Abstract

This study aims to analyze Qur'an Surah Al-Isra’ verse 16 using a thematic exegesis approach and Fazlur Rahman’s double movement theory, and to contextualize it within contemporary environmental exploitation in Indonesia, particularly illegal logging and deforestation. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a document-based study, analyzing the Qur'an, classical and contemporary tafsir literature, and relevant environmental studies. The findings reveal that the concept of al-mutrāfīn refers not only to those who live in luxury but also to elites who possess structural power and influence within society. When such power is not accompanied by moral and spiritual responsibility, it leads to collective deviations resulting in social and ecological destruction. In the Indonesian context, the exploitation of natural resources reflects the pattern of al-mutrāfīn, where elite dominance contributes to deforestation, social inequality, and increased ecological disaster risks. Therefore, Surah Al-Isra’ verse 16 contains universal moral principles that serve as a normative framework for understanding the relationship between power, environmental exploitation, and societal collapse. This study highlights the importance of integrating Qur'anic ethical values into natural resource governance to achieve ecological justice and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This research stems from the awareness that the modern environmental crisis is not only ecological but also spiritual and theological. Nature, which should be a sign of Allah's greatness, has been exploited due to an anthropocentric view that places humans at the center of reality. The Qur'an contains fundamental ideas about the relationship between God, humans, and nature based on tauhid (monotheism), balance, and moral responsibility. This research explores the concept of ecotheology in the Qur'an through maudhu'i (thematic) exegesis using a theological and ethical approach. The steps include collecting verses about nature and the environment, analyzing contexts based on classical interpretations such as al-Ṭabarī and al-Qurṭubī, as well as modern interpretations like al-Mishbah and Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur'ān. Data are analyzed qualitatively to find the theological construction of ecology. The hypothetical results indicate that the Qur'an presents an ecotheological paradigm that positions nature as kauniyyah verses (cosmic signs), not objects of exploitation. Humans as caliphs (vicegerents) have a spiritual responsibility to maintain the balance of Allah's creation. Qur'anic ecotheology rests on four pillars: ecological tauhid, responsible caliphate, ecological trusteeship, and mīzān (balance). These four pillars form an Islamic environmental theological framework for solving the contemporary ecological crisis

Abstract

This study contributes to strengthening ecological tafsir discourse and offers practical implications for education and environmental awareness based on Islamic values. The growing environmental crisis has prompted renewed interest in religious approaches to ecological sustainability. While previous studies have discussed Islamic environmental ethics, limited attention has been given to the ecological implications of Qur’anic cosmology in contemporary tafsir. This study investigates the ecological meaning of cosmological verses in the Qur’an through the interpretation of M. Quraish Shihab and examines their relevance to current environmental concerns. Using a qualitative library research design, data were collected from Tafsir Al-Mishbah and related academic literature, then analyzed through thematic and interpretive approaches. The study finds that Quraish Shihab’s interpretation emphasizes three interconnected ecological principles: mīzān (cosmic balance), khalīfah (human stewardship), and the prohibition of fasād (environmental destruction). These principles position humans as morally responsible agents in preserving ecological harmony. The analysis further shows that Qur’anic cosmology functions not only as a theological explanation of the universe but also as an ethical framework for environmental responsibility. The study demonstrates the relevance of ecological tafsir in addressing contemporary environmental challenges from an Islamic perspective.
