Abstract

Introduction: Among the many risk factors for stress in the workplace, bullying is a factor that is rarely discussed. As many as 19% of people in America experience bullying at work, followed by other European countries. Bullying is a strong link to worker stress, especially in blue-collar workers. Gender differences, especially in women, also have an important prevalence in workplace bullying. In Indonesia itself, there is no data regarding bullying in the workplace, especially among women and blue-collar workers. Objective: This study aims to find the relationship between bullying and stress in the workplace among female blue-collar workers. Method: This research is a cross-sectional analytical study using a negative act questionnaire-revised (NAQ-R) questionnaire on work stress in female blue collar workers in garment factories, in Bekasi city, Indonesia. Job stress assessment uses the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) questionnaire. Other variables assessed are age, salary, marital status, and subjective questions related to workload and work communication. Results: A total of 379 female blue collar workers in garment factories, in the city of Bekasi, Indonesia took part in this research. Workplace bullying is associated with job stress in female blue-collar workers. Workers who are often bullied tend to have medium-high levels of work stress. Bullying is the type of bullying with the highest scale. Conclusion: Workplace bullying is the factor that has the most influence on work stress in female blue-collar workers. Then, high workloads, poor communication, and lower salaries are related to bullying and stress in the workplace.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: The global Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has created shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) including N95 respirator medical masks. Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is an effective way for disinfection of N95 masks before reuse. The UVGI chamber is an effective method of disinfection against SARS-CoV-2, however its effect on the N95 medical masks filtration ability is still uncertain. Purpose: To evaluate filtration effectiveness of N95 mask after repeated UV-C irradiation in the UVGI chamber. Method: This was a parallel two-group experimental study to see the effect of repeated UVGI exposure on the filtration of 2 types of N95 medical masks (type 8210 and 1860), with 25 pieces each group, using an aerosol particle counter, after 10 cycles of repeated UVGI exposure in the UVGI chamber of the ORL-HNS Department Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. Result: There were no significant differences in the filtration effectiveness of N95 medical masks after repeated UVGI exposure up to 10 cycles for 2 types of N95 masks and there was no significant change in the filtration ability of the N95 medical masks after repeated UVGI exposure. Conclusion: The filtration of N95 medical masks type 8210 and 1860 filtration were maintained >95% after repeated UVGI exposure with cumulative dose of 10,126-16.200 mJ/cm2 in UVGI chamber of ORL-HNS Department, Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. ABSTRAKLatar belakang: Pandemi Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) menyebabkan keterbatasan tersedianya alat pelindung diri (APD) termasuk masker respirator N95.

Abstract

Introduction. Respiratory disorders, which range from 1 to 100 μm, are a significant concern in the textile industry. Typical symptoms of cotton dust exposure include chronic cough with or without phlegm, painful breathing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and chest pain. While most research has focused on natural cotton fibers, there is a growing need to investigate the health risks associated with synthetic cotton dust, such as that derived from petroleum-based resources such as polyester. Method. This research employed a cross-sectional design, with 76 respondents. Result & Analysis. The results showed that 21.1% of the workers experienced respiratory symptoms, and 43.4% of the workers were exposed to high levels of synthetic cotton dust. Chi-square test analysis indicated a significant relationship between synthetic cotton dust exposure and respiratory symptoms (p < 0.001; OR 15.1 [3.17 – 73.21]). Discussion. Workers with high synthetic cotton dust exposure had a 15.1 times greater risk of experiencing respiratory symptoms than those with low synthetic cotton dust exposure.

Abstract

Background: E-learning readiness became a new workload for teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic because of the obligatory online teaching. E-learning readiness comprises four factors: the readiness of technology, innovation, people, and self-development; and it might cause job stressors and affect teachers' performance. The research objective was to explore job stressors that influence teachers the most and how they might be associated with E-learning readiness. Method: The cross-sectional method assessed 186 teachers from public and private elementary schools in the urban city area in Jakarta. The data obtained from questionnaires: Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI) Boyle and E-learning Readiness (ELR) Aydin and Tasci. TSI assessed teachers' job stressors in five main components: workload, student behavior, professional recognition, time and resources, and interpersonal relationships. Results: Most teachers perceived readiness at e-learning (84.9%). E-learning readiness was a profound problem for female and non-classroom teachers. The dominant job stressors for teachers were workload (27%), professional recognition (22%), time and resources (21%), and student behavior (21%). The number of students influenced workload and professional recognition. Self-development was the prominent e-learning readiness factor associated with teacher job stressors, especially professional recognition. Conclusions: In urban areas like Jakarta, fifteen percent of teachers remain unprepared for e-learning teaching. The unpreparedness was related to the female gender and non-classroom teachers, who need e-learning skills training to improve their readiness and control job stressors for better teaching performance in a prolonged pandemic situation.

Abstract

Introduction: According to the European Occupational Disease Statistics in 2016, as much as 38.1% of Occupational Diseases are Musculoskeletal Disorders. Research in 2013 on the electrical assembly industry in Thailand showed that the most common cause of upper extremity MDS is De Quervain syndrome (DQS) with a prevalence of 13.03%. Previous studies showed that occupational factors are very important as risk factors for DQS, in addition to individual factors. Caused by excessive use of the muscles around the fingers to the wrist, sustained repetitive movements, forceful manual exertion and prolonged static position. In manufacturing industry, the production process need to use tools, machines, and still requires workers for manual work activities and work processes that cannot be replaced by machines. Because manual handling is one of the occupational risk factors for DQS, it is necessary to study DQS in manufacturing industry. This study aims to determine the prevalence of DQS, identify, and analyze the relationship between manual handling and individual factors related to DQS.Method: This research method is a cross sectional using secondary data of PT K employees’ Medical Check-Up (MCU) in 2021. The samples used was all employee’s MCU data with total of 1244 samples. Independent variables include manual handling work factors and individual factors, include age, gender, and years of service. The dependent variable is the De Quervain Syndrome. The DQS was diagnosed with Finkelstein test. Results: A total of 1244 respondents were obtained, with the DQS prevalence 9%. In the analysis of the relationship between manual handling work factor and individual factors (age, sex, and years of service) showed that no significant relationship with suspected DQS in PT K workers. Whereas the multivariate analysis showed that there were no factors that most dominantly influenced DQS, with p>0.05. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between manual handling work factor and individual factors on suspected DQS.

Abstract

Background: Work-related Hepatitis B is a significant health issue among healthcare workers, especially those at high risk of needle stick injuries (NSI). Needle stick injuries can act as a transmission route for the Hepatitis B virus, which, if not adequately managed, may lead to serious complications. Evaluating the Hospital Occupational Health and Safety System (OHSS) is crucial to prevent similar incidents. This study aims to evaluate the OHSS system in a hospital for preventing workplace injuries and to analyze a case of Hepatitis B resulting from a needle stick injury in a sanitarian.Case presentation: A 37-year-old male sanitarian was diagnosed with Hepatitis B following a Medical Check-Up that revealed reactive HBsAg without clinical symptoms. The incident occurred in April 2021 when the patient was pricked by a used needle while handling medical waste without using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and without reporting the incident to the hospital’s occupational health unit. The patient had no history of Hepatitis B vaccination and was previously declared HBsAg negative during a 2020 medical check-up. Based on the analysis using the Seven Steps of Occupational Diagnosis, the incident was categorized as an Occupational Disease due to the failure of the OHSS system in preventing infections. Methods: This case report draws on clinical observations and a retrospective review of patient records, using the Seven Steps of Occupational Diagnosis framework to determine causal factors. Workplace safety protocols, including PPE availability and incident reporting processes, were assessed. The patient provided informed consent for the use of their data, with all identifying details removed to maintain confidentiality. Conclusion: Based on the evaluation using the managerial approach of OHSS, the Hepatitis B case in this sanitarian can be categorized as a work-related disease. The needle stick injury leading to Hepatitis B virus transmission highlights deficiencies in implementing workplace safety systems in the hospital. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening the OHSS system through regular training, adequate PPE provision, improved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and continuous monitoring to prevent similar incidents.

Abstract

Security officers require good physical fitness to perform their duties effectively. Maintaining this level of fitness often involves structured exercise programs that consider the frequency, intensity, duration, and type of activity. This study aims to examine the relationship between a structured physical exercise program, individual factors, and work-related factors on the physical fitness of security officers. This study was conducted in July 2023 and utilized company program data from March to June 2023, focusing on 67 security officers at PT X. Physical fitness data was collected using the Cooper test method and analyzed using SPSS. Data normality was assessed using the skewness/standard error method, with values <2 considered normally distributed. A paired sample t-test revealed a significant relationship between Cooper test distances before and after participation in the structured exercise program (p<0.001). Further analysis demonstrated relationships between changes in physical fitness and several factors: work fatigue (p<0.001), work stress dimensions (specifically work overload, role conflict, quantitative and qualitative workload excess, career development, and responsibility to others, all with p<0.014), and sleep quality (p<0.001). The coefficient of determination (r2) was 0.496, indicating that work fatigue, role conflict, and sleep quality collectively explain 49.6% of the variance in physical fitness changes. The remaining variance is likely influenced by factors not included in the model. Multivariate analysis confirmed that work fatigue (p<0.001), role conflict (p=0.036), and sleep quality (p=0.015) were predictors of changes in physical fitness. In conclusion, a structured physical exercise program has a positive influence on the physical fitness of security officers. Furthermore, work fatigue, work stress (particularly role conflict), and sleep quality are associated with changes in physical fitness among these officers.

Abstract

Basal cell carcinoma (BC) is a malignant neoplasm of non-katinized cells in the basal layer of the epidermis, is locally invasive, aggressive, destructive, and rarely metastasizes. KSB is more common in the elderly. The etiopathogenesis associated with KSB is genetic, environmental, and most commonly ultraviolet light exposure. Clinically, there are five types of SCI, namely nodular, superficial, morpheaform, pigmented, and Pinkus fibroepithelioma. Early detection of skin cancer can be done by skin self-examination (SAKURI). The purpose of this study was to determine clinical signs as predictors of basal cell carcinoma in traditional rubber farmers. Through 7 steps of occupational diagnosis, it can be concluded that the diagnosis of Basal Cell Carcinoma in patients is related to their work as traditional rubber farmers. Appropriate definitive and non-medicamentous management and patient compliance can restore the patient's health condition with a good prognosis.

Abstract

Introduction: Emotional mental disorder (EMD) is a state of psychological distress that, if not handled properly, can lead to severe mental disorders. One potential psychosocial hazard that is thought to be related to mental health disorders is work-family conflict (WFC). The issue of family-work balance has become an important issue among Indonesian female workers, especially with the rapidly growing female worker society and the strong family culture. This study aimed to identify the association between work-family conflict and emotional mental disorder in female nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 264 female nurses who work at national referral general hospital in Jakarta. Their emotional mental disorder was measured using Self-Reported Questionnaire 20 (SRQ-20) and the work-family conflict was measured using the Work-Family Conflict Scale (WCFS). Results: The prevalence of emotional mental disorder in female nurses was 23.5%. The most dominant factor associated with emotional mental disorder is work-family conflict (OR 2,40, CI 95% 1,32-4,35, p=0,004). Conclusion: There is a significant association between work-family conflicts and emotional mental disorders in female nurses in Indonesia. Nurses with work-family conflicts are more likely to have emotional mental disorders. Regular mental health checks and counseling should be performed along with periodic health checks.
