Abstract

Milkfish is a widely cultured species in brackish ponds at Towua Village, Kolaka Regency, South East Sulawesi.  The farming of this species currently uses both organic and inorganic fertilizers in ponds to facilitate algae blooms as natural feed for milkfish.  However, the economic feasibility of those fertilizers in farming practices is unknown.  Therefore, this study aims to determine the feasibility of a milkfish farming using organic and inorganic fertilizers. The research was conducted from December 2019 to January 2020. This research used a case study method in one farm owned by local farmer. Data obtained through interviews, observation and documentation. The data analysis was conducted using the formula of cost, revenue, profit, and R/C ratio. The results showed that the R/C ratio for milkfish farming using organic fertilizers was 1.91 whereas the R /C ratio for inorganic fertilizers was 2.06. This study indicated that milkfish farming using inorganic fertilizers was more feasible than that of organic fertilizers.  Therefore, farmers may use inorganic instead of organic fertilizers in their milkfish farms

Abstract

Production factors such as capital, labor and land area as well as business experience has been identified to affect the industry’s production output, including seaweed cultivation using long line method in coastal areas. However, it is currently unknown whether such production factors affect seaweed culture in brackish pond using spread method or not. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the factors of capital, labor, land area and business experience affect the production of agar producing seaweed (Gracillariaverrucosa) farmed in brackish ponds using spread method. This research was conducted from February to March 2020 in Lakawali Beachi Village, Malili, East Luwu, South Sulawesi. Cluster random sampling method was applied to select 10 farmers from a population of 30 farmers in the study site. Data were collected through direct interviews using structured questionnaires. The data observed were the respondent's identity, age, education level, family dependents, and production inputs used in seaweed cultivation (capital, labor, land area, and business experience). Data were analyzed using multiple non-linear regression in SPSS 16.0 program. The results showed that the factors that had a significant and positive effect on seaweed production in the study site were land area and business experience with a regression coefficient value of 0.871. Whereas other factors such as capital and labor did not have a significant effect withregression coefficient value of 0.023 and -0.014, respectively. Therefore, the development of agar producing seaweed aquacultureshould take land area and business experience into consideration, whereas capital and labor can be ignored.

Abstract

Demand for agar producing seaweed G. verrucosa continues to increase in both domestic and global markets. Currently, the seaweed farmers in Lakawali Pantai Village, Malili District, East Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi Province use the spread and the hanging method for seaweed culture in brackish ponds, but the profit of these method if applied in the same area of pond is unknown. Therefore, this study aims to determine the comparison of profit obtained by seaweed farmers using the spreading and the hanging method in the same area of pond. This research was conducted from February to March 2020. The sample selection in this study used a purposive sampling method where 10 respondents were chosen out of 35 seaweed farmers using the spread method and since only 1 farmer using the hanging method, this farmer was selected as respondent. The rearing time for seaweed in both cultivation methods was 30 days and this was calculated as one production cycle. Data obtained through observation, interviews and documentation and analyzed using the total cost analysis formula consisting of fixed, variable costs, revenues and profits. The t test was used to compare the profits of the two methods of seaweed cultivation. The results showed that the average profit of seaweed cultivation using the spread method was IDR. 3,076,548 / cycle / Ha and the hanging method was 9,046,651 / cycle / Ha. The studyindicated that the hanging method of seaweed cultivation was more profitable than the spreading method, therefore, it was recommended that farmerschange their seaweed culture prcaticeto hanging method in order to increase profits of the seaweed farm.

Abstract

The government has disbursed village funds for the past 5 years, but the outcomes have been inconsistent. This research seeks to understand the impact of these funds on the welfare of beneficiaries, specifically focusing on the income of fishermen in Desa Tiga, Tiworo Utara District, Southeast Sulawesi. Our findings reveal that the highest income among fishermen who received the assistance was Rp6,846,500, while the lowest was Rp2,328,111, with an average income of Rp4,382,908. Based on the welfare indicators set by the Badan Pusat Statistik 2022, the income of fishermen who received gillnet fishing gear through the village fund program in Desa Tiga places them in the prosperous category. This suggests that when village funds are used effectively, they can significantly improve the living standards of rural communities.
