Abstract

Upcycling is a part of the broader concept of Sustainable Development. Based on statistical data from Asosiasi Semen Indonesia (ASI), the growth of cement production capacity in the last ±5 years from 2020 to 2024 (may) has increased. Judging from the increase in cement production, more cement bag waste will be generated. This research aims to develop environmentally friendly material products with sustainable ideas that optimize the characteristics of cement bag paper waste to have functional and economic value. The product produced is a fashion item, specifically a bag. This research uses a mixed-method approach with product design methods based on design thinking, exploration, and experimentation. This research shows that cement bag waste can be made into upcycled products that have functional and economic value, one of which is made into a bag. The motif coloring technique used is the Suminagashi technique which produces unexpected elements of color and beauty and becomes an aesthetic value in the resulting motif. However, the bag products produced are not 100% environmentally friendly because there are additional complementary components in a bag

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution not only facilitated extensive natural resource exploitation but also introduced concepts like “harmonization of nature,” ethnic development, and global migration. Among the groups affected was the Tionghoa ethnic community, which migrated from Asia to the West, including Indonesia (Nusantara), while carrying their cultural heritage. The Tjong A Fie Mansion in Medan, Indonesia, serves as a significant architectural artifact, reflecting the principles of Traditional Chinese Architecture Philosophy. This study explores how the mansion embodies these principles, conveying messages and meanings within its architectural patterns. Employing an interdisciplinary approach rooted in cultural studies, this research incorporates the Feng Shui Ba Zhai framework. The methodology includes: 1) collection and classification of data related to the mansion’s cultural and architectural context; 2) analysis and interpretation of its structural elements; and 3) conclusions regarding the messages and meanings conveyed by the architecture. The findings reveal that the Tjong A Fie Mansion utilizes key elements—such as dividing walls, jian (rooms), axis alignment, space orientation, and courtyards—aligned with Feng Shui Ba Zhai principles. Ultimately, this study highlights how cultural messages are preserved through architecture, emphasizing the mansion’s significance as a historical and cultural legacy.

Abstract

Interactive Media as a Visual Educational Tool to Raise Awareness of People-Pleaser Issues Among University Students in Jakarta. People pleaser behavior refers to an individual's tendency to prioritize others' needs over their own in order to gain social acceptance. This pattern often appears unconsciously among university students, particularly those in the process of identity formation and seeking social belonging. The lack of awareness regarding the psychological impact of this behavior highlights the need for an educational communication strategy that resonates with youth. This study aims to design a social campaign using interactive visual media to increase student understanding of the people pleaser issue. The research adopts the Design Thinking approach, comprising five key stages: problem identification, definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing. A survey conducted among students in Jakarta revealed that most respondents were unfamiliar with the term, yet exhibited common characteristics of the behavior. Based on these findings, a campaign titled NoThanks was developed in the form of a short educational video and talk show, distributed via Instagram and YouTube. The campaign is designed to deliver information in a reflective, emotionally engaging way. Through this visual and communicative approach, the campaign aims to foster greater awareness and encourage students to establish healthier personal boundaries in their everyday social interactions.
