Abstract

Cognitive decline poses a significant challenge for the elderly population globally. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of cognitive function and its associated factors among the elderly in the Indonesian family life survey’s fifth wave (IFLS-5) conducted from 2014 to 2015. The study included elderly individuals aged 60 and above, excluding proxy respondents and those with missing data. Various socio-demographic, cognitive function and health-related variables were analyzed, including age, sex, education level, marital status, residence, region, economic status, current employment, self-rated health status, happiness, sleep quality, depression, loneliness, and chronic conditions. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with cognitive functions among the 2,929 elderly respondents. The results revealed that 44.6% of the respondents reported poor cognitive function. In the unadjusted model, residence (OR: 0.81; 95%CI: 0.70–0.94), region of other islands (OR: 0.66; 95%CI: 0.54–0.81), sleep quality (OR: 0.53; 95%CI: 0.42–0.68), self-rated health status (OR: 1.38; 95%CI: 1.19–1.61), happiness (OR: 1.48; 95%CI: 1.22–1.79), and depression (OR: 1.22; 95%CI: 1.04–1.44) showed significant associations with cognitive function. After adjusting for confounding factors, the association remained significant for residence (OR: 0.77; 95%CI: 0.66–0.89), regions other than Java, Bali, and Sumatra (OR: 0.61; 95%CI: 0.50–0.76), self-rated health  (OR: 1.28; 95%CI: 1.09–1.51), happiness (OR: 1.30; 95%CI: 1.06–1.59), and sleep quality (OR: 0.60; 95%CI: 0.47–0.78). These findings emphasize the necessity of interventions aimed at enhancing sleep quality and overall health in order to preserve cognitive function among the elderly, thus potentially improving their quality of life. Implementing comprehensive health programs could significantly enhance the overall quality of life for the aging population, especially the elderly population.

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an escalating public health issue, particularly among the elderly. High salt intake is a modifiable dietary risk factor suspected to accelerate CKD progression. However, large-scale evidence from Indonesia remains scarce. This study investigates the association between salty food consumption and CKD among older adults in Indonesia. Using data from the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (Survei Kesehatan Indonesia/SKI 2023), we analyzed 97,339 individuals aged 60 and above. Descriptive statistics outlined participant characteristics, while chi-square tests and binary logistic regression assessed associations and adjusted effects. Statistical analyses were conducted using STATA 14.1, with significance set at p < 0.05. Among participants, 89.3% reported consuming salty foods, and CKD prevalence was 0.5%. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between CKD and sex, education, and salty food intake (p < 0.001). Multivariate results indicated that elderly individuals who did not consume salty food had significantly reduced odds of CKD (OR = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.54–0.90; p = 0.006), suggesting a protective effect. These findings highlight a strong association between salty food consumption and CKD risk in Indonesia’s aging population. Reducing dietary salt intake may serve as an effective, low-cost intervention for CKD prevention. Urgent public health strategies focusing on dietary behavior change and nutrition education for the elderly are needed to curb the rising burden of kidney disease.

Abstract

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a significant public health concern in Timor-Leste, with sociocultural norms, economic disparities, and partner behaviors contributing to its prevalence. Understanding the associated risk factors is crucial for informing prevention strategies. Purpose: This study aimed to examine sociodemographic and behavioral factors associated with severe IPV among women in Timor-Leste Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 3,694 women aged 15–49 years who participated in the 2016 Timor-Leste Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The outcome variable was self-reported severe IPV. Independent variables included age, marital status, education, household wealth index, place of residence, geographic region, and husband/partner’s alcohol consumption. Weighted logistic regression models were used to calculate crude and adjusted odds ratios (COR, AOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Severe IPV was significantly associated with being aged 25–34 (AOR = 1.74; 95% CI: 1.19–2.52), being unmarried/widowed/divorced (AOR = 2.56; 95% CI: 1.33–4.92), and having a partner who consumed alcohol (AOR = 2.41; 95% CI: 1.85–3.11). Higher education and better economic status were protective against IPV. Conclusions: Alcohol consumption by partners, lower education levels, and economic disadvantage are key risk factors for severe IPV in Timor-Leste. Policies targeting alcohol reduction, women’s empowerment, and tailored regional interventions are essential to mitigate IPV and its health impacts

Abstract

Increasing age will reduce the physiological functions of the body including muscle mass. The ability to synthesize muscle protein decreases due to a reduction in the number of muscle fibers and a decrease in muscle fiber size. This results in the loss of neurons, reducing muscle strength capacity. Decreased muscle strength limits the daily activities of the elderly, such as difficulty walking, climbing stairs, and lifting weights. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of upper and lower extremity muscle strength of the elderly in Griya Asih Lawang nursing home, Malang Regency. This descriptive study used 30 populations with a sampling technique that is total sampling. The variable in this study is the strength of the upper and lower extremities of the elderly measured using Manual Muscule Testing. Univariate data analysis, then the data is presented in a frequency distribution table. This research was conducted in June 2023 at Griya Asih Lawang nursing home, Malang Regency. The results showed that more than half of the respondents as many as 18 people (60%) had moderate muscle strength in the upper extremities and less than half as many as 13 people (43.5%) had low muscle strength in the lower extremities, and less than half as many as 13 people (43.5%) also had moderate muscle strength in the lower extremities. Elderly gymnastics efforts to prevent early muscle decline. Providing the right walking aids as needed in daily activities can minimize the risk of falls.
