Abstract

This study covers the pragmatics equivalence and violation maxims in the Divergent novel. Classifying the forms of Grice maxim violations and describing the pragmatic equivalence of violation maxims in the Divergent novel are the objectives of this study. It is a qualitative paper that examines violation maxims and pragmatic equivalence in the novel Divergent. The data were direct-utterances infraction maxims in English and Indonesian. There are two types of data analysis techniques employed in this study. The analysis began with a document review, followed by an evaluation of the translation's quality based on pragmatic equivalence. As a result of the research, the following findings were discovered: 139 data were classified as violation maxims. The majority of the results (45,32.4%) involved violations of the quality standard. Second, based on the qualitative parameter of pragmatic equivalence, a total of 137 out of 139 data points were deemed "accurate translation" and  two out of 139 (1,43%) data might be regarded as "less accurate translation." This investigation uncovered no translations that may be deemed inaccurate.

Abstract

Factually, there is a development of the times, so that learning resources also experience development. Entering this new era, educators in particular are required to be creative with the process, not the result. In the 21st century, educators also need to be equipped with abilities, knowledge, and skills in order to achieve optimal learning goals. The development of science is currently in line with the learning process needed in 21st century skills. The skills needed in the 21st century include students being able to be more creative, think critically, be able to communicate well, and be able to work together. So to stimulate these skills, educators must carry out fun activities and use learning resources that are in accordance with learning objectives. Nature is a place to gain knowledge. Children also gain valuable experience from their play activities. Fun play activities can make children feel happy and motivated from the experiences they get. In the development of science, learning resources that can be used are loose parts. Loose parts are a play area that is static and can also be fairly stiff that children usually face on a daily basis. The loose parts area is an environment that can be changed, moved around according to the wishes and imagination of a child, so that when children interact using loose parts media, children can be categorized as entering the world of problem solving abilities and creative thinking. Keywords: Loose Parts, Learning Resources, Science Development Secara faktual, adanya perkembangan zaman, sehingga sumber belajar pun mengalami perkembangan.

Abstract

Reef fish are one of the biota that are sensitive to environmental changes. Their abundance and diversity are supported by good coral reef conditions. This makes them a bioindicator of coral reef conditions. This study aims to examine the diversity of reef fish, ecological indices, and conditions of coral reef benthic substrates in Sorong City waters from September to November 2024 at ten research stations using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) and Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) methods. The study found 174 species of reef fish from 26 families (107 major, 55 target, and 12 indicator). The diversity (H') and evenness (E) indices were moderate to high at 1.59-3.41 and 0.41-0.89, respectively, and dominance (C) was low at 0.04-0.48. PCA analysis showed that hard coral cover (HC) as the main determinant of reef fish community structure correlated with the families Pomacentridae, Chaetodontidae, Scaridae, Pempheridae, and Blennidae. This finding is important for marine resource management and conservation in the waters of Sorong City.   Ikan karang merupakan salah satu biota yang peka dengan perubahan lingkungan. Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition remains a persistent challenge for EFL learners across different educational systems, making effective learning strategies essential for academic success. This study examines Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) used by undergraduate English students in Indonesia and Pakistan focusing on differences influenced by educational and cultural contexts. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data was collected through a closed-ended questionnaire from 114 students across seven universities. The questionnaire, adapted from Goundar (2019) and based on Gu and Johnson's (1996) framework, categorized VLS into meta cognitive, cognitive, memory, and activation strategies. Data analysis using SPSS included descriptive statistics, normality tests, t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Kruskal-Wallis analysis. The results revealed significant differences in VLS preferences, with cognitive strategies being the most dominant in both groups. However, Pakistani students demonstrated higher meta cognitive strategy use than their Indonesian counterparts. These findings highlight the impact of educational systems on VLS selection. The study suggests incorporating meta cognitive and activation strategies into language learning curricula to enhance students' vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

This study investigated how English as foreign language (EFL) learners in a literary community setting perceived the readability of ChatGPT’s translations in translating an English short story into Indonesian. This research used a short story written by Gerald Murnane entitled The Boy’s Name was David. By using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research explored two questions: the readability score of the translations and learners’ perceptions of this readability. Purposive sampling was employed by involving 18 EFL learners from Kurvadot Creative, a literature discussion community in Cepu, Indonesia. The data were collected through document, questionnaires, and focus group discussions. The readability assessment was analyzed by using Nababan’s Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) framework, while the EFL learners’ perceptions in the discussion was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results revealed that learners generally rated the ChatGPT translations as Readable, with an average score of 2.68. However, the participants also identified several challenges. These included linguistic issues, such as issues with syntax, semantics, and stylistics, as well as reading engagement problems where the participants required more time to read certain parts of the translation. In addition, the untranslated sentences caused by ChatGPT's content policy restrictions added to the challenges. Despite the relatively high readability ratings, these factors disrupted participants' overall reading experiences with the translated short story by ChatGPT.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this investigation is to explore the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English language education, focusing on teachers' perspectives on the positive and negative aspects of implementing AI in EFL classrooms; ways in which AI supports teachers' instructional practices, engages students in learning, and impacts teachers’ own pedagogical practices in addition to the ethical and professional implications of its use.Methodology: This study utilized a descriptive qualitative research methodology. The data were obtained through twelve semi-structured interviews with English language teachers working at one of the private universities in the English department in Indonesia. The participants were intentionally sampled based on their exposure to AI-supported instructional tools. The qualitative data were then analysed thematically to investigate the perceptions teachers had based on recurring themes and categories related to their experiences, challenges, and reflections about AI in education. Results: The findings indicated that AI offers remarkable advantages, including increased teaching efficiency, personalized support for learners, and heightened student motivation. However, the study identified several challenges, including limitations in teacher training, ethical implications related to data collection, technological constraints, and a potential reduction in human interaction. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of AI integration relies not only on teachers but also on administrators, policies, and ethical positions. Applications/Originality/Value: This research sheds light on the human-centered use of AI in language education. Utilizing Humanistic Learning Theory and the TPACK framework, it demonstrates how teachers can uphold empathy, authenticity, and pedagogical balance in the wake of emerging technology. These insights matter for policy design and professional development of eco-sustainable practices for using AI-enhanced instruction.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of code-mixing used in Fani Rahm’s YouTube videos and to classify the factors influencing their use in her content. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze code-mixing in Fani Rahm’s YouTube videos. The research data consists of utterances containing English code-mixing in Indonesian, obtained from three selected videos. Data collection techniques included observation, repeated viewings, and video transcription. The data were then analyzed by classifying code-mixing types according to Hoffman’s (1991) theory and identifying the social factors influencing code-mixing use according to Weinreich’s (1963) theory. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, and its validity was tested through source triangulation. The result of this study is that English–Indonesian code-mixing in Fani Rahm’s YouTube beauty content appears in three forms: intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and pronunciation change. It is influenced by low-frequency words, audience design, and oversight, where English is used for precision, audience adaptation, and habitual exposure. Overall, code-mixing functions as a purposeful strategy to enhance clarity, engagement, and bilingual identity in digital beauty discourse.
