Abstract

Schizophrenic patients in family members makes the family helpless and unable to care for them. Patient, family, social environment, and health service factors can affect the family's ability to care for schizophrenic patients. The aims of this study are to analyze factor predictors of the family's ability to care for schizophrenic patients. This study used a correlational study design. The sample of this study is 135 schizophrenic families in the outpatient clinic of Dr. Amino Gondohutomo Regional Psychiatric Hospital with purposive sampling. The instruments in this study are the questionnaire which developed and modified from the experience caregiving instrument (ECI), inner resource scale (SAS-I), mental health inventory (MHI), Berkeley Expressivity Questionnaire, Barthel Index, caregiving tasks in caring for an adult with mental illness scale (CTiCAMIS). Data were analyzed using a multiple regression test. The result shows the family's ability to care for schizophrenic patients predicted by the variables of family resources (p-value=0.019) and social support (p-value=0.0.32). Family resources as the strongest predictor of the family's ability to care for schizophrenic patients (B=0.242). It is necessary to develop integrated family empowerment interventions that increase and activate the family's inner resources.

Abstract

Hypertension is often found in primary health care facilities and if not followedup can develop into a more serious disease such as myocardial infarction, stroke, kidney failure and can cause death. Health services for non-communicablediseases such as hypertension depend not only on diagnoses and medicalinterventions but also require environmental support and collaboration betweenhealth workers and patients and their families. The effort to fulfill family healthcare tasks in the current era of modernization is one of them by utilizinginformation and communication technology which is the media to bridgecommunication between health workers and the community. The purpose of thisstudy was to determine the family support of hypertensive patients. The numberof samples in this study was 100 families of hypertensive patients. Samplingusing purposive sampling technique. This research was conducted in theSukoharjo Community Health Center area. Analysis of this study using univariateand frequency distribution. The results showed that the average family supportfor hypertensive patients was emotional support of 14.62, award support 20.03,instrumental support 25.67 and informational support 14.57. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the majority of family support forhypertensive patients is in a fairly good category so it needs to be increased again to carry out family empowerment activities. The results of this study can be used as a reference in determining appropriate interventions in increasing family support for hypertensive patients.

Abstract

Background: The high incidence of hypertension among older adults requires the efforts of healthcare workers to prevent complications that can worsen the condition. Hypertension can also lead to anxiety and depression due to a combination of factors, such as a physiological decline in physical condition. One of the non-pharmacological therapies considered for reducing blood pressure, anxiety, and depression is slow stroke back massage (SSBM). Objectives: The study aimed to examine the effectiveness of SSBM in reducing blood pressure, anxiety, and depression among older adults with hypertension. Methods: This study utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The research was conducted in March 2023 with 50 respondents aged 60-74. Aneroid Sphygmomanometer, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS) were used for data collection. Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests were used to analyze data. Results: The SSBM therapy in the experimental group was effective compared to the standard therapy in the control group in reducing blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. Conclusion: SSBM therapy is an effective complementary therapy for reducing blood pressure, anxiety, and depression in older adults. Therefore, it can be utilized as a preventive measure against complications that may arise in the older adult population.

Abstract

Introduction: Before the pandemic, older people actively participated in an integrated health service post named POSYANDU. This high participation is due to community health workers who understand their role in realizing basic health services. During the pandemic, POSYANDU must be held with attention to developments in the COVID-19 case. Methods: We implemented the online-based service of integrated health posts to provide online health services for older people. This paper explains the participation of elders, family, and community health workers in the revitalization strategies of integrated health service activities for older people during the pandemic. The activities included health assessments via telemedicine (video call), drive-thru services for vital signs assessment and simple lab checks, home visits, and education via WhatsApp as needed. The implementation began in June 2020 and in May 2021 with 184 older people in some places in Central Java, including Semarang City, District of Semarang, and District of Batang. We also worked with teaching volunteers consisting of five community health workers and 19 nursing students in the community. Results: The results of these activities were the findings of health problems experienced by the elderly during the pandemic (depression, hypertension, and joint stiffness), increased knowledge, and physical activity of the elderly group. The 100 older people participated in online exercise activities accompanied by their families. They felt a decrease in complaints of joint stiffness, and 84 older adults participated in health education and exercise activities in open areas by implementing strict health protocols. Most participants said they were satisfied with Pol-Sadar activities as a health service strategy for older people during the pandemic. Conclusion: In conclusion, the online program was effective as a strategy of health services for the elderly, especially during the new normal era, and increased the participation of family and community health workers, but it needs adequate devices to participate.

Abstract

Schizophrenia relapse occurs due to the family's inability to care for and modify the environment at home. This occurs due to low knowledge of family care, not being taken to mental health services, refusal of treatment from patients, and high emotional expression in the family environment. This study aimed to analyze the ability of family caregivers to prevent relapse of schizophrenia. Quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was 70 families who are caregivers of schizophrenia at the health center in Semarang City with a purposive sampling technique. Instruments in the form of a questionnaire developed from several concepts and tested validity reliability again.  Data analysis using Spearman rank correlation with 95% significance. The results showed that there was a strong and unidirectional relationship between the family's ability to care for schizophrenia and relapse prevention (p=0.000, r=0.628). The better the family's ability to care, the better the relapse prevention efforts made. Mental nurses can provide repeated education and training to improve family knowledge of caring for schizophrenia at home.

Abstract

Background: Multisensory stimulation in the elderly helps train cognitive function and motor skills by incorporating elements that stimulate their senses. The application of a multisensory room caters to sensory stimulation identified for individuals experiencing cognitive decline from moderate to severe and those with neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's, Dementia, and Alzheimer's. Objective: This study aimed to assess needs to develop a multisensory room design tailored with a Javanese cultural approach for the older adults. Methods: A plan for a multisensory room was made involving experts in gerontic nursing, design, and interior space design. Qualitative data collection utilized the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) technique. FGD was employed to comprehend factors associated with the necessity of a therapeutic room for the elderly, especially concerning the functionality of the multisensory space. Additionally, the FGD sought to identify Javanese cultural elements applicable to the room concept. Participants in the FGD included geriatric nurses, representatives from Alzheimer's Indonesia, Javanese cultural experts, architects, and Health Service members. The analysis of FGD results was conducted using the Colaizzi method. This involved creating transcripts from the FGD, multiple readings of the transcripts, extracting significant statements, validation with participants, and formulating meaningful themes, sub-themes, and categories. The themes identified during the data analysis were integrated and presented as research outcomes. Results: Two themes emerged from the analysis: aspects that need to be considered when creating a multisensory room and the elements in a multisensory room. Conclusion: By addressing the demand for innovative elderly health services and collaborating with stakeholders in developing spatial models, this study anticipates the creation of applicable and beneficial space designs. This endeavor aims to validate the effectiveness of the applied concepts in line with evolving health needs, particularly concerning the elderly population.
