Abstract

This research analyses the role of millennials in the development of urban farming in Malang Regency, representing an area with high urban farming potential in Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach through an explanatory survey design, the study involved 210 millennial farmer respondents (aged 25-40) from 33 sub-districts in Malang Regency. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale and analysed using PLS-SEM with WarpPLS 8.0. The model tests the relationship between five exogenous variables: Digital Technology Competency (X1), Entrepreneurial Ability (X2), Technical Knowledge (X3), Sustainability Awareness (X4), and Ecosystem Support (X5), and Local Food Resilience (Y), with Innovation Adoption (M) as a mediator. The main findings show the model is excellent (R² = 0.937) with all hypotheses significantly confirmed. Entrepreneurial ability has the strongest influence (β=0.42, p<0.05), followed by Digital Technology Competence and Ecosystem Support (β=0.36), Sustainability Awareness (β=0.31), and Technical Knowledge (β=0.25). Innovation adoption is proven to be an effective mediator, especially through Ecosystem Support (β=0.65, p<0.01). The research identified two innovative models: the NFT Vertical Hydroponic System and the IoT-based Smart Greenhouse Integrated Farming, which achieved 90% water efficiency and produced premium products. The significance of the research lies in its theoretical contribution regarding the role of millennials in food security and its practical implications for the development of national agricultural policy. The findings can be replicated in other urban areas of Indonesia with similar demographic and geographic characteristics, providing a blueprint for sustainable urban farming development to strengthen national food security.

Abstract

Saga Village, Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara has a traditional house that becomes its identity, namely Sa’o. Unlike ordinary traditional houses, Sa’o has a customary leader in each house. Thus, the house is not just a place to live but also shows the social hierarchy. Visually, the floor plan is a square with a very steep roof angle so that the roof is visible. The philosophy follows the analogy of the human body, that is, lewu (pedestal/ foot), one (wall/ body), gara (roof/ head). On the macro scale, the Saga settlement pattern follows the contour pattern. There are about 20 houses with the same typology. The use of space in cultural activities is not yet identified. Besides, the position of the contoured landscape without shade and surrounded by forests has a vulnerability to several diseases. The link between space use and environmental health also has not yet been explained. Continuing from previous research on space cosmology, the micro aspect in this study deals with the physical identification of traditional houses. In contrast, in the macro aspect, it discusses the use of space for cultural activities and aspects of environmental health. The data collection was carried out through focus group discussions (FGD) and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. The results of this study are descriptions of spaces used for cultural activities at a particular time and place as well as efforts to improve public environmental health. In conclusion, Saga people have local wisdom in terms of traditional architecture, in addition to the intangible form of inherited traditions and efforts to improve environmental health.

Abstract

The Tenggerese community in Ngadas Village, Malang Regency, is renowned for its traditional ceremonies that utilize various plant species as ritual media. Over time, continuous use without conservation threatens the sustainability of these plants. This study aims to identify the types, functions, meanings, and growing requirements of ceremonial plants and to propose a front yard landscape model integrating these plants as a form of cultural landscape-based conservation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through literature review, in-depth interviews with local elders and government representatives, and field observations. The results identified 26 ceremonial plant species, such as Cordyline fruticosa, Imperata cylindrica, and Gigantochloa apus, each with unique symbolic functions. Three typologies of front yard spaces were found: large (6x8 m), medium (3x6 m), and small (1x5 m), serving as the basis for adaptive landscape modeling. The modeling was developed using SketchUp, Lumion, and Adobe Photoshop. The study concludes that integrating ethnobotanical ceremonial plants into residential front yards can promote their conservation while visually reinforcing the cultural identity of the Tenggerese people.

Abstract

This research analyzes the impact of marketing innovation on the economic sustainability of urban farming in Malang City. Urban farming has become an innovative solution in addressing issues of food security, the utilization of limited land, and the economic empowerment of urban communities. Using a quantitative approach, this research involved 86 urban farming practitioners selected through purposive sampling. The independent variables studied include product innovation, price innovation, and distribution innovation, while the dependent variable is the economic sustainability of urban farming. Data analysis using multiple linear regression shows that the three independent variables partially and simultaneously have a positive and significant effect on the economic sustainability of urban farming. Product innovation is the most dominant factor with a regression coefficient of 0.419 and a beta value of 0.517, followed by price innovation (coefficient 0.421, beta 0.307) and distribution innovation (coefficient 0.272, beta 0.211). The regression model has a coefficient of determination (R²) value of 0.713, indicating that 71.3% of the variation in the economic sustainability of urban farming is explained by these three independent variables. These findings indicate the importance of innovative approaches in marketing strategies to support the economic sustainability of urban farming in Malang City.
