Abstract

Kecinan Beach is one of the beaches on Lombok Island with many tourism activities. The activities in Kecinan Beach can influence the water quality, as the waters may receive waste from surrounding areas, leading to potential pollution or a decline in water quality. Phytoplankton are living organisms that can indicate whether a water body is polluted, which can be marked by changes in the community structure of phytoplankton, particularly in abundance and diversity. Water quality based on phytoplankton diversity as a bioindicator in Kecinan Beach has not been reported. This study was conducted to analyze the water quality of Kecinan Beach based on phytoplankton diversity as a bioindicator. Samplings were carried out in 9 sites in 3 stations during the month of March to June 2024. Samples were collected using a plankton net of 20µm mesh size. Samples were preserved in 4% formalin preservation and laboratory observation was conducted in the biology laboratory of FMIPA University of Mataram. The study identified 56 species from  3 classes, 21 families and 30 phytoplankton genera. The phytoplankton abundance in the coastal waters of Kecinan Beach was 126.667 ind/L. The species dominance index of phytoplankton of coastal waters of Kecinan Beach was 0.258, indicating no species dominance to each other. Rhabdonema arcuatum was identified as the highest (158%) species importance value. The species diversity index of phytoplankton of the coastal waters of Kecinan Beach was a moderate category. Based on the species diversity index, it can be said that the waters of Kecinan Beach are not polluted.

Abstract

Microplastics are small particles <5 mm produced from plastic waste. The plastic waste thrown in the sea, As a result, microplastics have increased and are widespread almost throughout the sea surface, including Tanjung Luar Fish Landing and East Lombok Regency. Microplastics are very dangerous for human health due to microplastic contamination in feather clams, which are often consumed by the local community.  Microplastics in the shellfish body can accumulate from the food chain and enter the digestive system. This study aims to determine the presence and characteristics of microplastics in feather clams (Anadara antiquata) at Tanjung Luar Fish Landing, East Lombok Regency. The research method used was descriptive quantitative. Samples of feather clams obtained from Tanjung Luar Fish Landing were separated from their shells. The clam meat was added with 10% KOH to destroy organic matter. The sample was incubated in a water bath until it was homogeneous. The sample was filtered using a 250 µm sieve. The filter results were dried with a dryer at 40˚C. Samples were identified with a microscope. The results showed microplastic contamination in feather clams from Tanjung Luar Fish Landing. Microplastic particles found were 59 particles with fibre types, as many as 47 particles, films 9 particles, and fragments 3 particles; there were 4 types of colours: black, clear, red and green. The dominant microplastics found were of the fibre type. Feather clams contaminated with microplastics harm human health, including metabolic disorders.

Abstract

Climate change and excessive anthropogenic activities have an impact on coral reef damage. Coral reef damage can be seen from several criteria, one of which is the percentage of live coral cover. North Lombok is one of the districts on Lombok Island whose coral cover has been damaged.  This research aims to identify marine biota, coral reef genus, analyze community structure and condition of coral reefs at Mentigi Beach. Coral reef genus data was taken using Coral Finder 2.0 Indo Pacific by Russel Kelley, while coral reef data was obtained using the UPT (Underwater Photo Transect) method at three stations with depths of 1-5 meters and 6-10 meters. The results showed that live coral cover at stations I, II, and III were 12.44%, 17.42%, and 32.46%, respectively. At a depth of 1-5 meters, it was found to be 21.93%, and 19.62% at a depth of 6-10 meters. There are 11 benthic categories, and 30 coral reef genera identified. The Porites genus is cosmopolitan in the research location. The diversity, evenness and dominance indices show that coral reef genera are evenly distributed with no one dominating the coral reef ecosystem at Mentigi Beach, Pamenang, North Lombok Regency.

Abstract

Mollusks are an important group of marine organisms that contribute significantly to marine ecosystem structure and function, exhibiting high species diversity and widespread distribution across various marine habitats. Medana Beach, located in North Lombok, is a coastal area with ecological potential as a habitat for mollusks, particularly bivalves and gastropods. However, excessive exploitation beyond sustainable limits has led to a decline in mollusk populations, due to rates of harvest surpassing their natural regeneration. This study aims to assess the species diversity and community structure of mollusks (Bivalvia and Gastropoda) in the intertidal zone of Medana Beach. A purposive sampling method was used to select stations based on differing environmental characteristics, while transects were laid using systematic random sampling. Mollusk sampling, environmental parameter measurements (temperature, salinity, and pH), and substrate identification were carried out at all three study stations. A total of 55 mollusk species comprising 1,052 individuals were recorded, including 14 bivalve species and 41 gastropod species. The bivalves belonged to 9 families, and the gastropods to 17 families. The highest infaunal abundance was observed at Station 3 (616.67 ind/m³), while the highest epifaunal abundance occurred at Station 1 (15.38 ind/m²). Modiolus philippinarum had the highest infaunal density (255.56 ind/m³), found attached to seagrass roots in muddy-sand substrates. Cellana radiata had the highest epifaunal density (6.13 ind/m²), found attached to rocks. The mollusk community structure at Medana Beach was relatively stable, as indicated by moderate diversity and evenness indices, with no dominant species observed. These findings suggest that the habitat conditions at Medana Beach are capable of supporting mollusk communities and are not currently experiencing significant ecological stress.

Abstract

Seagrass is a flowering plant thriving in shallow sea waters and estuaries. Seagrass ecosystems are essential in supporting life in shallow seas as primary producers, biota habitats, sediment trappers, and nutrient trappers. Environmental factors affecting seagrass growth include temperature, salinity, pH, and substrate. The study was conducted in March-June 2023. This study aimed to determine the type and condition of seagrass beds in the waters of Siwak Bay. The method used in this study is the quadrant transect method at three research stations. There are seven types of seagrass identified, namely Thalassia hemprichii, Halophila ovalis, Cymodocea rotundata, Cymodocea serrulata, Halodule pinifolia, Halodule uninervis, and Syringodium isoetifolium. The percentage of total seagrass cover is at a value of 37%-61%, indicating that the condition of seagrass beds in the waters of Siwak Bay is included in the unhealthy category. The highest species density found at station III in Halodule pinifolia was 483.5 stands/m², and the lowest was found at stations II and III in Thalassia hemprichii and Cymodocea serrulata with 0 stands/m². The average density value of seagrass beds in the waters of Siwak Bay is very dense. The highest type frequency was found in Cymodocea rotundata, with a value of 2.53. The tallest species diversity and diversity index was found at station II with values of 1.56 and 0.8, respectively. In contrast, the highest dominance index was found at station I, with a value of 0.44.

Abstract

Various natural resource utilization activities on the coast of Gerupuk Bay can potentially affect the quality of the aquatic environment, both biotic and abiotic, one of which is mollusc biodiversity. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the existence of Mollusca biodiversity and water quality and substrate in Gerupuk Bay. This study used a quantitative descriptive method of determining stations using the purposive sampling method based on differences in community activities at each station. Sampling was conducted at three stations, including Mollusca samples and water quality measurements: salinity, pH, temperature, and substrate. Molluscs in Gerupuk Bay found 55 species of Mollusks representing three classes, namely the Gastropoda class, with as many as 44 species incorporated in 22 Families; the Bivalve class, as many as ten species contained in 6 Families; and the Scaphopoda class, with as many as one types incorporated in 1 Family. The composition of Mollusca classes found on the Gerupuk Bay Coast is Gastropoda class at 62%, Bivalve class at 35%, and Scaphopoda class at as much as 3%. Mollusca diversity is calculated using the Shannon-Wienner diversity index (H'). The diversity index results ranged from 2.890-1.998, with moderate categories at all stations. Bioindicators of water quality using the diversity index show that stations I and III categorize the Gerupuk Bay area as lightly polluted. In contrast, at station II, it is moderately polluted.

Abstract

Rivers are water bodies in open ecosystems where activities in the environment have an impact on river water quality. Monitoring of water quality is necessary to preserve aquatic resources. One of the river basins on Lombok Island is the Jangkok River. This river has a high utility, so water quality monitoring is needed. Macroinvertebrates are one of the best biological indicators for water quality monitoring. The objective of this study is to determine the diversity of macroinvertebrates and the quality of Jangkok River waters by using macroinvertebrates as bioindicators so that the results of this study can be used as a reference basis for the future use of Jangkok River water in the allocation of community needs. The method used in this research is biomonitoring with macroinvertebrate bioindicators, and the technique used in sampling is purposive sampling. Sampling was conducted at three stations, namely the upstream, middle, and downstream parts of the Jangkok River. The data analysis used was the Family Biotic Index (FBI) supported by physical-chemical parameters. The results of this study showed that the macroinvertebrates identified were 721 individuals consisting of 5 classes, 17 orders, and 36 families. The water quality of the Jangkok River, based on the FBI value in the upstream and middle sections, is still included in the good category, while in the downstream section, it falls into the very bad category.
