Abstract

Pregnancy gingivitis remains a prevalent oral health problem among pregnant women, largely driven by hormonal changes and inadequate awareness of proper oral hygiene practices. Despite its high prevalence and potential complications, including heightened risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes, educational resources tailored to improving oral health knowledge during pregnancy are still limited and often ineffective. This study addresses this gap by examining the impact of the Android-based Mom Smile application as an accessible digital learning tool for enhancing pregnant women’s knowledge of pregnancy gingivitis. This research employed a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 32 pregnant women attending the Gayam Health Center in Sumenep Regency. Participants completed a validated knowledge questionnaire assessing their understanding of pregnancy gingivitis including its definition, symptoms, causes, impacts, and prevention before and after engaging with the Mom Smile application. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test due to non-normal distribution. The findings demonstrated a substantial improvement in knowledge following the intervention. The mean knowledge score increased from 54.68% in the pretest to 83.28% in the posttest. Prior to the intervention, 62% of participants exhibited low knowledge levels, whereas after using the application, 88% achieved high knowledge levels. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.05), indicating the effectiveness of the Mom Smile application. In conclusion, the Mom Smile application proved to be an effective digital educational tool for enhancing pregnant women’s knowledge about pregnancy gingivitis. Its motion-graphic–based content offers an engaging and practical alternative to traditional printed materials. Integrating such digital health education into antenatal care services may support better oral hygiene practices, thereby contributing to improved maternal health outcomes.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities often experience substantial challenges in understanding and performing effective oral hygiene practices, which contributes to a disproportionately high prevalence of dental caries and unmet dental treatment needs. Limited cognitive abilities, reduced motor skills, and low health literacy further hinder their ability to maintain proper oral hygiene. Addressing these gaps requires educational approaches that are accessible, engaging, and tailored to their learning characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Dental Joyful Learning video a short animated educational intervention on improving oral health knowledge among students with intellectual disabilities at SLB Paedagogia Surabaya. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed involving 20 students who met the inclusion criteria. Participants completed a structured Guttman-scale questionnaire before and after a single 3-minute video intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively and statistically using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to determine changes in knowledge. The findings demonstrated a marked improvement in oral health knowledge following the intervention. Prior to the video exposure, 75% of participants fell within the poor knowledge category, with an average score of 34%. After the intervention, 80% of participants reached the good category, with the mean score rising significantly to 83%. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), confirming a statistically significant increase in knowledge. In conclusion, the Dental Joyful Learning video proved effective in enhancing oral health knowledge among children with intellectual disabilities. The use of concise, visually engaging, and cognitively appropriate audiovisual media can serve as a practical and impactful educational strategy in special-needs settings. Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition that affects various aspects of health, including dental and oral health. Diabetes and periodontitis are the most prevalent human diseases. Diabetes worsens the periodontal condition, but periodontitis also hampers glycemic control in diabetic patients. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge of oral health maintenance and the incidence of periodontitis among elderly patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) at the Tanah Kalikedinding Health Center, Surabaya. The cross-sectional study involved 46 elderly participants diagnosed with T2DM. Data were collected using a dental and oral health maintenance knowledge questionnaire and the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). The majority of respondents were women (73.9%) aged 60-70 years (91.3%), with most having only a junior high school education (47.8%). Knowledge levels were generally low, with 54.35% of respondents classified as having poor knowledge. Most respondents (80.4%) had severe periodontitis, as indicated by CPITN scores. The Pearson correlation test revealed no significant relationship between knowledge levels and CPITN scores (r = -0.134, p = 0.374), suggesting that knowledge about dental and oral health maintenance does not significantly influence the incidence of periodontitis in this sample. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive interventions to improve dental and oral health among elderly T2DM patients, focusing not only on increasing knowledge but also improving access to dental care and promoting healthy lifestyle practices. These efforts are essential to reducing the prevalence of severe periodontitis in this vulnerable population.

Abstract

The objective this research aimd to ascertain the connection between understanding of oral health and actual mouth cleanliness stats of elderly patients at the Periodontics Specialist Clinic of RSGM Universitas Airlangga. An analytical survey with a cross-sectional method was used for this research. Through purposive sampling, a total of 54 individuals were selected to participate. The findings indicated that most of respondents had a middle level of knowledge regarding oral and dental hygiene, while most exhibited poor oral hygiene status. The Chi-Square test was conducted to the gathered data to examine the correlation between participants’ knowledge and their oral hygiene status. Nevertheless, the analysis revealed no significant association between understanding of oral health and actual mouth cleanliness stats among the elderly. This outcome is presumed to be due to the absence of behavioral data related to the respondents' oral hygiene practices. Consequently, it’s recommended that healthcare providers consistently offer education and counseling on oral and dental care to the elderly in order to enhance their oral health status.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Adolescents with intellectual disabilities have limitations in maintaining oral hygiene, placing them at a greater risk of oral health problems than their peers. This condition highlights the essential role of mothers as primary caregivers in fostering positive oral health maintenance behaviors through continuous motivation. This study aimed to analyze the effect of maternal motivation on the oral hygiene of adolescents with intellectual disabilities at SLB Alpa Kumara Wardhana II Surabaya. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 39 mothers and 39 adolescents selected using purposive sampling. Maternal motivation was assessed using a structured questionnaire, while the adolescents' oral hygiene status was measured using the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S). Data were analyzed using Spearman's rho correlation test. The findings indicated that most mothers had a moderate level of motivation, and the adolescents generally demonstrated a moderate level of oral hygiene. Statistical analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between maternal motivation and the oral hygiene status of adolescents with intellectual disabilities (p = 0.02; r = 0.485), indicating that higher maternal motivation was associated with better oral hygiene. The study concludes that maternal motivation plays an important role in supporting oral health maintenance behaviors among adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, strengthening parental education and empowerment should become an integral part of promotive and preventive oral health programs for children with special needs. ABSTRAK Anak remaja tunagrahita memiliki keterbatasan dalam menjaga kebersihan gigi dan mulut sehingga berisiko lebih tinggi mengalami gangguan kesehatan rongga mulut dibandingkan anak pada umumnya.
