review aimed to evaluate the role of growing up milk on growth, stunting, and anemia prevention of under-five children. Methodology: This study used a literature review approach, searching three databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane. The inclusion criteria in this literature review were 1) randomized clinical trials, systematic review, and meta-analysis, 2) studies conducted over the last 10 years, 3) available in full text, 4) written in Indonesian or English, and 5) Research studies conducted in humans. Result: We identified 3 publications, that matched the inclusion criteria and research aims, including 2 original articles from Lovell AL, et al and Cervo MCM, et al, and 1 meta-analysis by Brooker PG et al. Fortified milk (GUM) consumption significantly had a positive impact on nutritional status, especially growth and hemoglobin status (anemia). Conclusion: Fortified milk (GUM) consumption is a solution to macro-micronutrient adequacy in under five children. More efforts are needed to conduct studies in Indonesia on GUM and address specific nutrients that may promote linear growth, reverse stunting and anemia in children.

Abstract

Anaemia is a serious public health concern for Indonesian children under the age of five, with a prevalence of more than 20% according to the last national health survey in 2023. Iron deficiency accounts for over half of anaemia cases, causing delayed cognitive development, weakened immune systems, and poor overall health outcomes. Inadequate dietary intake, a poor socioeconomic level, and a high prevalence of infectious diseases exacerbate the situation, necessitating targeted nutritional therapy and public health initiatives to address this prevalent issue of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA).

Abstract

Tuberculosis causes decreased appetite and hypermetabolism, disrupting protein breakdown and synthesis, leading to malnutrition. Proteins, as the primary source of amino acids, support immune cells and help prevent malnutrition and susceptibility to other infections. The intensive phase of tuberculosis therapy is crucial for enhancing immune defense, reducing the bacterial load, and decreasing energy expenditure, thereby increasing body weight.

Abstract

Mothers introducing solid foods (other than breast milk) to their babies (aged 6 to 23 months) rely heavily on nutrition labels when selecting infant cereals. Therefore, it is crucial to identify maternal knowledge regarding iron and the factors influencing their intentions to purchase iron-enriched cereals using the theory of planned behavior. This information will assist in formulating maternal purchasing decisions for high-iron infant cereals. As the questionnaire has not been validated yet, it needs to be validated. Aim to validate the questionnaire to evaluate mothers' intention to buy iron-fortified cereal for children aged 6-23 months using the theory of planned behavior and iron-related knowledge questionnaires.
