Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze theoretically about the effectiveness, efficiency and attractiveness of picture series of learning vocabulary in English language skills. Based on theory and research findings from various journals, vocabulary is a centralin language skill so it is important to learn. The researcher used research and development method because the resulting product is the development of pictures that have already existed and were often used in the process of English speaking skill.The using of picture series in the learning process will increase student motivation in speaking English especially to add their vocabularies. So the learning process becomes more active. Based on the result of this research it can be concluded that the using of the picture series is effective and efficient to improve students' English speaking skill.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis secara teoritis tentang efektivitas,efisiensi dan daya tarik media gambar seri dalam pembelajaran penguasaan kosakata pada keterampilan berbahasa Inggris.Berdasarkan teori dan penelitian dari berbagai jurnal,kosakata merupakan pusat dalam keterampilan berbahasa sehingga sangat penting dipelajari.Peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian dan pengembangan karena produk yang dihasilkan merupakan pengembangan dari media gambar yang sudah ada dan sering digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris.Penggunaan media gambar seri dalam proses pembelajaran,akan meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggristerutama untuk menambah kosakata mereka.Proses pembelajaran menjadi lebih aktif dan motivasi belajar siswa meningkat dengan pengalaman pembelajaran yang faktual. Berdasarkan penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan media gambar seri efektif dan efisien untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa.Kata kunci: media gambar seri, kosakata, efektif

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada pemahaman membaca siswa setelah diajarkan dengan menggunakan tekhnik small group discussion. Penelitian ini dilakukan dikelas IXB yang berisi 26 siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan one-group pretest posttest design. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman siswa membaca teks anecdote dengan menggunakan tekhnik small group discussion meningkat. Nilai rata-rata siswa mencapai 13.61, di mana nilai rata-rata siswa pada pretest adalah 51.80 menjadi 65.42 pada posttest. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan pada pemahaman membaca siswa setelah mereka diajarkan dengan menggunakan teknik small group discussion.The aim of the research was to find out whether there is any significant increase of students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using small group discussion technique. The sample of the research is IXB that consisted of 26 students. The research uses one-group pretest posttest design. The result shows that the students’ reading comprehension of anecdote text by using small group discussion technique increased. The gain of the students’ mean score of pretest and posttest was 13.61 where the students’ mean score was 51.80 in the pretest and 65.42 in the posttest. It can be concluded that there is a significant increase of students’ reading comprehension achievement after they were taught by using small group discussion technique.Keywords: anecdote text, reading comprehension, small group discussion

Abstract

Nowadays, although speaking has been taught from Elementary school to Senior High School, many students are still incapable of speaking in English well. This may be caused by the limitation of opportunity to practice it or psychological factors. One of the factors that make the students fail to learn English is due to their low of motivation. As it is known, motivation is one of the factors that can influence the students‟ ability in learning language. This research is quantitative. The design used was expost-facto design. It was conducted at SMPN 19 Bandar Lampung and the participant was class VIII F consisting of 36 students. However there were two students who didnot take part in the study, so the research participants were 34 students only. In collecting the data, the writer applied the questionnaire for measuring the students‟ motivation and subjective test for speaking. Based on the result of this resarch, it is concluded that there is a significant correlation between students‟ motivation and their English speaking ability. Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah flashcard dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan pencapaian kosakata siswa dan untuk menganalisis pelaksanaan pembelajaran melalui flashcard. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua MTs. Penelitian ini menggunakan Pretest Posttest Satu Kelompok dan para siswa diajar sebanyak tiga kali. Data di analisis menggunakan t-test Pengukuran Berulang. Nilai rata-rata pada pre-test adalah 55,65 meningkat menjadi 74,04 pada post-test. Hasil t-test menunjukkan bahwa t-ratio lebih tinggi daripada t-table (16,183 2,069) dengan signifikan level p 0.05 dan signifikan 2-tailed p = 0.000. Dapat dikatakan bahwa flashcard dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan pencapaian kosakata siswa. The aim of this research is to find out whether flashcard can be used to improve the students’ vocabulary achievement and to analyze the implementation of teaching vocabulary through flashcard. The population of this research was the second grade students of MTs. The researcher took VIII D as try out class and VIII as the experimental class. This research used One Group Pretest Posttest Design and the students were given three times treatments. The data were analyzed by using Repeated Measure t-test. The mean score in pre-test was 55.65 improve to 74.04 in post-test. The result of t-test showed that t-ratio was higher than t-table (16.183 2.069) with the level of significant was p 0.05 and significant 2-tailed was p = 0.000. It can be said that flashcard can be used to improve the students’ vocabulary achievement. Keywords: flashcard, improve, vocabulary achivement.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis masalah siswa dalam menemukan main idea dan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap tes membaca dalam menemukan main idea. Subjek penelitian ini adalah kelas VIII A MTsN 1 Kotabumi. Peneliti menggunakan tiga instrumen pengambilan data: tes membaca, wawancara dan kuesioner. Hasil dari tes membaca menunjukan bahwa hanya ada 5 siswa yang mendapat nilai 61-70 dan 8 siswa yang mendapat nilai 31-40. Berdasarkan hasil yang didapat dari wawancara terdapat 6 masalah yang siswa temukan dalam menemukan main idea: kurangnya minat siswa, kurangnya pengetahuan kosa kata, kalimat yang panjang, miskin strategi membaca, kebingungan tata bahasa, dan tidak tahu bagian paragraf. Hasil dari kuesioner dapat disimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas VIII A masih kesulitan dalam menemukan main idea karena mereka tidak mengetahui arti dari main idea dan banyak kata-kata sulit yang membuat mereka bingung untuk menemukan main idea pada teks bacaan. This research was intended to analyze the students’ problems in finding main idea and to trace the students’ perception toward a reading test in finding main idea. The participants were class VIII A MTsN 1 Kotabumi. The researcher used three data collecting techniques: reading test, interview, and questionnaire. The result of reading test showed that there were only 5 students who got score 61-70 and 8 students who got score 31-40. Based on the result of interview there were six students’ problems faced in finding the main idea: lack of students interest, lack of vocabulary knowledge, length of the sentence, poor reading strategy, grammatical confusion, and ignorance of paragraph component. The result of questionnaire can be concluded that the students class VIII A still get difficulties in finding main idea because they do not know what main idea is and many difficult words make them confused to find main idea of reading text.Keywords: main idea, problems, reading

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out whether guiding questions technique can be used to improve the students’ ability to write recount text significantly and to find out which aspect improved the most significantly after the students were taught using guiding questions. This research was an experimental study. Two raters were employed in this research. They were the English teacher and the researcher. The population of this research was 275 students of first grade of SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung in 2018/2019 academic year. The sample of this research was class X MIA 6 of SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung consisting of 25 students. This research used one group pretest posttest design and the data were analyzed using Paired t-test. The average score of the pre-test was 55.12 and the average score of the post-test was 70.24.  Keywords: writing ability, recount text, guiding questions

Abstract

 Abstract: The major objective of this research was to find out whether or not scanning technique could be used to develop students’ reading comprehension achievement significantly. The students were given four treatments. As the instrument of the research, reading test comprising of multiple choice test that were administered in both pretest and posttest.The data was computed using SPSS version 15.0 at the level significant .05. According to the calculation of t-test, the result shows that there is significant increase on students’ reading comprehension after being taught through scanning technique (p.05, p=.000) which can be seen from the mean score of pretest 46.27 and that of post test 66.67 with the increase 20.40. It indicates that scanning technique is effective to increase the students’ reading comprehension achievement. In conclusion, the students’ reading skill especially in identifying the specific information increases through scanning technique as the technique in teaching reading comprehension. Besides, the students in the class seemed to be more active and more attentive in the process of teaching learning by using scanning technique.  Keywords: identifying specific information, one group pretest posttest design, scanning technique,

Abstract

This research aims to find out the students’ difficulties faced in comprehending English reading text and to know the factors of contributing to the students’ difficulties in comprehending English reading text. Furthermore, in this research used a descriptive qualitative study. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading test and interview. The data were analyzed based on five classifications to find out students' difficulties in reading comprehending and four factors of contributing to the students’ difficulties. The result of this study showed that there were difficulties were faced by students in their reading, namely determining main idea 63 mistakes (16.4%), understanding vocabulary 89 mistakes (23.1%), making inference 88 mistakes (22.9%), locating reference 86 mistakes (22.3 %), and detail information 59 mistakes (15.3%). In addition, based on students' interview result, the factors of contributing to the students’ difficulties in comprehending English reading text were students’ background, vocabulary problem, sentence problem, and rhetorical structure. In this case, by knowing the students’ difficulties in comprehending English reading text, the English teacher should learn better and be more creative in applying the techniques of teaching reading skill. Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out whether there is any correlation between students’ learning strategies and text types in students’ reading comprehension; and to investigate which learning strategy is mostly applied by students in reading. The design of this research is a co-relational study of ex post design. The sample of the research was class VIII B consisting of 30 students. The result shows that there is a correlation between students’ learning strategies and text types in students’ reading comprehension with rxy are 0.416 (on descriptive text) and 0.403 (on recount text) with N 30 at  = 0.05 while rtable is 0.3494. Thus, rxy rtable; meaning that there is correlation of the two variables which are categorized as moderate correlation. Another result shows that metacognitive strategies are mostly applied by students in reading. It has been found that the mean of cognitive learning strategies is 32.1; metacognitive strategies is 32.33; and socio-affective strategies is 28.5. The researcher suggests that the English teacher should apply metacognitive strategies in teaching reading comprehension as one of alternative strategies especially because it has been found that the strategy can make them successful in learning reading. Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah terdapat peningkatan dalam kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa setelah diajar menggunakan teknik pembelajaran kolaboratif: Think-Pair-Share dan Co Op Co Op dan untuk melihat persepsi siswa terhadap kedua teknik tersebut. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMPN 11 Kotabumi, Lampung Utara pada semester pertama tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dan kualiatif. Tes menulis diberikan untuk melihat peningkatan menulis teks deskriptif siswa. Untuk menemukan persepsi siswa terhadap kedua teknik tersebut, peneliti menggunakan pengamatan dan wawancara. Berdasarkan hasil analisa data, kedua teknik pembelajaran kolaboratif membantu meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa. Kemudian, berdasarkan hasil pengamatan dan wawancara, para siswa menunjukkan perilaku yang positif. Mereka merasa nyaman dan lebih percaya diri dalam mengerjakan tugas secara berpasangan maupun berkelompok.The objectives of this research were to find out whether there is any improvement of students descriptive writing after being taught through collaborative learning techniques: Think-Pair-Share and Co Op - Co Op and to find out what the students perceptions on both techniques are. This research was conducted at SMPN 11 Kotabumi, North Lampung at the first semester of 2016/2017 academic year. The researcher used quantitative and qualitative approaches. In order to see the students descriptive writing improvement, the writing tests were administered. Then, to find out the students perceptions, the researcher used observation and interview. Based on the data analysis, the two collaborative learning techniques were helpful to improve the students descriptive writing. Then, based on the observation and interview the students showed positive attitude. They felt enjoyable and more confident to do the task in pairs and groups.Keywords: collaborative, co op co op, think-pair-share.
