Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti apakah ada peningkatan pada kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif. Sasaran penelitian sebanyak 29 siswa di SMPN 23 Bandar Lampung. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai alat untuk pengambilan data. Data tersebut dianalisis menggunakan paired sample t-test. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan secara statistik dalam jenis teks prosedur yang ditulis oleh siswa setelah siswa diajar menggunakan teknik picture sequence. Dapat disarankan bahwa teknik picture sequence memungkinkan siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan dalam menulis teks prosedur.The aim of this study was to find out whether there was an improvement of students ability of writing procedure text. This research was a quantitative research. The subjects of this research were 29 students at SMPN 23 B andar Lampung. The writing test was administrated as the instrument of the research. The data were analyzed by paired sampe t-test. The results showed that there was a statistically significant improvement of the procedure text written by the students after they were taught through picture sequence technique. The findings suggest that picture sequence technique enables students to improve their ability of writing procedure text.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada peningkatan kemampuanmenulis siswa setelah diajarkan dengan menggunakan video dan untuk mengetahuiaspek apakah yang paling meningkat dengan menggunakan video dalam pengajaranprosedur teks writing. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa daripretest adalah 69,50 dan nilai rata-rata siswa dari posttest setelah pelaksanaan denganmenggunakan video adalah 83,64, di mana terjadi peningkatan 14,24. Peningkatantertinggi dicapai dalam vocabulary (28,72%) dari 14,86 hingga 18,92. Masing masing,aspek organization 14.84 hingga 17.59, aspek content dari 20.20 hingga23.85, aspek grammar dari 16,10 hingga 18,88 dan mechanic dari 3,5 hingga 4,4. Halini dibuktikan oleh hasil Paired Sample T-Test, yang menunjukkan bahwa nilai daridua nilai akhir signifikan kurang dari ? (0,00 0,05). Berdasarkan hasil di atas, dapatdisimpulkan bahwa video dapat meningkatkan prestasi penulisan procedural textsiswa.This research was aimed to find out whether there is an increase of students writingachievement after being taught by using video and to find out what aspect of writingincrease the most. The result showed that the students mean score of the pretest was69.50 and their mean score of the posttest after the implementation by using videowas 83.64, in which the improvement was 14.24. The highest improvement wasachieved in vocabulary (28.72%) from 14.86 up to 18.92. Respectively, organizationaspect 14.84 up to 17.59, content aspect from 20.20 up to 23.85, grammar aspect from16.10 up to 18.88 and mechanic from 3.5 up to 4.4. It was proven by the result ofPaired Sample T-Test, which showed that the value of two tail significant was lessthan ? (0.00 0.05). Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is an improvement of the students‟ ability in identifying non-literal meaning of narrative text after being taught through CTL. The population of this research was the second grade of SMA Negeri 3 Bandar Lampung. There were seven classes of the second grade and each class consisted about 30 students. The researcher took XI social 3 as the experimental class. The study employed one group pretest and posttest design and the students were given three treatments. The researcher analyzed the data using repeated measure t-test. The mean score of pretest increases from 57.78 up to 85.83 in the posttest, and the gain score is 28.05. The result of t-test indicates that the significant (2-tailed) value is 0.000 (p0.05, p=0.000). The result of hypothesis testing shows that t-ratio (18.449) is higher than t-table (2.042). It can be concluded that there is a significant increase of students‟ ability in identifying non-literal meaning of narrative text after being taught through CTL.  Keywords: contextual teaching learning, improvement, narrative text, non-literal meaning

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk meneliti apakah suffix dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan kosa kata siswa dan menentukan aspek kosa kata mana yang paling meningkat. Sampel penelitian ini adalah XI IPS 1 SMAN 1 Way Lima sebanyak 29 siswa. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif yang menggunakan one group pretest posttest design. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan penguasaan kosa kata siswa setelah pengajaran suffix. Data menunjukkan bahwa t-value lebih tinggi dari t-table (16.1242.048). Ini berarti bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada penguasaan kosa kata siswa setelah diajarkan suffix. Grammar of word adalah aspek dari kosa kata yang kenaikannya tertinggi. Hasil analisa menunjukkan bahwa pengajaran suffix dapat meningkatkan kemampuan kosa kata siswa. Berdasarkan hasil dari penelitian, peneliti menyarankan guru Bahasa Inggris untuk menerapkan suffix dalam mengajar kosa kata karena dapat membuat penguasaan kosa kata siswa lebih baik.This research was intended to investigate whether or not teaching suffixes could be used to increase students vocabulary mastery and which aspect of vocabulary increased the most after being taught through suffixes. The sample was class XI social 1 of SMAN 1 Way Lima consisting of 29 students. This study was quantitative research which used one group pretest posttest design. Repeated measure t-test was used to analyze the quantitative data and the hypothesis testing was computed using SPSS version 16.0. The result showed that t-value is higher than t-table (16.1242.048). It means that there was a significant increase of students vocabulary masteryafter being taught by using suffixes. Grammar of Word is the aspect of vocabulary that increased the most. The analysis of result showed that suffixes can increase students vocabulary mastery. Based on the finding, the researcher suggests the English teacher to implement suffixes in teaching vocabulary because it can make students vocabulary mastery better.Keyword: grammar of word, suffixes, vocabulary mastery, teaching suffixes.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi pembelajaran bahasa yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa Thailand dalam memperlajari Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil dari data penelitian menemukan bahwa strategi belajar yang dipakai oleh mahasiswa Thailand dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris lebih rendah dari pada bahasa Indonesia. Dari hasil ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajar bahasa akan menggunakan strategi pembelajaran yang berbeda pada seting yang berbeda pula. Seting pembelajaran yang tidak formal akan dapat memberikan kesempatan yang lebih untuk memberikan pembelajaran yang alami dari pada pembelajaran formal. Oleh karena itu, guru bahasa Inggris sebaiknya menjadikan strategi pembelajaran bahasa sebagai bahan pertimbangan dalam menyusun materi pengajaran dan latihan bahasa agar pembelajaran bahasa dapat lebih dioptimalkan.The objective of this research is to investigate the language learning strategies used by Thai students in learning English and Indonesian. This research used the descriptive qualitative method in collecting and analyzing the data. The result showed that average mean score of the use of language learning strategies in English is lower than in Indonesian and there are significant differences in language strategies used by the Thai students in learning English and Indonesian. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students used different language strategies in different setting. The informal setting in which language learning can naturally happen will give more chance for language learning to use language strategies than in formal setting. Therefore, it is better for English teachers and the students to consider the use of the language learning strategies and design the teaching instruction and activities based on the use of language learning strategies so that the teaching learning process can be optimized.Keywords: language learning strategies, learning english, learning indonesian.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui strategi meminta dan kesantunan yang muncul dalam tindak tutur meminta. Penelitian ini menggunakan role play sebagai media untuk mendapatkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada 17 ujaran yang termasuk ke dalam tindak tutur meminta. Berdasarkan strategi tindak tutur meminta, satu ujaran (5,9%) termasuk ke dalam strategi memberikan isyarat, stategi pernyataan saran, pernyataan akan kebutuhan dan pernyataan akan kewajiban, empat ujaran (23,5%) termasuk ke dalam mempertanyakan kemampuan dan kesediaan pendengar dan meminta izin, dan lima ujaran 29,4%) termasuk ke dalam strategi perintah. Berdasarkan strategi kesantunan, tiga ujaran (17,6%) termasuk ke dalam strategi bald on-record dan strategi positive politeness, sepuluh ujaran (58,8%) termasuk ke dalam strategi negative politeness dan satu ujaran (5,9%) termasuk ke dalam strategi off-record. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa kecenderungan strategi meminta adalah dalam bentuk perintah. Sementara itu, strategi kesantunan cenderung muncul dalam bentuk strategi negative politeness.This research was to find out request and politeness strategy in EFL interaction. This research employed role play in data elicitation technique in collecting the data. The result showed that there were 17 utterances contained request and politeness strategies were used by participants. Based on request strategy one utterance (5.9%) belonged to hint strategy, statements of need, obligation and suggestory formulae, four utterances (23.5%) belonged to questioning listeners ability and willingness and asking for permission and five utterances (29.4%) belonged to imperative strategy. Based on politeness strategy, there were three utterances (17.6%) belonged to bald on record and positive politeness strategy, ten utterances (58.9%) belonged to negative politeness and one utterance (5.9%) belonged to off record strategy. It showed that the tendency of the request strategy was in the form of imperative strategies. Meanwhile, the politeness strategy tended to appear in the form of negative politeness strategies.Keywords: acts of request, politeness strategy, request strategy

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk mengetahui apakah online reading dan discussion boards pada facebook sebagai kegiatan pre-writing dapat meningkatkan kualitas writinglebih baik daripada kegiatan pre-writing melalui printed text reading, aspek writing apa yang meningkat secara signifikan dan persepsi siswa terhadap ORDB. Pada desain quantitatif, uji tes awal dan tes akhir kelompok kontrol dilakukan dan pada desain qualitatif, kuesioner dilaksankan.Pada pengumpulan data, teswriting, analisa dokumen, dan kuesioner digunakan. Subyek dibagi dua kelompok, eksperimen dan kontrol, masing-masing terdiri dari 17 siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukan nilai signifikan dua arah 0.000. Berdasarkan aspek writing yang meningkat secara signifikan, ORDB meningkatkan kualitas writing terutama pada vocabulary. Siswa meningkat pada vocabulary dengan penambahan 1.62 (8.1%) dengan pre-writing melalui printed-text reading dan 3.06 (15.3%) dengan ORDB. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perbedaan pada kedua kegiatan pre-writing. Berdasarkan kuesioner, diketahui bahwa metode ini dapat meningkatkan motivasi dan partisipasi dalam menulis.This research was conducted to find out whether online reading and discussion boards on facebook as pre-writing activities can improve writing quality better than pre-writing activity through printed text, what aspects of writing significantly improved, and the students perception of ORDB. In quantitative design, control group pre-test and post-test design was conducted and in qualitative design, questionnaire was conducted. To collect the data, the writing test, document analysis, and questionnaire were used. The subjects were divided into two groups, the experimental and control, each consists of 17. The result showed the value of two-tailed significance was 0.000. Based on the aspects of writing which are significantly improved, ORDB promoted their writing performance mainly in vocabulary. Students improved vocabulary with gain 1.62 (8.1%) with pre-writing through printed text and 3.06 (15.3%) with ORDB. The result showed the difference of both pre-writing. Based on questionnaire, it was noted that it may increase motivation and participation in writing.Keywords: Discussion Boards, Facebook, Online Reading, Pre-writing.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out whether teaching using realia can develop students’ descriptive text writing ability at the second year of SMPN 2 Bandar Mataram. The quantitative data (students’ score) was used to see the students’ ability in writing descriptive text (learning product). The subject of the research was the students of class VIII.A in the academic year 2012/2013.Pretest and post test experimental design was used in this research. Pre-test and post-test were administered to measure students’ ability in writing descriptive text before and after treatments. The scoring system was based on five aspects; they are content, organization, vocabulary, grammar and mechanic. The result shows that there is an increase of students’ ability in writing descriptive text after treatments using realia as media. It can be concluded that teaching using realia increased the ability of students in writing descriptive text. Therefore, the writer suggests to English teacher to apply realia as one of the alternative ways to increase the students’ descriptive text writing ability.  Keywords:descriptive text, realia, writing ability.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mencari tahu apakah pembelajaran berdasarkan Natural Approach mampu meningkatkan pencapaian menulis siswa. Penelitian ini menerapkan desain kuantitatif kuasi-eksperimental dengan grup pre-test post-test yang hanya satu. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan di dalam pencapaian itu. Mempertimbangkan penemuan ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa aktifitas-aktifitas itu menguntungkan untuk siswa dalam hal pencapaian menulis. Oleh karenanya, guru dan perumus kurikulum diharapkan melihat Natual Approach sebagai pendekatan yang seharusnya dipertimbangkan, terutama jika tujuannya adalah membuat pencapaian menulis siswa lebih baik. Namun demikian, harus dicatat bahwa, dikarenakan keterbatasan yang dimiliki penelitian ini, penelitian yang lebih jauh perlu dilaksanakan, terutama, penelitian yang berkaitan dengan penerapan jangka panjang dari Natural Approach, skill dan level lainnya.This research aimed at finding out if Natural Approach facilitates students to improve their writing achievement. It applied the quasi-experimental quantitative design with the single-group pretest-posttest. The result showed that there was a statistically significant improvement of the writing achievement with the significant level 0,05. This indicates Natural Approach is beneficial for students in terms of writing achievement improvement. Therefore, the teachers and curriculum formulators are expected to perceive Natural Approach as an approach that should be taken into account, particularly if the purpose is to make students’ writing achievement better. Nevertheless, it should be noted that, due to the limitations of this research, some further research needs to be conducted, in particular, the research with respect to the long-term application of Natural Approach, other skills, and levels.Keywords: Natural approach, writing achievement, writing skill.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah kombinasi Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah dan Proses Menulis dalam mata pelajaran menulis mempengaruhi pencapaian siswa dalam menulis atau tidak dan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap penerapan Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah dan proses menulis dalam mata kuliah menulis. Penelitian ini melibatkan 31 mahasiswa mata kuliah pra-lanjutan menulis di Universitas Lampung. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti mengadakan tes menulis, penyebaran kuisioner dan melakukan observasi. Data-data tersebut kemudian dianalisa secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah dan proses menulis dalam mata pelajaran menulis mempengaruhi pencapaian siswa dalam menulis setelah mendapatkan pengajaran selama empat hari. Sedangkan untuk hasil persepsi siswa terhadap penerapan Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah dan proses menulis dalam mata kuliah menulis menunjukan bahwa lebih dari 80% mahasiswa setuju dengan pernyataan bahwa Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah membantu mahasiswa dalam menghasilkan ide-ide untuk mulai menulis.This study was aimed finding out whether PBL and writing process combination in EFL writing class affect the students writing achievement or not and the students perception towards the implementation of PBL and writing process combination in EFL writing class. The study involved 31 Pre- Intermediate writing students of Lampung University. To collect the data, the researcher administered several instruments. They were writing tests, distributed questionnaire, and did observation. Then, the data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that PBL and writing process combination affected the students writing achievement after getting treatment for four days. Besides, for students perception toward the implementation of Problem-Based Learning showed that more than 80% students agreed with the statement which described that PBL helped the students in generating their ideas to start their writing.
