Abstract

Kata Kunci: Pelatihan, Bahasa Inggris, Pariwisata  ABSTRACT The rural tourism sector is increasingly developing as a strategy to enhance the local community's economy. Sawarna Village, located in Lebak Regency, Banten, is known for its natural beach beauty and surfing activities that attract both domestic and international tourists. However, one of the challenges faced is the lack of English language proficiency among the local community, despite this skill being crucial for improving interactions with international tourists. The English Education Study Program of FKIP Universitas Terbuka responds to this need by organizing English for Tourism training as part of its community service activities. This training is designed to enhance the community's ability to communicate with foreign tourists, aligning with the government's vision of making the Bayah Dome Geopark a global destination. Through collaboration with the community and support for sustainable programs, it is hoped that Sawarna Village can achieve independence in using English as a means of communication, enrich knowledge, and open new opportunities for the local community. Keywords: Training, English, Tourism

Abstract

Teaching scientific writing has been compulsory in many Indonesian universities. It is usually the main indicator for completing an undergraduate program. Despite this fact, not only do universities apply similar policies, but training in that particular skill is also an increasingly common trend. The Open University of Indonesia, widely known as Universitas Terbuka, is the biggest and the only university that administers distance learning in the state, to implement this policy. An example is the existence of a scientific writing course, a compulsory course in the English Education Department of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, where the course is taught to all students as a requirement to graduate from the university. This research was established by selecting seven participants who were enrolled in the course. The objective is to assess the appearance of critical thinking and literacy among students who have been trained in the subject. Seven academic papers representing these seven students were analyzed to identify traces of both necessary skills for conducting research: critical thinking and literacy. The qualitative method was chosen to determine whether students write using critical thinking and literacy. After analyzing the data, the researcher concluded positive findings on the use of both skills, although not all students performed well. However, one particular student showed a unique pattern in applying these skills. In terms of critical thinking, the researcher identified three sequences, while pairing techniques were employed in critical literacy to accommodate this skill's presence.

Abstract

Distance learning has been one way to provide accessible education across Indonesia's vast geographical area and dense population. However, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT with its free access, may have disrupted the reciprocal learning process between the tutor as an online lecturer and the students. This research involved 42 active tutors from the English Education Department at Universitas Terbuka (UT), the only open and distance learning university in Indonesia. With more than 650.000 students, the university relies heavily on online tutorials (Tuton), in which student-tutor interaction has been significantly influenced by the presence of ChatGPT. By gathering data through open and closed-ended questionnaires and analyzing it using a mixed-methods approach, the study revealed a contrast in perspectives among tutors, which the researchers refer to as a ‘paradox of perspective’. This condition presents with the fact that the tutors were struggling to identify the AI used, even though they seemed to show they could adjust to the situation. They also questioning the authenticity of students work yet unable to detect the ChatGPT intervention.  The finding might imply an urge for a distance learning institution like UT to address the issue. There are two major recommendations from the tutor by having a guideline for ChatGPT usage by the students and training for the tutor in dealing with the AI disruption.
