Abstract

Some things can cause a person to have a dependence on using a computer just like office work or in terms of getting entertainment such as playing video games among adolescents. Some research leads to the duration of playing video games which is one of the risk factors of the MPS. The prevalence of MPS in general population varies by up to 85%. The method used in this study is an analytical observational method with a cross sectional approach. This study used simple random sampling techniques and the study subjects were observed with a one-time measurement of dependent variables. This research design was used to find out whether there was a relationship between the duration of playing video games and myofascial pain syndrome of upper trapezius muscle in adolescents in Denpasar City. The results showed from the total of 59 study samples, there were 46 samples (78.0%) who had upper trapezius MPS and as many as 13 samples (22.0%) who did not experience upper trapezius MPS. The distribution of research samples that experienced MPS was more in adolescents who had excessive duration of playing video games (>2 hours / day) which was 45 samples (76.3%) than samples who had MPS with a normal duration of playing video games (<2 hours / day). The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant correlation (p = 0.000) between the duration of playing video games and MPS of the upper trapezius muscle in adolescents in Denpasar City.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Aging is something that definitely happens and we can't avoid it but we can prevent it. The quality and quantity of muscle mass decreases with age. Sarcopenia is a decrease in muscle mass accompanied by a decrease in muscle strength. Muscle metabolism is influenced by many factors and signaling pathways. The level of IGF-1 plays an important role in maintaining the quality of skeletal muscle. Recent studies have shown that resistance training is essential for muscle development and increasing the efficiency of agonist and antagonist muscle groups. However, research on this topic varies greatly in terms of the frequency, intensity, duration, and type of exercise that builds IGF-1. The study was conducted using the literature method. We reviewed and compared the most recent journals discussing the relationship between sarcopenia and regular long-term physical exercise. Physical exercise with resistance training showed significant results for muscle strength and muscle mass in the elderly. High-resistance training has a major effect on increasing GH and cortisol. In conclusion, certain physical activities have a positive effect on muscle health that can be withdrawn by IGF1. Keywords: Sarcopenia; IGF-1; Resistance training

Abstract

As life expectancy increases and the population ages, effective interventions that promote long-term well-being and health are becoming increasingly important. Research results have proven that EMS can increase strength and muscle mass, so it is strongly suspected that EMS can be used to treat sarcopenia. This literature review summarizes various research results related to the use of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) as a possible treatment for sarcopenia in older adults. From various scientific references used, it was found that EMS have a positive role with sarcopenia, especially in improving the function of skeletal muscle. Low-frequency stimulation appears to be more effective at strengthening, whereas high-frequency stimulation appears to favor muscle mass gain. EMS also promotes changes in muscle fiber composition as well as Enhanced oxidative enzymatic activity and glucose uptake. Moreover, EMS increases muscle strength, maintains overall muscle fiber size (which decreases with aging), activates satellite cells, and ensures muscle adaptation. We can also speculate that EMS mimics the effects of endurance training, does not cause muscle damage, and activates molecular tissues similarly to resistance training. All of this data could be used to create therapeutic strategies for aging-related sarcopenia.

Abstract

Introduction: Exercise is well-known for its benefits to strengthen muscle and improves whole-body energy metabolism. Increased creatine kinase (CK) level in blood is an indicator of skeletal muscle damage induced by strenuous physical exercise. It is known that vitamin E plays a key role as strong antioxidant which can be considered as the solution to attenuate exercise-induced muscle tissue damage by reducing creatine kinase (CK) concentration. Method: The literature search was performed using several databases: Research Gate, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The following search terms were used: “exercise”, “vitamin e”, “creatine kinase”, “exercise-induced muscle damage” and “muscle soreness”. Results: There were 7 articles obtained and analyzed in this literature review which showed various results regarding the effect of vitamin E on creatine kinase (CK) level post-exercise especially in adult. Discussion: There were still inconsistence results of vitamin E which can decrease serum creatinine kinase after exercise. Some studies showed that 250 mg of vitamin E administration 1 hour before exercise were effective in reducing creatine kinase (CK) after moderate exercise. In contrary, another study revealed that there was no beneficial effect on creatine levels after administration of 235 mg vitamin E combined with 1000 mg of vitamin C 2 hours prior to exercise in runners over 30 years of age.
